If you do not have a large budget and are a large organization, I would steer clear of Actuate. If you are looking to do very complex washboarding, I would not use them. Your developers have to be very skilled to work with this. Plan to bring in consultants if necessary to help your process. Adhoc reporting is weak. If your pricing is user based and you expand, this could be very expensive.

Pros

  • The report outputs can vary across different types such as HTML, PDF, and Excel
  • Their open source offering is very sufficient
  • There are great boards and blogs for developers and engineers to expand and use their features.
  • The people from the company that I've worked with are professional and courteous.

  • Kalido has developed a data security and privacy manual for its personnel that is easy to understand and that provides direct guidance with respect to security requirements, including requirements related to support services to Kalido customers.
  • Flexible master data modeling
  • Kalido clearly establishes in its policy documents that Customer Database Information (CDI) is confidential information that must beprotected, and sets forth specific requirements for handling of CDI including encryption during electronic transmission and storage, as well as other controls.

Cons

  • The report designer can be unstable at times.
  • The reporting engine tends to have memory leaks with certain types of massive-data reporting.
  • The report graphics don't have the sexiest appeal (e.g. Glossy feel, animated output)
  • Some extensibility is extremely difficult to get to without purchasing a license (e.g. Setting a simple flag so that HTML outputs in compressed mode requires either creating your own emitter or going the paid route)

  • Multiple rows, linked by pointers that makes data difficult to read. Could be structured in columns in a table.
  • Kalido indicated in its survey response that it does not formally employ a standard configuration for its workstation builds, and/or it does not periodically review systems for deviations from the standard configuration. The Kalido DSP Manual indicates that Kalido does use a system security agent to maintain patches and anti-malware defense.

I am no longer working for the company that was using Actuate but I believe they would continue to use it because the stitching costs would be to high. It would require a complete rewrite of the reports and the never version of Actuate (BIRT) even required an almost complete report rewrite

Breadth of Deployment

Actuate was used by the indirect procurement team and the maintenance departments company wide across many facilities. Well over 100 concurrent users at anytime. Actuate was used across vast majority of locations with the ERP solution we had at the time.

Alternatives Considered

Actuate has a HUGE number of features that can tie nicely into almost any ERP but it takes some time to learn and the development community was relatively small compared to the Crystal Reports alternative. Crystal was far easier to learn and had a massive support base. Probably because it is now owned by SAP.

Collaboration and Sharing

Having more that one developer working on Actuate reports became quite a problem because once a report was compiled it was published to the server. The published file then could not be decompiled and the design files had to be stored in a particular shared location on the server. Also, I experienced issues leaving code notes in the SQL statements of the reports when I tried to compile them

Data Integration

This was a feature of Actuate I almost forgot. You could connect to number of different data sources across the organization from Oracle to MySQL and just about everything in between. Also if you have multiple environments of the same system (DEV,QA,PROD) you can change the connection string each time you compile the same report to promote changes. This was easier then changing the connections in alternative software like Crystal Reports

Return on Investment

  • Actuate can handle 50 to 60 sub reports inside a report very well.
  • Dynamically creating the datasource, chart, graph, reports are the main advantages. We can do any level of drilling, and can create a performance matrix dashboard efficiently.
