If you do not have a large budget and are a large organization, I would steer clear of Actuate. If you are looking to do very complex washboarding, I would not use them. Your developers have to be very skilled to work with this. Plan to bring in consultants if necessary to help your process. Adhoc reporting is weak. If your pricing is user based and you expand, this could be very expensive.

High volume, high value data is a natural fit for SAP HANA. We use to store supply information, which s a very large dataset and is relevant rolled up to a total amount and when rolled all the way down to individual items used for individual procesures. HANA is probably a suboptimal place to store slowly-changing, seldom used data (although I'd still recommend using Smart Data Access to manage how users interact with that data)

Pros

OpenText Analytics

  • The report outputs can vary across different types such as HTML, PDF, and Excel
  • Their open source offering is very sufficient
  • There are great boards and blogs for developers and engineers to expand and use their features.
  • The people from the company that I've worked with are professional and courteous.

SAP HANA

  • Universal Journal. No reconciliations are required between FI and COPA. This is a big advantage.
  • New asset accounting is more robust and provides options to create multiple ledger groups. Treasury and Cash management are user-friendly now.
  • Performance of base accounting tables is very fast.

Cons

OpenText Analytics

  • Report rendering can take a long time for large reports (250,000+ pages) - we run these in batch over night
  • The deployment of production code from development to test to production enviroments can be complex due to the number of components that must compile

SAP HANA

  • Stability of database is a key aspect we would recommend.
  • In terms of missing functionality, probably the ability to use light front end tool development platforms to build Hana views would be helpful.
  • More demos or example base Hana views would help users to build their custom models easily.

There are some very complex performance reports, which can not be handled in other tools. If we want to create our own framework in any reporting tool then Actuate is the best choice

We looked at a few other competitor's products but based on value for features chose Actuate for its total cost of ownership.

SAP HANA

Best suited for quite a few enterprise apps built on SAP ERP systems. With many products being IT-oriented, it takes forever for businesses to leverage functionality without being dependent on IT. However, compared to the Oracle Database, this is extremely flexible in terms of providing value-added products for business. Definitely recommended among the options available in the market.

Return on Investment

OpenText Analytics

  • Actuate can handle 50 to 60 sub reports inside a report very well.
  • Dynamically creating the datasource, chart, graph, reports are the main advantages. We can do any level of drilling, and can create a performance matrix dashboard efficiently.

SAP HANA

  • Positive: Single source of truth.
  • Positive: Reduced data footprint hence less storage.
  • Negative: Expensive.
