What is the licensing structure? How long does it take to get licenses? Can an OEM reseller of Actuate get one license for the entire development organization?

SAP HANA

High volume, high value data is a natural fit for SAP HANA. We use to store supply information, which s a very large dataset and is relevant rolled up to a total amount and when rolled all the way down to individual items used for individual procesures. HANA is probably a suboptimal place to store slowly-changing, seldom used data (although I'd still recommend using Smart Data Access to manage how users interact with that data)

Cons

  • The debug tool that came with the Actuate 8 developer was poorly written in my opinion; compiling a report could be very difficult when a number of functions were being called.
  • There wasn't any reporting that could be run to download Actuate utilization statistics. Analytics had to be done by manually reviewing who had been running reports.
  • At times when the Actuate Server would become overloaded the only solution was to restart it. There wasn't a way to clear up the list of pending report requests.

Breadth of Deployment

Actuate was used by the indirect procurement team and the maintenance departments company wide across many facilities. Well over 100 concurrent users at anytime. Actuate was used across vast majority of locations with the ERP solution we had at the time.

Alternatives Considered

It is vastly superior to these in many ways, for complex reporting it is a much more sophisticated solution. Visualizations are very good. Javascript extensibility is very powerful, others don't support this or as well. Pentaho and MS are both OLAP oriented. Pentaho is moving more toward big data, which was not our primary focus. Others are stuck in the Crystal Reports Band metaphor.

The in-memory performance is the key factor that got HANA sold to us. They also have a huge enterprise user base with nice sized communities to share a good or bad experience. The SAP is stacked solid and is moving in the right direction.

Collaboration and Sharing

Having more that one developer working on Actuate reports became quite a problem because once a report was compiled it was published to the server. The published file then could not be decompiled and the design files had to be stored in a particular shared location on the server. Also, I experienced issues leaving code notes in the SQL statements of the reports when I tried to compile them

Data Integration

You can include a large variety of data sources, any major rdbms, big data sources, nosql stores. A developer could write a driver for many other systems, though they have wide support. They have support for a number of sources such as salesforce.com, other web based sources can be included using scripting.

Return on Investment

  • Actuate can handle 50 to 60 sub reports inside a report very well.
  • Dynamically creating the datasource, chart, graph, reports are the main advantages. We can do any level of drilling, and can create a performance matrix dashboard efficiently.
