If you do not have a large budget and are a large organization, I would steer clear of Actuate. If you are looking to do very complex washboarding, I would not use them. Your developers have to be very skilled to work with this. Plan to bring in consultants if necessary to help your process. Adhoc reporting is weak. If your pricing is user based and you expand, this could be very expensive.

How much data do you intend to index daily? Indexing and querying large volumes of data requires the right architecture, and determines the ultimate cost of the entire Splunk ecosystem as Splunk makes their money by charging against the amount of data indexing done on a daily basis. What data problems are you trying to analyze? Have you identified who will analyze the data and are you going to train them how to analyze the data? Have a strong understanding of your problem, and your data, will drive who analyzes the data. Don't expect your Splunk administrator/architect to also be your only data analyst.

Pros

  • Easy data import
  • Multiple levels of user security

  • Parsing data without manual intervention is a true time saver. Not to say you can't tweak the parsing, but unlike my experiences with the ELK stack, Splunk's ingestion and parsing is so good you can focus on other priorities.
  • Splunk offers many free technology add-ons that provides real value immediately. For example, the Distributed Management Console (DMC) helps pull all the Splunk Architecture management together in one set of dashboards. To me, this is a true differentiator compared to its competitors.
  • Searching for data nuggets is fast. Even dense datasets returns results surprisingly fast.
  • Splunk works well with external data sources too. DBConnect is a feature that allows Splunk to interact with an existing data warehouse. So there's no need to move legacy data into Splunk indices since you can just use a SQL-like (dbquery) command to pull the data in for analysis.

Cons

  • Licensing is a bear.

  • The tool needs to integrate AI to understand the system logs and alerting should be based on the auto learning.

You can literally throw in a single word into Splunk and it will pull back all instances of that word across all of your logs for the time span you select (provided you have permission to see that data). We have several users who have taken a few of the free courses from Splunk that are able to pull data out of it everyday with little help at all.

Breadth of Deployment

Actuate is used in 3-4 product lines. We have about 30 developers company wide that develop reports and perhaps 100 testers and business analysts that use it. Then we resell it with our product which is used by thousands of end users.

Alternatives Considered

I've used JReports and Actuate is very similar but seems to have a lot more customization features for the end user of BIRT reports.

Many products like open source ELK stack tools were evaluated. Splunk stacks up against them well due to its more enterprise-related features. Though the learning curve is a little steeper, according to many, the benefits far outweigh any potential negatives. The ease and small amount of time in which it can be deployed, add some real dollar value.

As a developer, the report code itself cannot be diffed and the merged from one version of a report to another. If you have 2 developers working on the same report, the last developer's changes have to be manually implemented into the first developer's version of the report. You cannot use a tool such as WinMerge to merge differences from one report design into another. Or rather, you could but there's no guaruntee that it would work. This is a real bottleneck. You have to implement changes in the design tool

Return on Investment

  • Actuate can handle 50 to 60 sub reports inside a report very well.
  • Dynamically creating the datasource, chart, graph, reports are the main advantages. We can do any level of drilling, and can create a performance matrix dashboard efficiently.

  • The impact was tremendous in terms of dollar values. The real-time alerts generated helped salvage many business transactions which would have been a nightmare to deal with later.
  • Legacy reporting systems were decommissioned and reporting moved to Splunk which helped in saving maintenance costs.
  • The upfront expenditure is Splunk but whether that can be considered negative depends on the organization.
