If you do not have a large budget and are a large organization, I would steer clear of Actuate. If you are looking to do very complex washboarding, I would not use them. Your developers have to be very skilled to work with this. Plan to bring in consultants if necessary to help your process. Adhoc reporting is weak. If your pricing is user based and you expand, this could be very expensive.

Well suited for quick reporting but lacks some of the complexity that Tableau has.

Pros

  • In terms of extensibility this is the best reporting platform we have seen. You can build very sophisticated reports with different data sources, and extend the basic functionality with javscript code
  • Securing the BI system is also a strength and the system can be configured relatively easily.
  • Reports can be available on mobile devices
  • Good Javascript embedding framework does not require the site to be built in java

  • The easy to use UI allowed our teams to get on-boarded to the platform very quickly and let our least BI friendly teams customize reports to their liking.
  • The flexibility of the platform allowed us to reach all levels of our team
  • Quick onboarding process allowed us to move from inception to implementation in a matter of weeks

Cons

  • We have found a ton of bugs in there, our implementation is very complex and we use a lot of features, but we wish there were less bugs. Particularly with parameter display and validation.
  • Actuate has decided not to continue to support the birtondemand platform and it is running on older versions of their main platform.
  • Building out security extensibility is rather complex.
  • They have not had a rest interface until new versions of iHub.

  • On the backend data mapping can get very messy and needs to be constantly monitored
  • Importing an Excel or CSV file is not nearly as simple as it should be
  • More flexible graph options

Pricing for BIRT onDemand is going up 10x and sales can't negotiate. They are not supporting this platform. For us, a smaller company using iHub is going to be too expensive. We can't continue to use this solution.

I think there are a lot of opportunities for ThoughtSpot, as its story is up and coming and growing. ThoughtSpot is a great tool that can be able to be disruptive in self-service analytics.

Breadth of Deployment

Adopted by infrastructure, ad-operations, sales, business, and account support. We are a small company and maintain a small number of accounts on this system. If pricing would be acceptable, we would roll this out to all of our customers.

Alternatives Considered

We looked at a few other competitor's products but based on value for features chose Actuate for its total cost of ownership.

ThoughtSpot is just as good at creating the initial graphic for the end user, it might even be better because the user really does not need much technical knowledge in order to create a basic graphic. Currently, ThoughtSpot cannot yet compete with the other tools when it comes to designing a fully interactive dashboard or with customization of graphics.

LDAP and Active Directory can be integrated. Access control can be extended with web services but it can be complicated. Different types of users can have different permissions and reports can be hidden from some users. Reports can be exported in a lot of formats including microsoft formats, and pdf. Interactive viewer is very powerful.

ThoughtSpot has a fairly simple access control system. Access to data can be controlled by filtering access by roles assigned to each user. Access control can be applied to both data as well as actions. Data sharing and reports sharing are also pretty straightforward - you can create distribution groups for scheduling automated reports

While thoughtspot supports basic ODBC drivers it is highly complex to move data to the thoughtspot box for any kind of analysis since thoughtspot does not run on your RDBMS system. To get thoughspot to do what it is good at a lot of investment needs to go into data modeling to deliver the right data model that makes analysis easy.

Return on Investment

  • Actuate can handle 50 to 60 sub reports inside a report very well.
  • Dynamically creating the datasource, chart, graph, reports are the main advantages. We can do any level of drilling, and can create a performance matrix dashboard efficiently.

  • Not a substitute for other software yet
  • Allowed easy and fast decision making
