If you do not have a large budget and are a large organization, I would steer clear of Actuate. If you are looking to do very complex washboarding, I would not use them. Your developers have to be very skilled to work with this. Plan to bring in consultants if necessary to help your process. Adhoc reporting is weak. If your pricing is user based and you expand, this could be very expensive.

Toad Data Point

I have not worked with another tool that covers so many different data stores so easily. I find the Query Builder and the data scrubbing abilities just top-notch and something the analyst needs. Toad Data Point is very good at working with Excel...can output directly to Excel, to a page in an existing spreadsheet (ie: refresh the data), to pivot tables, and can even set up Excel with the SQL behind the scenes so all you have to do is refresh the spreadsheet and Excel will pull the data! If your analysts use the SQL language, Toad Data Point has an extensive SQL editor, customized to the database environment the focus is pointing to...that includes templates, code snippets, SQL history, and more. This editor comes from the very popular Toad database access/development tool with a rich history in the IT world.

Pros

  • In terms of extensibility this is the best reporting platform we have seen. You can build very sophisticated reports with different data sources, and extend the basic functionality with javscript code
  • Securing the BI system is also a strength and the system can be configured relatively easily.
  • Reports can be available on mobile devices
  • Good Javascript embedding framework does not require the site to be built in java

  • Accesses and extracts data from 20 or more different data stores.
  • Can include data selection even from data stored in Excel spreadsheets.
  • Can automate a flow of tasks (some call it workflows) to provide an easy and automated solution, freeing the analyst from these types of data processing.
  • Analysts don't need to know the SQL query language at all. Toad Data Point has a comprehensive Query Builder that allows for the selection from a large variety of data stores to be included in a single output data request.
  • The data cleansing ability is top-notch. The analyst can 'fix' data at the data extract time. Of course, filtering (data selection) is an integral part of Toad Data Point...in both locating data to include as well as the data from each data store being included.

Cons

  • We have found a ton of bugs in there, our implementation is very complex and we use a lot of features, but we wish there were less bugs. Particularly with parameter display and validation.
  • Actuate has decided not to continue to support the birtondemand platform and it is running on older versions of their main platform.
  • Building out security extensibility is rather complex.
  • They have not had a rest interface until new versions of iHub.

  • I find the explain plans that can be generating difficult to use, and should provide better suggestions as to how to improve performance

Difficulty with some extensibility that should be fairly easy, lack of shading in the reports (even simple phong shading), lack of out-of-the box capabilities that seem like no brainers and instability with the design tools all drop the product a few marks, but the support community and the overall product experience is well above average. It's at least worth a try and its extensibility makes it a good contender

Breadth of Deployment

The design tool is useful for basic reporting, but many reports require some experience in SQL and JavaScript. Java programming, though not a required skill for basic reports, is needed for better reporting and to access the more advanced features (such as debugging).

Alternatives Considered

Actuate has been in the industry a while and the open source community make going with Actuate's BIRT a stable decision. Changing report engines can be expensive, so going with a company with a good reputation helps long-term

I like Toad Data Point being more designed to work with non Oracle databases

As a developer, the report code itself cannot be diffed and the merged from one version of a report to another. If you have 2 developers working on the same report, the last developer's changes have to be manually implemented into the first developer's version of the report. You cannot use a tool such as WinMerge to merge differences from one report design into another. Or rather, you could but there's no guaruntee that it would work. This is a real bottleneck. You have to implement changes in the design tool

Toad Data Point coupled with Toad Intelligence Central allows for the sharing of anything produced, as well as automating work flows/series of tasks, across users. These users can be given just read or update abilities to the produced output. Also, Intelligence Central works with Active Directories so those users and associated permissions are both utilized and enforced. The data and reports are as secure as your existing systems.

I do not have any real complaints about this product. It does a great job of quickly joining datasets and giving the ability to add new data sets from totally different sources quickly. We previously had a lot of trouble joining to Sharepoint lists and Google analytics. Once we have the data its been very useful to be able to use transformations to easily update data and cleanse it after all the data is all joined together.

Return on Investment

  • Actuate can handle 50 to 60 sub reports inside a report very well.
  • Dynamically creating the datasource, chart, graph, reports are the main advantages. We can do any level of drilling, and can create a performance matrix dashboard efficiently.
