Fairly easy and intuitive user interface with common features throughout the platform makes it easy to train users new to the system. However, it requires a lot of dev customization with limited features that a power user/administrator can manipulate. Doesn't provide a very customized experience to the individual user. Seems that the best scenario is for companies that will use implementation and customization services to maximize the features of Acumatica.

Epicor ERP

Epicor is an excellent system for most manufacturing customers and offers several features previously only offered on the very large (e.g. Oracle, PeopleSoft, etc) level platforms. Yet the pricing is mid-level, and the expandability through additional modules provides a great opportunity for future business growth. The architecture is easily scalable, fast, and offers great options for both on premise and hosted systems. Epicor is flexible, and large enough that regular updates and enhancements continue to be adopted to improve functionality and effectiveness.It is however, not for everyone. Competition in this sector is very good, with several mid-level systems being available at a similar price point. If you are considering adopting a new ERP system and are in the plastics space, you also owe it to yourself and your team to consider IQMS, which is becoming a de-facto standard in this segment. Also, for specific medical sectors, you will find that Epicor software validation for CFR Part 11 compliance can be quite costly-- although the software is capable of supporting this with modification.Overall, Epicor is a solid choice. Ultimately, it will be up to your team to determine what works best for your needs. You won't be disappointed with Epicor if you do the due diligence and take the time needed to properly review and demo the product. Remember though, demos are typically "best case" staged, so be sure to throw several curveballs at your vendor and bring out the unique requirements of your business.

  • Expense reporting: Available both on the desktop and app versions, it has allowed our team members to reduce almost all paper in the expense reporting process, streamline approvals, and reduced time from submission to final payment.
  • CRM: Managing customer information in a single place, accessible to all. Connecting customer accounts to opportunities allow us to quickly see the overall value of an account from past, current and future opportunities.
  • Financial: Drill downs in reporting allows quick and easy access to address questions on individual transactions affecting financial performance. Drill downs are also protected by permissions and roles to ensure people only have access to information relevant to them.

  • Epicor's user interface is easily customizable so that users can focus their main access screen to support just those functions that are relevant to their work day; helping to avoid menu clutter and confusion.
  • Epicor advanced scheduling provides true drag and drop customizable dashboard with real-time updates to allow users to easily track jobs on the shop floor in an easy to understand Gantt-style (MS Project style) graphical interface.
  • Epicor's customizable dashboards are also updateable, adding the ability for real-time collaboration and updates. From nearly every key field in Epicor, even on dashboards, the ability to drill down to source data is one "right click" away.
  • Epicor reporting uses standard Microsoft SQL SSRS instead of 3rd party add-ins such as Crystal Reports. This improves speed significantly during report generation, and ensures a common platform for upgrades without concerns about rewriting reports to incompatible versions.
  • Epicor has a "Google-like" search feature (Enterprise Search) that is top notch. It literally allows you to search on any key word in your data set and brings back relevant results in various groupings to make it simple to quickly get to the data you need. This is the favorite feature of new users.

Cons

  • Email integration: Horribly clunky, requires users to share email password with Acumatica to allow use of outbound emails. Should be using a more secure method like access tokens.
  • Expense approval process: Once expense claims are approved, approvers (depending on role) can no longer see the approved/denied claims. Denial of claims requires a manual email/call to submitter instructing them to correct and resubmit the claim.
  • CRM: Allow for tracking of cases by the opportunity in addition to business accounts. This would allow for more accurate tracking of issues related to specific opportunities.

  • Lack of detail in reports. Some reports don't show all the detail that is needed.
  • The time it takes to get support. They take a couple of days to respond to issues the are a high priority
  • List views having too useless information in the default view. Some of the list views in some modules have a lot of useless information, but don't include some of the more useful information. This is just for our company though could be different for others.

It is very customisable and good value for money. It is also scalable for the future. The CRM and ecommerce integtration are the main downsides.

If the answer to your problem is not readily available in an answer book, your response or solution will take months, if you get one at all. Problems need to be sent to support and duplicated by them before they try to fix it. This is extremely frustrating because you have to prove to Epicor that you are having an issue. If by some miracle you get by this barrier, your problem is submitted to development for review. You can't speak to them or communicate in any way directly. This group appears to be completely unconcerned about user issues or customer service. Our experiences have been negative across the board.

Alternatives Considered

I liked the flexibility of Salesforce and the ability to customize look and feel with minimal development involvement. Email integration was smooth and seamless. However, Acumatica's ability to customize certain business processes to meet our particular day to day operational needs and account based fee as opposed to user based fees made it a better option for our organization.

We looked at a ton of other systems, but we picked Epicor because it had the most functionality that we wanted out of the box, and with the ability to customize everything. Some other packages had even better customization but less out of the box functionality. Epicor had a good mix of the two.

Return on Investment

  • Better communication and collaboration on customer accounts through the CRM.
  • Improved month-end close time and more up to date financial information.
  • Slow to implement has been frustrating for the team and has been more expensive than anticipated.

  • ROI not quantifiable for the system but clearly the complexity of the jobs and accurate job costing would not be possible without an integrated manufacturing system and Epicor ERP is the most capable of being customizable for the unique environment.
  • Every employee is a "buyer" and has the ability to purchase whatever is needed for the project they are working on or their job function. In an extremely flat organizational structure (three levels for 700+ self-managed employees) anything that avoids barriers to productivity is a huge plus.
  • Massive customizations in previous versions has made upgrading to ERP 10 a lengthy process but built-in customization tools will make this easier going beyond ERP 10.
  • The system was implemented prior to the Projects module so everything is crammed into a job structure. Switching to Projects (made of jobs) will be a huge organizational streamlining.
