As I have only used it in one business I can't say too much how relevant it would be for other types of business, eg Retail or Manufacturing. It doesn't appear to be specifically set up for ecommerce.

We wholesale products and it works well for that kind of business model.

Workfront

I work on a team where each of us is separated individually from the United States. Workfront enables us to collectively collaborate on a common project setting individual goals. Project managers can invite users, send out updates and set goals to be marked as complete by individual users. Definitely an AAA+ option for global team project collaborations. Smaller projects with fewer working participants would most likely not benefit from the ROI for this product, however, if these smaller tasks are building to a larger project or your teams have multiple small projects running simultaneously then Workfront is for you as well.

Pros

  • Generic Inquiries are a very easy way to create custom reports.
  • The automation schedules are useful, we use these for confirming of shipments, creating invoices and emailing them. Reduces workload.
  • Open for integration with other software. We find the ease of connection to MS PowerBI very useful.

  • Reporting Feature: I inherited Workfront from the previous project manager. It had only been used for 3 months up until this point. By that time, our set up hours were depleted, and I was up to my own devices to determine how to build and customize reports to get what I needed. Unfortunately, the former PM wasn't very experienced with reports and dashboards, so the reports that existed were broken or inadequate. This means, I had to fumble through the reports. I am not getting what I need from the reporting functionality, and the help / training sessions are very underwhelming.
  • Updating tasks: I appreciate the template feature, but to update the tasks when you have more than 15 is cumbersome. Each cell is responsive, and I would very much welcome a spreadsheet type page where I can enter everything and press "Save" before changes commit to the system.
  • Assigning tasks to a user where the date is already set: For example, I use a template, and one of tasks is graphic design, and the date was pre-populated to 10/31/2017. When I assign this task to the user (e.g. Bob Smith), the task automatically enters into their "My Work" as 10/31/2017, which is great. But, let's say I after I assign the task, I update the predecessor to take longer, which makes this task's due date 11/15/2017. This makes Bob's task still due on 10/31/2017. What a headache!!!

I gave a rating of 10 on overall usability because Workfront is cloud based and very easy to use. Workfront also provides collaboration on projects which is critical to a projects success. The tool gives everyone high level visibility in their projects down to the smallest detail. Wonderful project management system, allows you to cut down on emails, meetings and no more spreadsheets for tracking your projects.

It would be nice if the support forms were more dynamic so you could add more information to the support ticket when you enter it to reduce back and forth with the support team member. Also communication on escalated tickets isn't always great. It's gotten better over the years but still needs improvement. Other than that, initial response on support tickets is really quick and the people I've dealt with have always been very professional.

The training is very easy to use and you can simply choose the topics included in the course(s) that are most important to your training needs. After each training course, you are tested on what you have learned. If you need a refresher course, they provide Course Catalogs as well as instructor-led courses & workshops.

I would recommend all user's using Workfront to go through the training material provided. Have all user's practice in the Sandbox environment and have your workflow documented for the consultant before he arrives on site.

Alternatives Considered

NetSuite is much more expensive and is difficult to customise or integrate.
SAP is a more complex and powerful system, but several times more expensive to implement and run.

I wasn't with this company when the buying decision was made. However, Workfront replaced Mavenlink, and what I could gather is Mavenlink was liked by users, but the owners and administrators wanted more reporting and more automation.For me, Workfront is far superior to MS Planner. Planner would make my life 10x more difficult than using sticky notes because there was no automation, no budgeting, no scheduling, and it was Kanban, where we are 50%/50% agile and waterfall.Our account manager feels that Smartsheet is superior to Workfront, because the reporting and Gantts are significantly better. However, she is not experienced with workflows, task management, or automation.MS Project is worse that Workfront, in that Workfront has a better UI for all users in the company. We are able to easily tell where we are in the process, and attach documents (including versioning) to tasks/the project, which is useful for a creative agency.Trello is a Kanban tool, and lends itself to an agile shop, which we are not.

We have been using Workfront for about 3 years. During this time they continue to be a very stable project management system. Workfront's overall scalability is able to handle increased loads of work. When using Workfront for a project management tool for the web team, we store documents, images & video's without any issues. They work with their customer's to provide the best project management system in the market today! I highly recommend Workfront for all project management needs. Workfront strives to deliver unique technology solutions to growing companies!

  • Workfront gave a HUGE ROI to our implementation team; the team that manages over 6000 projects between 10 people.
  • Without workfront (and with other tools we tried, like Wrike) we struggled with being able to manage these projects on the macro-level. We may have been able to do the work on an individual project, but we didn't have the ability to see how our team was doing as a whole, and we couldn't easily figure out which technicians had the bandwidth for more projects. Workfront made all of this possible for us.
