It is suited well for ad-hoc and scheduled application vulnerability scans. You must review the results to manually filter out false-positives. You must always keep in mind that this is only a vulnerability scan. It can only find a certain class of vulnerabilities, and it can only do that so well. You should definitely not rely on this tool alone for identifying problems. That being said, I have used it along with every other major commercial vulnerability scanner and find it to the best overall ROI compared to more expensive commercial scanners that don't necessarily give you a better user experience or better vulnerability results. I rarely need support from the vendor, but when I do, they have been responsive and able to solve the issue quickly.

McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator

What I like the most is the fact that McAfee tries many different approaches to hit its target, securing the customers. Its feature-rich reporting, dashboarding, and deployment tools are very useful. The engine is just smarter and the processor performance is very much improved. Summary Centralized control of agents to prevent local users from overriding settings is very beneficial.

Pros

Acunetix

  • Fast.
  • Easy-to-use.
  • Great customer support.
  • Reporting features.
  • Supports importing state files from other popular application testing tools.

McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator

  • Static malware scans for known bad processes and files works well and can be schedules on endpoints easily
  • Preventing users from accessing USB drives and other peripherals is easily configured. We can also allow users to access to USB drives with user codes for the times they need it for business reasons.
  • ePO provides access into our MSME software so that we're not managing many different products from different locations.
  • In recent years the console has gotten much easier to navigate even though there is a ton of information to be accessed.

Cons

Acunetix

  • Does not support multiple endpoints well (e.g. apps and services that do not reside at the same URL).
  • Has authentication problems with modern enterprise apps which involve a lot of redirects to unrelated endpoints, federated IDs, SSO, etc. This is related to the first point.
  • The vulnerability detection capability is not as robust as Burp Suite Pro + extensions, Metasploit + auxiliary modules, Nmap + scripts, etc.

McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator

  • Due to Microsoft Windows Updates, support and KB articles are a must.
  • Deployment tasks might need a lot of configurations before.
  • ePO upgrade requires a lot of preparation steps.

Overall, McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator server is a great product that we have been using for years. Support for McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator can sometimes be confusing. We first have to determine whether the issue is actually the server, or if it is an issue with the product being managed.

Every year, we re-evaluate the tools we are using and licensing. We balance the ever-changing vendor licensing-models, costs, tool features/usability, etc. For the last few years, this has been the best overall commercial tool for our specific use case. However, this is only one of many tools that we use and need.

We selected McAfee EPO partly because we were already using McAfee VSE, but mostly because there are very few other AV management packages out there that offer the same level of enterprise management tools. That's where it really shines - deployment and management of AV in a large organization of Windows servers and workstations.

Return on Investment

Acunetix

  • Saved money compared to other commercial scanners, especially over the long run.
  • Scan speed seems to be pretty good compared to some of the bulkier commercial products out there. However, that largely has to do with proper configuration.
  • A downside is that is requires a bit of extra work just to get it set up to scan APIs, web services, etc.

McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator

  • Allows us to control threats which can mean less wide-spread virus issues
  • Allowed the service desk to make sure a computer is safe and up to date before adding it back to the domain. This saves the onsite team time because we can check on this remotely.
  • Using this product allows us to better manage all of the machines on and off the network.
