It is very helpful for budgeting and reporting. I love how easy it is to automate reports and presentations. It can be more difficult to plan specific activities. It feels more high-level than activity-level. It shows totals rather than individual transactions (either past or future transactions).

I highly recommend you run away screaming from any suggestion that you put this garbage into your company. It will cost you millions in lost employee productivity and demoralize your best employees.

Pros

  • Allows assumptions to be created for fringes, taxes, capital etc. We are now able to push these type of expenses to individual departments as opposed to a single department. Gives us true costs for each department.
  • The flexibility in revising and creating new sheets allows our organization to modify our budget/forecast approach without much downtime. Also, we can make these modifications internally . No need to hire consultants to complete these tasks.
  • Adaptive Insights is an easy to use/understand tool for end-users. Our users typically struggle with new systems but the Adaptive roll-out was very smooth with very little end-user angst.

  • Concur offers the flexibility to modify and adapt your company settings to address different scenarios such as updated processes, policy changes, group configurations, adding and removing features, limiting or adding restrictions etc. This allows the company to grow and evolve and Concur Travel and Expense seems to grow alongside with the company.
  • Concur streamlines travel and expense and the two modules communicate concurrently with each other. There a features and benefits to this process such as mobile app integration, receipt and travel itinerary management which reduces expense report creation time for the employees. Also, on the administration side it reduces the approval, reimbursement, and expense report reconciliation time frame all while removing human error.
  • Concur stores and organizes hundreds or thousands of documents of information and organizes it in such a way that is easy to bill clients, produce documents for audits or run metrics on the relative health in the organization.

Cons

  • When we purchased the software, there was no template model for SaaS companies. Given Adaptive itself is a SaaS company, we had hoped that we would receive a template that would have saved us some time upfront in building our models. And we probably would have to build some out differently. But I understand this may be an option for new customers.
  • Some basic functionality like YTD calculations are not built into the formula functionality. You have to manually build this into the formula yourself. But it is an easy fix. It just would be nice to have that, as most companies would be interested in a YTD calc.
  • Being able to format reports/dashboards a bit better with +/- variance differentiators

  • While Travel Request is a good idea and Concur mobile is fantastic, the two are not working together yet. If your company requires the use of Request, it cannot be generated when booking travel in the Concur app, therefore our employees have actually had to step backwards since we implemented Request. They can no longer book airfare from the app, only from the website as that's where a Request is generated from.
  • Sales to Implementation has some major room of improvement. Unfortunately you often don't know what you truly need until you're into implementation and by then it's too late as you've already signed a contract. So be as specific as possible when asking questions, even if you think it's something minor...it may turn into something major that costs extra.

There is nothing else out there that even comes close. I think of what the perfect solution is for planning, consolidations, reporting and analysis and Adaptive is already there. Nobody else is even in the same ball park. The support staff is the greatest. They respond very rapidly with the same level of concern that we as customers show

Since we are only just branching out into rolling Concur out globally we will continue our partnership with Concur for a few years at the least so we can have a true view of what all they can do for us.

Usability

My rating of 9 is really a composite of two ratings. For the users, I would give it a 10. But for administrators, I would give it more of an 8. That is because there is definitely a learning curve for the admins. It has a fair level of complexity (which is necessary), especially in the formulas and certain types of sheets. It is a product worth mastering, but it does take time to learn.

ITs not ERP software. It's T/E software. I believe that the thing to point out here is this: The software is supposed to be simple and easy. The software is going to be used by every person in the company. It has to be easy for adoption to remain high. Concur does this. I think that the competitors do this as well but with out all of the functionality that Concur offers

It's live (you can ask questions), it's free, it's good. What's not to like. Only reason it's not getting a "10" is breadth and depth, more would be better.

Implementation

Adaptive Insights8.2
Based on 13 answers
In our experience the Adaptive Suite is quick and easy to deploy. Most implementations are facilitated in just a few weeks but may range depending on organisation complexity from say 2 to 12 weeks with only the very largest and most complex taking a little longer. When key stakeholders are properly engaged and the opportunities for skills transfer are exercised, we find that implementations proceed well and are delivered on time and to project budget

Our main problem was integration with NetSuite, which when we implemented was new to Concur. From what I understand (this was before I joined the company), it didn't go very well, classic case of sales promising something the software or organization couldn't deliver. Otherwise, the implementation seems to have been fine.

Breadth of Deployment

It is used throughout the company in different divisions and at our corporate level. When used in a division recently the personnel from different departments directly inputted data and monitored their budget against actual. It is very user friendly and flexible.

Alternatives Considered

I have used Hyperion and TM1 solutions in the past.
Hyperion was expensive and difficult to implement, requires more technical knowledge to set up the business rules for more more hands on IT support.
TM1 was a great tool for FP&A users. However TM1 lacked a report writer and was not a cloud based solution so access for international offices and those who traveled frequently had challenges. Adaptive offers a well-rounded solution cost effective solution with easy access, user friendly interface, built in report writer and dashboard capabilities.

During the comparison I looked at Expesnsify, SAP's T/E module and a few others. There is simply no match for Concur. I would say that many other products can rival Concur in the expense area but the two particular areas to be aware of are 1) Travel (compliance and prices) 2) Work Flow (rules engine and approval process) 3) Reporting (Concur uses a Cognos based engine that will do just about anything users could need that was not being sent to an EDW (enterprise data Warehouse) for reporting. Executive Summary: Individually one package may rival Concur in one area or another. Collectively I don't a package that has the same abilities

Return on Investment

  • Cycle time for processing financial statements, budgets, and forecasts are greatly reduced.
  • Visibility of company metrics and drivers has been increased across the company.
  • The ease and ability to quickly create multiple forecasts using different scenarios is now available.
Jack Kersjes profile photo
  • Increasing ROI... I mean I'm sure everyone is happy getting refunded their money when they spend company funds.
  • I would say that every company should invest in Concur, specifically because it's an easy way for finance to approve or disapprove certain expenses.
  • Concur doesn't have any type of influence on our business objective other than making sure we are budgeting for the company correctly. Since being purchased by a PE firm, it was helpful for our company to see where our funds were going and concur helped in doing that.
