Looker

Looker is excellent when there is a large team and when there is a lot of data required to be integrated. It does an excellent job in visualizations and creating charts. It is less appropriate for smaller teams as it is very expensive. If visualizations require too many customizations then Looker is slightly less appropriate. Overall, it provides great visualizations and drill-down analysis. Visualizations can be improved based on the current technology in the market.

Pros

  • Discovery - monitoring KPIs. The new Discovery interface is the easiest dashboard I've ever used. I can have a new report on a Dashboard in under a minute.
  • Reporting - the click and drag graphical user interface makes it easy to design reports to answer almost any financial question. It also makes it easy to adapt a single report for 100 different users.
  • Planning - having multiple versions and multiple levels allows us to compare, contrast, monitor and manage with ease.

  • Automation of reports.
  • Easy drag and drop interface for most functionalities.
  • Great variety of reporting options.
  • Works well with large data in terms of performance.

Cons

  • The Adaptive Planning portion of the suite is very mature and has few short-comings. The biggest improvement I can think of is the ability for formulas to cross versions.
  • The Adaptive Discovery (dashboard) portion of the suite is much less mature. There are many chart types not available that are in Excel. For example, I would like to have an X-Y scatter chart to use. Also, some of the dial (chart) types have very little formatting options (like pie charts).
  • While the object of the web-based product is to eliminate paper printing, there are times when it is necessary to print financial statements. It would be nice to print directly to pdf with the ability to format the reports.
Jack Kersjes profile photo
  • Setting up looker is quite tedious.
  • It takes a considerable amount of time to get handy with the features on Looker .
  • Need to configure database separately every time you want to connect a new database.

Likelihood to Renew

Adaptive Insights8.6

We just recently renewed our contract and I wouldn't hesitate to renew again. First, Adaptive as a company has a great customer-first attitude and they're great to work with. Their customer service team is fantastic. Second, they are constantly trying to improve the product and make it better, but not losing sight of what we really need. Also, the longer you use the product the more it is filled with priceless data all in one spot with instant access to report on and dig into.

We've been very happy with Looker so far, and all teams in the organization are starting to see its value, and use it on a frequent basis. It has quickly become our accessible "source of truth" for all data/metrics.

Usability

Adaptive Insights7.7
Based on 75 answers
Adaptive Planning is intuitive and it's easy to train our users since the database looks a lot like an excel spreadsheet. I've been an Admin for five years and it's easy to maintain the system (setting up users, adding new accounts/cost centers, adding new mappings, controlling access, etc.). The consultants at Adaptive Suite are very accessible and we've engaged them on numerous occasions. For instance, we used consultants to assist with implementing structural changes to our organization (we added legal entities) and with modeling corporate allocations when new allocation functionality became available.

Implementation

Adaptive Insights8.2
Based on 13 answers
Although having a set of spreadsheet and workbooks helps to define the logic and processes, preparing a requirements document is also an important element in a successful implementation. In addition, dedicating a knowledgeable user as part of the "Scrum" development allows focus and permits the implementation to proceed without time loss and promotes knowledge transfer. Finally, having an onsite developer speeds the process and can reduce the overall cost as well.

Breadth of Deployment

It is used throughout the company in different divisions and at our corporate level. When used in a division recently the personnel from different departments directly inputted data and monitored their budget against actual. It is very user friendly and flexible.

Looker has been adopted company-wide, and Looker dashboards are displayed on screens throughout the office. It is the single source of truth, and as the company grows, so will the number of Looker users.

Alternatives Considered

We did not go through a full-blown software selection process, nor have I used other products in the past. Previous to Adaptive, we used Management Reporter (formerly FRx, now part of Microsoft Dynamics GP) for our financial statements, and Excel for our budgeting. Adaptive is far superior to either of those. We pursued Adaptive mainly through word of mouth. When discussing the availability of products with other accounting professionals, it was clear Adaptive was becoming the industry leader for our company size. We had a demo of the product presented by them. Since we liked it so much, we decided to go with them even though we had not reviewed other products.

This question is very complex and depends on the concrete business needs. Looker plays very well when focus is on data discovery, ease-to-use and complex data modeling done straight in the tool. For a super complex dashboard, reports and in a huge enterprise environment with extreme dependencies, there are tools that are currently better suited. One of Looker's strength is to truly enable self-service BI, by giving almost everybody access to the system in a browser environment without the need of a thick client software and for a relatively low marginal price per user.

Ease of sharing is great. I love that any report that has been built can be shared via URL, regardless of whether that report is itself saved to any particular collaboration space or dashboard. Even and ad hoc data pull can be shared with a link

Looker is easy to connect to a data source (SQL DB), allows all SQL functionality and provides additional functionality through their LookML language. Looker run queries in real-time but also allows for scheduling queries so that performance can be optimized. Looker allows you to use multiple data sources and models and allows for flexibility in permissioning users and access.

Return on Investment

  • Adaptive has definitely cut the length of our budget process/season. What used to take us 5-6 months is now down to 3 and during that time the process is much simpler and less frustrating.
  • Financially the product is far more affordable than many other solutions. We saved thousands a year by ditching our old solution and implementing Adaptive.
  • No I/T involvement is also important to note. This allows us to get started, make changes, generate reports, create new metrics when the business needs them, not when I/T can get around to it.
