It is much better to prospect brands and find appropriate contacts at a parent account, and not such a strong suit for agencies.

PitchBook

PitchBook is well suited for any group/firm interested in private equity, particularly those looking to market private placements as well as track overall levels of activity in the private capital markets. It appears they've since added further functionality around private-equity specific interests such as limited partners, fund performance, etc. PitchBook is less useful for tracking standard market data such as pricing publicly-traded securities or tracking M&A transactions, as more robust alternatives exist.

  • Provides email addresses - essential when doing cold email outreach.
  • Provides agencies for each brand/company.
  • Provides media spend for parent company and brand.

  • Voluminous and detailed datasets: PitchBook was a consistently reliable source of information on the most recent private capital markets transactions, as well as the key investors participating in said transactions.
  • Ease of use: PitchBook allowed for easy exporting of screens in Excel for use in our own analyses with minimal friction, and a robust interface ensured a sufficient level of granularity for conducting research.
  • Customer support: PitchBook customer support was extremely helpful and was frequently able to provide answers to any questions that arose.

  • Missing functionality: At times the ability to drill down further by transaction type and/or security was not available, and necessitated further data manipulation in Excel to arrive at the desired result.

Alternatives Considered

Winmo allows more dynamic and functional searches, and puts agency and brand contacts in one place. It also allows exports based on spend and in general, is much more dynamic of a software.

PitchBook is more focused on private company statistics such as capital raised, industry focus, investor base analysis, and overall market activity. PitchBook has more robust capabilities in terms of allowing users to manipulate private markets data, but does not have the same level of public markets reporting functionality, and its Excel plugin is a bit limited in scope. Ultimately we chose PitchBook because it is a highly complementary data source to more established public data providers.
