As for technology and implementation... I think they are superb. But in today's world you can't go around doing whatever you want to stroke your own ego. You have to care for your clients & communicate with them. AdMob loses all respect there. I understand banning those illegal click farm guys in Asia/Africa, but banning a developer in Europe who has nothing to do with click farms, and then refraining to verify their own data collection is absolutely nauseating.

Criteo Dynamic Retargeting

Honestly, based on my experience, I would not recommend Criteo as the first retargeting partner to test out on a client campaign. I have had much more success using AdRoll, and that platform is also much more intuitive and requires less daily maintenance with the campaigns.That being said, Criteo does exactly what it is supposed to. It retargets to users across the web who have been cookied on your website. It also does it so much more efficiently than Google Display Network, so I will give it credit for that.

Cons

  • Theyre customer service is by far the worst ever.
  • They have to stop banning user accounts for no reason. They have been wrong on so many counts, it just will make you wonder which primary school student is giving them info to make such horrendous decisions.
  • Their high handedness is handling cases, they keep giving copy paste client servicing replies, won't own up to it being their fault, and leave you in a lurch absolutely unbothered. This is a black spot on Google.
  • They keep sending you emails with warnings about stuff you haven't even dreamed of doing. Saying absolutely shady stuff like "asking your family to click on ads for you is an invalid activity" What will I earn out of that, 25cents after a 1000clicks? Do you think my 80yr old granny has the energy to keep clicking something for 1000times?
  • They never have the courage to accept they've made a mistake and they may have collected some invalid data without considering all of the circumstances. And if you try to draw their attention to that, they give you a deaf ear. It is really sad, for such an amazing product. The attitude sucks big time.

  • Information - Criteo is unashamedly black-box and doesn't give customers the ability to audit the numbers. You have to put your faith in Criteo.
  • Budget inflation - sometimes Criteo will recommend bid increases which seem to show a lift in reach and clicks and orders, but when you contrast this with your other numbers time and time again we have seen no incremental impact from some of these spending splurges. Criteo has a level where it is effective, and going over that - the only winner is Criteo as you have spent more. Criteo will not be transparent with you where that level is so you have to work it out yourself.
  • Static CPC - unlike most platforms, you don't have an 'auction' for the click, you set a fixed CPC and this impacts every single click you have from most valubale to least. This means a bid increase of just 5% could have a 10%+ lift in spend for only a few more (less qualified) clicks.

Alternatives Considered

Better rates
Reply very often.
No fake copy paste customer service.
No high handedness in handling cases, they always listen.. And then make decisions, they never brand you a self clicker and ban your account when you are innocent

Return on Investment

  • Before I got into it my other friends told me there are way better Ad providers. But being a Google fan I still signed up.
  • Now I remember writing to AdMob, requesting them to give me earning rates... But they never replied. So zero return on investment. They just keep you guessing.

  • A slight increase in sales which is positive but we don't know how many are actually from existing customers even though we were told it would only taget non-existing customers.
