Adobe Acrobat DC

Good for any pdf editing that needs to happen. We use it to make fillable HR forms so we don't have to worry about formatting filled in word documents. You can also lock certain parts so when we have documents created by our legal team we can be assured that someone didn't edit anything when the filled it out digitally.

It is useful when you are dealing with complex data merges. For example, making a document that references a parent object, pulls in a table of information from a related object, displays certain pieces of information conditionally. Imagine terms and conditions where you want certain ones to appear in certain scenarios, or if you wanted to pull in a list of itemised items from a related object off an account (i.e. show all related Account Sites from a custom Site object).

Pros

  • Creating and editing PDF documents.
  • Gives us a professional platform to provide information to our employees that they desire to read.
  • Provides us with a one stop tool for everything related to PDF documents.

  • Deals with complex merges of data into a document.
  • Integrates into Salesforce, rather than sitting as a separate program.
  • Works well with other pieces of software like Adobe Sign and Financial Force.

Cons

  • When clicking "edit" in a PDF document it would be nice if DC would open automatically if you already have a license to use it.
  • It would be nice to have a cleaner interface to add images.
  • Working with text is a bit awkward and would be more efficient to have the window for font and size more accessible.

  • While it is a much easier experience than using code to arrive at a document solution, it can still get VERY technical. Beyond the click and drag style of document that you see in the demonstrations.
  • When it goes wrong, finding out WHERE it has gone wrong can be maddening. There is a lot of support out there but that sometimes translates to a vast amount of options to investigate when troubleshooting.

It's a big part of what we do internally, so would renew as it saves us time and is part of our process. In order to switch we'd need a good price break with same functions available

Usability

Adobe Acrobat DC8.0
Based on 1 answer
Overall, Adobe Acrobat DC provides an easy user interface. The program can take some time to get used to, just like most programming you use, but once the software is understood it is very easy for users to use. Compared to many programs this is very easy for people to use.

Performance

Adobe Acrobat DC8.0
Based on 1 answer
Overall, Adobe Acrobat DC performs at an acceptable rate. The software takes some time to load, but nothing that is unreasonable when launching a document. The program responds at a reasonable speed and performs well when operating tasks. It takes time for it to evaluate a document when you request to edit the document, but that is understandable considering it is identifying words and such in the document.

Alternatives Considered

Personally, I did not consider any other program for PDF manipulation because I am not aware of another choice for this type of software function. Adobe is so highly known and recommended that I felt comfortable just purchasing what I feel is the main brand of software.

In my mind, Conga blows away all the competition. The templates are extremely versatile and don't require any additional software (other than MS Office) in order to design. The support that Conga provides is world class and I never had a negative experience with them; all cases were resolved within a day or two of being opened. There is also an incredible amount of e-learning information available to help you get up and running.

Return on Investment

  • Positive impact -- easy to digest information quickly. Significantly easier to read through than a Word doc.
  • Not a game changer -- it just gets the job done

  • It basically suits a niche which would be unachievable without it.
  • Being bundled with FinancialForce, the ROI is hard to determine, as it is gauged against the parent program.
  • Would there have been a business case for the software without FinancialForce? I'm not sure. I've never quite reached that tipping point to recommend it.
