Adobe Acrobat DC

People who are editing documents frequently, especially PDF documents, will really benefit from Adobe Acrobat DC. Also, people are creating simple graphics for distribution to their consumers will benefit from using Adobe Acrobat DC. People who are not frequently editing PDFs, or who do not need to edit PDFs at all will do fine with the free version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Laserfiche

Laserfiche is ideal for digitizing and streamlining the workplace. Business processes can be automated very quickly with the robust tools provided. The limitations will be about understanding the processes enough to automate them properly, which requires a collaboration of information technology with the business. Laserfiche is an enterprise-class solution requiring a robust infrastructure to support it including a scalable RDBMS back end like SQL-Server or Oracle, so smaller organizations might want to consider a cloud-hosted solution, rather than hosting it in-house. Additionally, best practices need to be put in place quickly or else the repository can easily become a mess. I would recommend professional services to help get started on the right footing. One item that Laserfiche could do better is providing a corporate portal solution. As the central repository, it is the de facto backend to a portal and would make sense to provide a UI. They do have a product called Discussions which provides a collaboration site, so they are on the right track. Finally, while they do offer an entry point into RPA, there are products that focus solely on that space and are far more sophisticated for managing bots.

Pros

Adobe Acrobat DC

  • Can take ANY PDF and edit it in just a few clicks.
  • Can embed live links, easily.
  • Can scan ANY image, and edit it easily and quickly.
  • We run digital marketing campaigns where we take our eBook, Drawing On Brilliance and customize it to each brand we are working with. The eBook we use is one-of-a-kind, with a well-proven 100% customer engagement rate so being able to include each brand sponsors logo means a viral, lifetime of end customer exposure is invaluable - ROI for life.
  • Apple's decision to not allow live links in their pdf docs anymore, drove many of us to Adobe. Live links are critically important in marketing docs as they give the end-user the opportunity to read what they value, and deeper-dive as they feel the need to. We also can use these live links in our data analytics when we measure depth of engagement. That's ROI for our customers, ROI for us as we then adapt quickly to that digital feedback (more of what works, less of what does not etc...)
  • This capability opens all kinds of new opportunities for us. Our creative team is always scouting new sources of inspirational ideas. They were always scanning with their mobile devices. We just started to exploit this capability now that we have Adobe Acrobat DC and it's super easy to use. We scan as we always have, upload it to Adobe and edit away - as if we had created the original image ourselves. We're able to take the original scan and create an endless stream of new ways to turn it into what will engage our customers and their end-users too.

Laserfiche

  • Electronic content management- it provides backup, versioning, access controls, retention policies, powerful search, metadata, and routing. It provides several facilities for importing scanning documents including OCR.
  • Business Process Automation via workflow. Built on Microsoft WWF technology, Laserfiche provides a developer studio (designer) for rapid, visual development. It contains dozens of pre-built objects to accomplish numerous tasks, including document routing, rules, and web API integrations.
  • Electronic Forms- an easy to use interface for creating input forms which can be routed, saved to the repository, and integrated into a workflow.
  • Robotic Process Automation- Laserfiche has put an emphasis on developing their RPA solution to be a serious player in this space. Their RPA bots can be easily integrated into business process automation (BPAs).

Cons

Adobe Acrobat DC

  • Program size. By far, the main drawback is that my computer does not have enough processing capability to handle. It is VERY slow to install and often slow to open too.
  • Functionality. There are some types of commenting that the program does not handle as well (e.g., hand written comments that you want to try to put in with your mouse).
  • Licenses. You only get two licenses with each subscription, which can make it expensive to implement in a large scale format.

Laserfiche

  • While Laserfiche has some powerful development tools, it is difficult to manage configurations while promoting code across environments. For example, SQL connections and other environment specific resources have to be manually configured in each environment.
  • Laserfiche forms are a newer addition to the product family and could use some product maturity. While easy to use for simple forms, once your forms become more complex, you need to accomplish tasks by heavy JavaScript coding.

Overall, Adobe Acrobat DC provides an easy user interface. The program can take some time to get used to, just like most programming you use, but once the software is understood it is very easy for users to use. Compared to many programs this is very easy for people to use.

I am very satisfied with Laserfiche. I have found that certain larger jobs may are slow. This may also be related to our infrastructure environment. We have been able to tune Laserfiche to increase performance on larger jobs.

Performance

Adobe Acrobat DC 8.3

Overall, Adobe Acrobat DC performs at an acceptable rate. The software takes some time to load, but nothing that is unreasonable when launching a document. The program responds at a reasonable speed and performs well when operating tasks. It takes time for it to evaluate a document when you request to edit the document, but that is understandable considering it is identifying words and such in the document.

Performance, of course, is largely dependent on the underlying environment. Laserfiche does its part with multi-threading, taking advantage of multi-core servers on scanning, workflows, and bots. A SQL-Server back-end is suitable for small to medium-sized company, but may not scale to large, where Oracle would be the better choice. Workflows can be poorly written and perform recursive work slowing down the system. It's better to run batch type workflows at night when possible.

Good overall. Some inquires could not be resolved or they were pushed to the next release which made it difficult at times to figure out a work around, but it was great to know that they listen to their clients and are willing to enhance the product as requested.

Easily accessible 24/7 so am able to complete courseware whenever time allows: Commute to work; waiting for friends or family; at night while relaxing [with a delicious glass of wine!]; whenever and wherever time and circumstances permit.Courseware is well written and presented in an easy to follow and understand format.

Alternatives Considered

Adobe Acrobat DC

Adobe Acrobat DC provides much greater functionality and features than these other programs. Splitpdf and Combinepdf are only free sources that split or combine pdfs, but they are not necessarily secure, and they only do one function. They also require internet to operate. Adobe Acrobat Reader is what everyone uses, and allows viewing of pdfs, but it does not enable splitting, merging, or marking up pdfs.

Laserfiche

The core infrastructure of Laserfiche, and the end user experience, is vastly superior. OnBase has a TERRIBLE UI and administration console by comparison. The core architecture of OnBase is also more scattered, while all Laserfiche processes go through a single service. Overall, the Laserfiche product is easier and more intuitive to install, maintain, and use.

Return on Investment

Adobe Acrobat DC

  • It could be cheaper (what couldn't?!), but it's not that bad as far as pricing goes.

Laserfiche

  • It is hard to quantify the value of the time saved, and the value of having documents immediately available at your fingertips, but we are relatively new to Laserfiche and it has already provided a high return on investment and the value will continue to grow as we implement it further.
