Adobe Acrobat DC

Adobe Acrobat DC is necessary and well suited for professionals who receive multiple PDFs from various sources, and need a program to view those. Depending on the version, the option to redact info and covert non-PDFs to PDFs is also very necessary. Less appropriate situations for needing this program would be graphic designers, as photoshop would have similar capabilities. having the capabilities of photoshop as an expectation and then opening up adobe acrobat usually leads to disappointment at Adobe's limitations.

I am still experimenting with PDFelement 6 Pro. Though I must say in my testing it did an OCR of a scanned 16-page newsletter and did a very good job, considering how primitive this newsletter was (it was typewritten on an IBM Selectric maybe three decades ago). On better scanned documents I imagine it will do even better.

Pros

Adobe Acrobat DC

  • Adobe Acrobat works particularly well with opening documents quickly and not having compatibility issues with various sources of documents.
  • Also, if you do not need some of the more advanced features that the more expensive professional version provides, there are free or less expensive versions that better suit your needs. that flexibility is welcome
  • The UI of zooming into documents that might have smaller font or unclear information is very helpful, and generally, anyone can sit down and figure out how to work the program with very little training. It's very intuitive.

Cons

Adobe Acrobat DC

  • Accessibility hints. While the accessibility tool is great, we often have users who don't know how to fix certain issues. Tool tips would help.
  • Reduce file size without quality loss. Large file sizes can be troublesome for mobile users. Adobe Acrobat DC has tools to save PDFs at a smaller size, but that often means losing overall quality.
  • More options for form distribution. Currently, form distribution only works through email, but expanding that to web integration would be extremely helpful.

Alternatives Considered

Adobe Acrobat DC

We tried Flip PDF Pro for Mac, but the software didn't have the accessibility features we need. Plus, most of our web agents across campus are working on PCs, so it didn't make sense to use software they wouldn't have access to use. Adobe Acrobat DC was a great universal solution that fit our needs

Return on Investment

Adobe Acrobat DC

  • Adobe Acrobat DC has greatly reduced our number of new accessibility issues.
  • Adobe Acrobat DC is easy enough for most users that request for ADA compliant PDFs no longer come through the web office, so our workflow is much more streamlined.
  • Adobe Acrobat DC has allowed us to generate fillable forms more easily, resulting in less time trying to interpret poor penmanship.

  • As a personal program, It has come in handy in so many ways. I can extract pages and convert them to take out text.
  • I think the price is a bit high to upgrade so I have reneged on the cost of upgrading. The internet idea is great, but if I use an online program the cost versus Adobe is minimal. At this point, I do not want to be dependent on the internet to do conversions.
