Adobe Acrobat DC

Digital marketing campaigns no longer have technical interoperability limits. We can create, A/B test and adapt as quickly as results come in. We can move seamlessly from an image we saw on an ad while on commuter rail, to a word doc where we play with new copy or a redesign and launch a brand new test campaign by the time we get back to the office. There is a learning curve, at first, and there are still a few technical challenges between our Macs and Adobe. It's really Apple not wanting to play well with the MSFT world. But we got through it and you will too.

PowerDMS

PowerDMS is an excellent tool to be used in a law enforcement setting. Being able to run reports on policies and procedures gives management the ability to verify that these documents have been reviewed, received and understood by staff. It also provides a central repository for all critical documents including policies, procedures, training courses and certificates, accreditation related materials, maps, and countless other activities.

Pros

  • Dynamic. Changes the way you think about static word/pdf documents
  • Deep. Has tons of things that can be done. From combining multiple pdf's into one or breaking up pdf workbooks into multiple single pages.
  • Gives you an unlimited amount of tools to adjust and tweak forms to meet your business needs.

  • PowerDMS provides management with a real-time tracking of policy reviews, approvals, and signatures. This is a great benefit for risk management.
  • PowerDMS allows users to incorporate remote, web-based training in a variety of formats including, but not limited to, video, PowerPoint, miscellaneous documents, interactive activities, and tests.
  • PowerDMS provides a very robust search engine that is very user-friendly.

Cons

  • When clicking "edit" in a PDF document it would be nice if DC would open automatically if you already have a license to use it.
  • It would be nice to have a cleaner interface to add images.
  • Working with text is a bit awkward and would be more efficient to have the window for font and size more accessible.

  • Most of my complaints or suggestions are regarding the iPhone app. I wish there were more administrative functions on the app, such as approving workflows from training requests or document approvals, along with managing user profiles such as password resets.

We have given little or no training to end users just to see how usable this software is, and virtually all of them have been able to hit the ground running with it. We occasionally have to help, but it is 99% forgotten passwords. I have, to date, never had to hand walk anyone through anything.

Alternatives Considered

Having previously used Nitro Pro, we were pleased to gain the additional functionality that Adobe provides. Sending and tracking documents is much easier than on Nitro. The support function is slicker and quicker and there is a wider community of users to draw upon. I didn't like the initial Acrobat DC offering but it's apparent they've really worked hard on the more recent releases to ensure previous feedback was captured and more importantly acted upon. I still believe Bluebeam to be a credible alternative.

Return on Investment

  • Increased efficiency with organization & management of documents
  • Easier access from anywhere
  • Makes our general work easier
Andrew Bullard, MPA SHRM-CP profile photo
  • Easier management of training documentation. It is now stored in one place.
  • Unable to customize dashboards or individual users views of items within PowerDMS. If it was customizable than everyday users may be more likely to log in.
  • We are 100 percent compliant with all training requirements versus when we started we were about 40 percent in compliance.
