Adobe Analytics

Adobe Analytics is well-suited for quick analysis of our website/mobile app especially at a summarized level. Where we start using other tools is when we have to get really granular, such as at a single customer level, though this is partly a product of how our pages are tagged.

Alteryx Analytics

I wish I had found and used Alteryx Analytics years ago. Having multiple data sources with a variety of naming conventions for our businesses we spent WEEKS cleaning/reorganizing/renaming fields in our data to be able to consolidate. We did this on one set of reports for one use. Each time we wanted an update this process would need to be repeated. This took tons of useless admin time. Had we had Alteryx we could have created 1 identifier, noted all the different naming conventions or issues, selected the ones we wanted and created the workflow to use it over and over and over again on any data we wanted. Build once - use multiple times. It would have been (and now is) a HUGE time saver. Plus any new anomalies are identified by the program as errors so you can "autocorrect" them in the same workflow. Alteryx is a miracle in my opinion.

Pros

  • Easy to create segments and apply them instantly to reporting
  • Easy to use out of the box metrics and to create custom metrics
  • Beautiful UI that allows the user easy access to reporting and dashboards
Natasha Watts profile photo
  • User-friendly interface - the tool structure and general workspace are very easy to pick up on. Short learning curve from "no experience" to "beginner user".
  • Standardization - modules/wizards allow a single tool to generate results for multiple clients, all through the use of a few actions/inputs.
  • Analytics - wide range of statistical analytics tools makes it easy for a user to look at data and provide simple summary statistics, while also having the ability to build advanced regression models.

Cons

  • Undo button - You wouldn't believe how many times I accidentally do something and "look" for an undo button!
  • We use Ad Hoc in addition to Omniture (due to limited user seats in Ad Hoc). I enjoy working in Ad Hoc more because of the "instant" reporting from dragging and dropping Segments, Metrics and Dimensions. Other business owners who use Omniture and find it difficult to use compared to Ad Hoc.

  • I've had issues with the scheduler tool getting frozen or stuck in previous versions. For about the last 2-3 months the latest software version has been much more reliable. Previously I had to restart the Alteryx service on my machine at least once a week, which meant my workflows weren't running while the service had been stuck and data wasn't moving.
  • Some of the connectors, like the Tableau Online connector, should become supported by Alteryx. The online community is fantastic and has created a ton of useful macros and it would be great if Alteryx would adopt, support, and enhance some of the most widely used and useful.

We've found multiple uses for Adobe Analytics in our organization. Each department analyzes the data they need and creates actionables based off of that data. For E-Commerce, we're constantly using data to analyze user engagement, website performance and evaluate ROI.

I will likely continue to use Alteryx because it allows quick, customizable data analysis. Often, I will be given a business question, which I might not know how to answer, but after getting into Alteryx, dragging and dropping some tools, I can formulate the answer. At the same time, this is definitely a niche software (not something that would ever be adopted by my entire company), which makes it a bit less appealing to some.

I use Ad Hoc and Omniture. If I had to compare the two (which I have throughout the review), I would have to give AA an overall 9. We do not pay for "Adobe Workspace" and have limited seats available for Ad Hoc. I've experienced frustration with creating reports in Omniture and waiting for the page to reload.

Through a graphical UI one can perform engineering and development, other vendors do not have such a code-less interface.

Adobe SiteCatalyst has great actual uptime in the most standard sense, but long lag times in data during critical time periods (i.e. Holidays) I would consider to be an issue with availability.

I use many programs and compared to others, Alteryx virtually never goes down, freezes up or gives an application error. Over a 4 year time period that I have used this program, any of these may have happened 3 times. It is an incredibly stable program that I feel completely confident in.

Support

Adobe Analytics5.7

I give the rating of a 4 just because it seems more like a process that is failing. Any time I have put a request in, they have taken days, sometimes weeks, to get back to me and even then, the issue may still persist. I believe this is the biggest weakness of the Adobe Analytics tool and has a lot of room for improvement.

In-Person Training

Adobe Analytics3.6
Based on 3 answers
It was a one-day training several years ago that cost the organization several thousand dollars. There were only about 10 people in the training class. Adobe tried to cram so much information into that one-day class that none of our users felt like they really learned anything helpful from the experience. Follow-up training is too expensive

Videos of the different tools plus the knowledge base articles, but you do have to take the initiative to do them yourself. There are also a few great books on the subject. *Nod to Adam Greco's SiteCatalyst Handbook

Make sure you use a Tag Management System. Enterprise TMS solutions used to be very pricey but Adobe now offers DTM (previously Satellite) for free.

There is really not much to it (the installation, that is). Once you get it installed, along with any of the add-ons (demographics, R, etc.), you are up and running almost immediately. There is really no additional setup. You can immediately begin blending data, running demographics, performing spatial queries, running predictive analysis, etc. And for many of these functions, the learning curve is quite easy.

Alternatives Considered

I believe that Adobe Analytics really stands alone at the top of the reporting and analytics industry. They have a desire to be the best and are continually working to provide a more enhanced and real-time data analytics world that a lot of other reporting tools are lagging.
Nathan Normand profile photo
It has much more data connections and flexibility but writing queries manually is typically more flexible. It stacks up very high. Good data, Alteryx and Tableau, and a user can be prepared for an impromptu meeting and make a big impact. I haven't used anything like Alteryx for a direct comparison since they have a pretty unique piece of the market.

Functionality and user-friendliness of the software makes cross-team collaboration very seamless. Multiple internal teams have access to wizards that allow them to generate data/reports that are relevant to their day-to-day, and while clients do not get direct access to the Alteryx wizard, the automations allow for the same reports to be generated off of multiple clients' data. This makes products more easy to implement on a client-to-client basis.

Return on Investment

  • Campaign optimisation, we run many campaigns so getting rapid feedback is essential for making changes or terminating if there's poor performance.
  • It's the essential tool for telling us how to make change on our website.
  • An essential 2nd data source for cross checking data from BI and other systems.
  • Increased employee efficiency as users become self sufficient with data opposed to making requests through BI.
Richard Hayes profile photo
  • It gets the job done fast.
  • It lends itself well for people with a less-technical aptitude to understand the data process.
  • It empower the user to come up with any possible solution to a problem.
