Adobe Analytics

Adobe Analytics being only one part of a much larger marketing suite, you need to define your needs to understand how this package will integrate with other solutions. It is enterprise level and provides all of the tools you should need. You should pay attention to the usage pricing model to ensure you do not experience overage charges and plan for growth. To implement any level of decent customization, you should have extensive javascript/jquery knowledge. If you intend to use support, consider trying to build in some measurements to qualify a successful support experience.

Signal Tag Management

Signal becomes as flexible as any other tag management solution if you're able define the data layer requirements clearly to your development team. The interface is very outdated if you're coming from Google Tag Manager. You might have to know some sort of JavaScript if you plan to make changes to the properties of some tags.

Pros

  • Reliable servers providing excellent uptime.
  • Extensive customization which includes a significant amount of custom variables, limited only by coding ability and imagination.
  • Continuous development with new features and enhancements released often.

  • Populating your library with new tags is simple whether you're duplicating an existing tag or creating an entirely new one.
  • Creating the firing conditions for a tag.
  • Adding users to different groups with limited or full admin permissions.
  • If you know JavaScript, you shouldn't have an issue with assigning values to the proper variables once your data layer is set up for each page and/or action.

Cons

  • User interface is not intuitive. Personally I have no issues because I have used it for so long. All new users have a long learning curve to get up to speed and comfortable running reports to meet their needs.
  • Support has become abysmal over the years. Omniture used to offer great support, fast and helpful. Adobe support has errored very quickly with extremely long response delays, unhelpful responses. To be fair, certain support cases are resolved quickly and efficiently. But the majority over the past 2 years have been a dreadful experience with many of those tickets still outstanding and unresolved.
  • Improve consistency in user experience. Many tools that Adobe offers are seemingly built upon different platforms which result in a very disjointed user experience and inconsistent usability.

  • We have a console debugger that alerts when a Signal tag is firing. The problem is it refers to the Signal Tag ID which is unsearchable in the Signal interface. The only way to identify the Tag ID is by clicking on each tag to access its settings.
  • Adding new elements to your dropdown list for Post Event Conditionals isn't as easy as Google Tag Manager. It requires a number of steps that aren't clearly defined in Signal's documentation.
  • Access to documentation on implementation isn't easily accessible. Forced to use the search feature which isn't that helpful OR to contact your Signal account rep.

  • New pricing models are very expensive compared to old pricing model, even though it includes several additional tools, most of which seem to be beneficial
  • Horrible support experience despite working with escalation teams to try and resolve
  • Several bugs in recent releases which remain unresolved for many months at a time

Because of all of the previous benefits that I mentioned, GM has mandated that any DSP that we use for their campaigns must be integrated with BrightTag. Therefore we will have to use BrightTag for all future GM business

Usability

Based on new user feedback, everyone has found it challenging to find what they need and customize reports to meet their desired outcomes. Different interfaces have inconsistent presentations and layouts which compound the challenge.

Support

I've personally not had to work with customer service or technical support. However, people in my department that have reached out to Adobe/Omniture support have had mixed result. It seems to depend on if you have a good account manager on the vendor side, and if they are able to connect you with the appropriate support help. The general support line is as helpful as most 1-800 numbers

In-Person Training

Adobe Analytics3.6
Based on 3 answers
Myself and others have found the in-person training ok, but not outstanding. Trainers are good at explaining how to use the product features, but sometimes lack "real-world" experience on how to use the product as they are people who have often not previously been web analysts. There is also a shortcoming in company-provided training on advanced uses of the product. The implementation training is very good.

The SiteCatalyst training was so-so. It was more of white papers and forums than actual training.

Implementation

Adobe Analytics8.0

The success of implementations depend primarily on the solution design, and also on the ability to work with developers to get the solution implemented correctly. This is not an aspect of the product per se.

Alternatives Considered

We also use Google Analytics. I still use Google Analytics for evaluating Google Adwords, but use Adobe Analytics for most of my day to day analysis. We chose Adobe analytics because we were using some other Adobe products that this ties into nicely. We also wanted better ways to segment our traffic between our B2B and B2C and this gave us the flexibility we needed

Most of the tag solutions I've worked with were not nearly as robust. Most systems will let you load another tag not directly placed on the site, but none provide all the different firing levers that BT does

Return on Investment

  • Adobe SiteCatalyst derives its ROI from improvements made to the website and conversion rate increases that can be attributed directly to use of SiteCatalyst.

  • BT has calmed the client down, we are no longer at fault for misbehaving tags. Not much on the ROI front.
