Adobe Audience Manager

If you feel as though your online presence isn't quite hitting where it should, Adobe Audience Manager (AAM) might provide the insights to help you identify the areas in which it is lacking (the gaps). As a result, you can adjust your approach and optimize your customer interactions. With that said, if you currently deploy software for the analysis of customer data, you should consider whether AAM will add value. I would suggest setting some strategic objectives so that you can ensure that AAM will meet your current and future needs.

Tableau Server

Tableau does a great job of providing a simple interface to access various dashboards by groups, and has powerful development tools, but they can be a little quirky. It would be much better if there were better admin tools to analyze data sources, the dependencies in the database, and who owns the various dashboards throughout the system.

Pros

  • We are able to generate reports that provide valuable insights into potential customer behavior, allowing us to better focus our marketing efforts.
  • By allowing us to understand who are key audiences are and how they overlap with other brands and products, AAM allows us to get a fuller picture of how we should target our audience.
  • Reporting in AAM is wonderful in that it is easy to understand and exportable. The use of graphics and updates make it easier to share insights with various team members--even those with minimum experience in marketing and analytics.

  • Self service publishing - Before Tableau Server, most reporting was done by central report writers on a request basis, and the backlog never ended. Now a great deal of the reporting is "self service" within the departments, freeing IT Business Intelligence (BI) staff to focus on the reporting tasks requiring more expertise.
  • It is VERY easy for folks to publish their creations from Tableau Desktop directly to Tableau Server.
  • Starting with "template" projects, many users don't have to have Tableau Desktop but can simply "clone" the template (data connections "baked in") and create new dashboards with nothing more than their browser. This is very cost effective.
  • We have created several Enterprise Mobile Applications for iPhones/iPads and it is very easy to integrate analytics provided by Tableau Server into our custom in-house applications. This GREATLY simplifies the development of sophisticated mobile BA tools.

Cons

  • Overall, AAM is a great software but it is also expensive. I would advise those considering it to give time to the trial first before fully committing.
  • Mobile analysis is not all that it's cracked up to be, with an inability to accurate track which mobile stats are unique. This might have changed since we used the mobile analytics.
  • While the insights are great for sharing, training users on how to use AAM can be challenging as it doesn't seem geared to the average user. Perhaps Adobe can provide more robust training tools or suggestions to make this transition smoother.

  • They are already moving toward not requiring any special desktop software to create dashboards from scratch. It will be nice when they finally get there. The biggest hassle we have with getting new Tableau users installed is that Tableau Desktop requires Admin rights on the PC to install. We don't generally allow that, so end users have to get PC support staff involved to do that installation. All of that goes away when Web UI users of Tableau Server can do everything folks with Tableau Desktop can do in terms of creating new projects from scratch.
  • Tableau Server could be "Dockerized" allowing easier installation. Containerization is the wave of the future as opposed to "Full Stack" installations.

As we look to expand our analytics capabilities we are seeking the best product to meet our needs in this area. Tableau by far meets our needs and expectations in this area. If by chance another product comes to the marketplace that overtakes Tableau then we would have to take a long hard look at our investment. But, at this time we see nothing on the horizon that fits the bill for that criteria

I think the use case we described earlier about a non-technical user that was copying/pasting data into Word during emergencies is our best reason. This person had little technical ability, and the Tableau mobile solution powered by Tableau server completely resolved the issues. She has since become one of the most vocal proponents of Tableau.

Desktop has always worked perfectly. Server sees occasional issues, most of which will be solved by the IT department learning more about the best way to administrate and maintain it.

Due to it's skillful use of in-memory processing and columnar data structures ensures optimal performance. However, with larger data sets, especially with LIVE connections to back-end DBMS platforms, performance degrades quickly. However, with minimal planning and Tableau data extracts, exceptional performance is achievable.

In our case, they hired a private third party consultant to train our dept. It was extremely boring and felt like it dragged on. Everything I learned was self taught so I was not really paying attention. But I do think that you can easily spend a week on the tool and go over every nook and cranny. We only had the consultant in for a day or two.

Alternatives Considered

From a main user standpoint, we selected AAM due to my experience with it and our ability to easily integrate it with our currently system. While we evaluated the other options, it was Adobe's customer service and reputation that ultimately served as an additional reason to deploy AAM instead of other options. I cannot for certain say that it is 100% more effective or useful than the other options, but it has served us well. As with all potential solutions, evaluating what works best in your current environment will inevitably lead you to the right choice.

There were a lot of reasons why we chose Tableau and the least is the cost but also the way Tableau stores data in the columnar fashion instead of in Cubes. We went through a painstaking selection process and at the end, came down to a couple of vendors and we ended up with the product that was least to pair up with Amazon Web Services to create a decent and cost-effective proof of concept and we landed with the solution we have today.

Tableau Server is otherwise very easy and user-friendly. Being a GUI based software it is super easy to learn as well. With Tableau Server you can expect to share data with all the users on your community. Servers can be accessed across all platforms, hence you can easily transfer data as well.

It is so hard to add data to the Tableau Server. I could do it after I download it to my Tableau Desktop. Also creating an online extract needs a lot of time and a good internet connection to set things up. Tableau Desktop seems to be a better option in such cases.

Return on Investment

  • We have seen a near 20% increase in revenue on targeted customers through employing our insights from AAM.
  • We have seen a better understanding by our sales team on how targeted marketing works in addition to the use of cold calling. This has made our sales team more productive and effective in generating and securing new business.
  • We have elevated our marketing discourse in the organization, where marketing was previously relevant but not always front of mind. This has allowed members of the overall team to better understand how we can leverage data and marketing to grow our business.
Matt LeMaire, B.A., M.A. profile photo
  • We have to reduce datasize in most cases
  • Helps us to collaborate with one another
  • We need to have copies of data in our own machine, when we need to append some extra features in our data
