The service provision is good the accounts customer service is poor so I would struggle to give BC a better than average review, if only they could offer customers a better accounts service then the value would be much higher.

Clickability

Why give it a 10? I shudder at the thought of using anything else to manage and deliver websites reliably to our nationwide audiences. With our very minimal staff of software engineers (with great personalities) we have been able to innovate and satisfy our internal newsroom demands, which are high to the extreme. Our team is very agile and has adapted well to the changing times in the past 4 years that I have been senior software engineer, and team lead. The 10 is for flexibility, extensibility, reliability, and the freedom we experience as developers.

Cons

  • The Web Forms is very helpful and easy to create. Placing the forms is simple especially when inserting as a module. The problem comes after placement. It is time consuming if there are any edits that need to be made to the form. For example, if you are in the U.S., you typically do not want other countries to show up on a dropdown menu. It would be great if BC would allow you to check the countries (or states) that you want to be active. Also, often times within a web form you may want to include to separate address fields. That is not allowed unless you go back and do custom editing for the forms. "Workarounds" are typically possible but for the designer, anything that adds time to the process also cuts down on profitability.
  • Where we enjoy the ease of creating Photo Galleries, we also don't like the fact that you can style the output like you can within other module templates. For example, many clients would like to offer better descriptions and even style the descriptions. If displaying a photo from a art museum, you may want to give the proper title and that would include italicizing the name of the artwork.
  • One of our biggest pet peeves is the fact that BC only offers the European date style when displaying that dates in the modules. You should be able to check a box on which date style should be shown.
  • On Web Apps, almost everything is fantastic EXCEPT for the ability to sort web app items by date. If I wanted to create a calendar of events based on a web app I want to create, I would want to be able to display those items in chronological order.
  • The Event Module is great except the way it uses a quirky form to process payments and reserve events. It should behave more like an ecommerce solution where the form is easier to fill out, customize, submit and process.

  • The UI presentation was developed before tabbed-browsing became available/popular, thus you can run into serious trouble if you are not careful.
  • The security implementation, while allowing extreme granularity (good), has become extremely difficult to manage over time (bad).
  • We have written our own web-based front-end UIs in order to compensate for the somewhat awkward content entry experience that the UI provides.

Likelihood to Renew

Adobe Business Catalyst9.4
Based on 10 answers
Actually with Business Catalyst there is no renewal; once you are a partner, you are a partner for as long as you like. It is an investment in your business not simply a product you purchase...and as an investment in partnership with Adobe, both are committed to each other's success.

We have an in-house CMS that we are changing to. It handles section set up differently, but relies on a third-party for navigation. It's not as robust, but is still in development. There are some things that it handles in the same way (story creation, breaking news alerts, etc.), but will be a big change from the Clickablity platform.

Usability

Adobe Business Catalyst9.7
Based on 4 answers
Overall it is a "plug and play" interface. The majority of the work is done in other software interfaces. Managing billing, user roles and custom reports are all that you need to manage in the actual BC user interface. For my business this is an incredible benefit as I have to leave my preferred software less.

Support

Adobe Business Catalyst8.6
Based on 5 answers
The support provided by Adobe is excellent. Though the knowledge base, forums, blogs and online chat questions most all answers can be found. In the event that you are unable to find an answer or you have a unique situation simply post a question to the forums. These forums are regularly monitored by Adobe and its users.

I found that some agents were better then others, usually you have an account representative and that I would consider level 1 support. To get really complex answers you need to talk with an engineer.

Alternatives Considered

We didn't really used many products before deciding to use Business Catalyst. When we started we developed sites using an old product (GoLive) and then created a few sites in WordPress. We didn't like that fact that WordPress needed an add-on every time we wanted additional functionality and trying keep on top of updates was distracting.Adobe's Business Catalyst gave us an all in one system to replace the multiple products clients required to run their online businesses. We also didn't have to remember which sites had what add-ons updated...or not. Business Catalyst is SaaS which allows us to always have the latest updates and functionality ready at our fingertips.

Worldnow and IBSYS were the two biggest competitors for the markets we were in. Cost was a huge factor because Clickability is by far cheaper then the other two in most use cases. Each varies depending on the contract you can negotiate. Really it just comes down to what are you doing with the platform. Ad's and revenue can be a huge factor and Worldnow and IBSYS provide extensive support in those areas Clickability does not; however clickability is so flexable that you can use Google or other plug and play ad networks with ease. If you already have ad software you are used to you may not be allowed to use it with Worldnow and IBSYS and before forced to use their systems.

Return on Investment

  • Business Catalyst provides partners and clients a single system to learn and maintain. No need to constantly switch gears to remember who has what CMS which makes support more efficient.
  • Business Catalyst has made it possible to create and launch sites in less time thus increasing profitability.
  • Business Catalyst is a large investment in the beginning about monetarily and in learning the system. It may not affordable to smaller agencies.

  • Faster turn around time for adding new features.
  • Cost savings on IT personal.
  • Ability to work from anywhere built in is a huge plus.
