Adobe Business Catalyst

I feel that Adobe Business Catalyst (BC) is best suited to small businesses and free lance designers reselling to small businesses. The whole interface is very personal and easy to use from an inexperienced perspective. This makes it a perfect platform for small business websites or even portfolio websites. Its lack of different server side protocols and languages makes it perfect for the small scale web implementation.

Pros

  • The Web Apps element of Business Catalyst is unique among hosted CMS systems. It helps us solve unique challenges without involving heavy-duty programmers.
  • As a Hosted CMS, it has a lot of great features without a ton of cost or liability being taken on which is important to us.
  • BC has a growing developer community and has made significant upgrades over the past few years, which don't end up costing us more, and would be very expensive or time consuming in a traditional CMS
  • Our client's like that it is from "Adobe" and that it has Dreamweaver integration. This provides them with a level of comfort that helps us sell the project.

  • CoreMedia is a robust system that can manage large sites with multiple, well-organized subsites.
  • CoreMedia has a built-in workflow system that functions well for a distributed contributor model.

Cons

  • It is SaaS, so the initial savings can seem costly if the site owner wants to redesign. It is still less costly than having a professional enterprise site built for you, but you will be limited by your budget.
  • It has been a while since I used it, but custom pages for businesses on Facebook was something that needed to be built by a developer and implemented.

  • CoreMedia, although robust, is also complex. It is not easy to teach or learn, especially when a contributor is not in the system on a daily basis.
  • The user interface is built with developers in mind, but not with contributors in mind. It is hard to navigate and not easy to learn or remember.
  • Some of the terms are confusing. With the translation from German to English, not everything was translated well for an English-based American user base and it is easy to get confused whether one is, for example, marking something for deletion or actually deleting something.

Likelihood to Renew

Actually with Business Catalyst there is no renewal; once you are a partner, you are a partner for as long as you like. It is an investment in your business not simply a product you purchase...and as an investment in partnership with Adobe, both are committed to each other's success.

I am ultimately not a part of the team that would make this decision, but as a content contributor who works in CoreMedia daily, I would suggest looking for a content system that allows for more customization of our site. I think there is a lot of work to be done on the back end to make this the product we want to stick with.

Usability

Adobe Business Catalyst9.7
Based on 4 answers
Overall it is a "plug and play" interface. The majority of the work is done in other software interfaces. Managing billing, user roles and custom reports are all that you need to manage in the actual BC user interface. For my business this is an incredible benefit as I have to leave my preferred software less.

Support

The support provided by Adobe is excellent. Though the knowledge base, forums, blogs and online chat questions most all answers can be found. In the event that you are unable to find an answer or you have a unique situation simply post a question to the forums. These forums are regularly monitored by Adobe and its users.

Set aside more time than you think you need to migrate content. That is the hard part. Implementing the technology is easy.

Alternatives Considered

Adobe Business Catalyst has Web Apps which makes all the difference between them and competitors. Without that, BC would be behind many of the other CMS systems out there. Being a hosted system without any maintenance needs also puts it ahead of others. LightCMS is easier for clients to use, but not as customization and Evoq or DNN is over complex but a stronger platform..

While CoreMedia has a better workflow, django CMS has a much easier user interface, wysiwyg editor, and is superior on every other level. Django CMS is easier to teach and support, easier to manage and develop, and provides much more flexibility in the development and design areas.

Return on Investment

  • Better customer service
  • Faster site builds.
  • Workflow notifications and faster response time.
Nancy Sheridan profile photo
  • Once trained, users really ramp up, but getting them to switch mindsets has not been easy or painless.
  • We can easily show ROI with add-ons and increasingly do so.
  • Since it's a very large site, we have to go a bit slower than everyone would like in terms of the roll-out.
