The service provision is good the accounts customer service is poor so I would struggle to give BC a better than average review, if only they could offer customers a better accounts service then the value would be much higher.

Ektron (Discontinued)

I think Ektron is good for enterprise use where bang for the buck is a priority and there is a commitment to having an on-staff web team: developer, cms administrator, and lead author (at a minimum). For small organization use, I question if it is the best value in terms of staffing required and overkill of functionality; open-source options may be a better fit in this case. Ektron is great when there is lots of structured content that needs to be managed, displayed, and/or repurposed. If you are working with mostly free-form content, and at a smaller organization, I think there are other better options.

  • Security is good
  • Technical Service is good

  • Content authoring is a strength of the CMS. The interface is relatively simple to understand and utilize and most users feel comfortable finding, editing and publishing content with just a short introduction or training session.
  • The integrated community, marketing and commerce tools simplify the administration of more complex websites and provide a single place and unified methodology for managing all web-facing content and capabilities.
  • Page Builder, as a platform, really provides a lot of flexibility for content authors to create the exact experience users want while not requiring developers to create new templates or layouts to support their initiatives. Embracing the Page Builder / Widget architecture yields considerable flexibility for content authors.

Cons

Adobe Business Catalyst (Discontinued)

  • They do not have the ability to create and build custom plug-ins for use on websites.
  • They do not support every payment gateway, they support the major ones, and most others, but if you have some very unusual payment gateway, it might not be supported.
  • The custom web apps were absolutely one of my favorite parts of this system, and it is really a shame that they do not allow them to be used on all tiers of the website, you have to get the web commerce tier to edit and use them.

  • Pricing - My concern around pricing is not limited to Ektron; but, is a symptomatic problem with the majority of the products in this space. Overtime, the pricing model has changed; and, has created a barrier to entry for smaller/mid market customers.
  • Modules - Similar to pricing (and definitely not limited to Ektron), the optional add-on modules are attractive; but, have created a barrier to entry. During the sales process, varies modules/functionality are shown to entice the buyers decision making process; however, it becomes sticker shock when they learn that the modules are not part of the base model.
  • eCommerce - I've been working with the Ektron product for close to 8 years; and, during this time, I have heard that there are only a handful (10 or less) eCommerce implementations running in a production environment today.

Most WCM implementations can be expensive to replace especially if they have customizations and integration. They become embedded at times within the organization. We find that evaluations occur when the organizations go through a re-structuring or re-design. Typically this occurs every 2-3 years. Cost, feature sets and ease of implementation will factor into staying with Ektron. Other factors are the company health, support structure and direct relationship.

Usability principles have been a part of modern web application development for some time now. Ektron lags behind in this area. It's not that the back end is terrible, but to me it does not reflect commitment, expertise, and a systematic approach to usability in Ektron's development process. There are too many UI idiosyncrasies and inconsistencies for my liking.

The support provided by Adobe is excellent. Though the knowledge base, forums, blogs and online chat questions most all answers can be found. In the event that you are unable to find an answer or you have a unique situation simply post a question to the forums. These forums are regularly monitored by Adobe and its users.

Alternatives Considered

Adobe Business Catalyst (Discontinued)

Adobe Business Catalyst is our favorite web content management system - it has everything built in and, being in the cloud, never needs manual updating like the open source stuff out there. It's contact database isn't as robust as SalesForce or Sugar, but it works and is convenient. The email marketing capability is "light" but does the job and saves our clients $50-$100 per month if they don't email more than 1,000 people per month and, even if they do, it still costs less.

Ektron (Discontinued)

Ektron fares well against each of these from a CMS perspective and distinguishes itself from the add-ons provided such as experience hub connectors, mobile support and eSync. Pricing is substantially different from the open source based products but lower than Sitecore and Adobe CQ. Adobe CQ is the leading WCM in this world especially with their full marketing cloud offering and integration with other products. Ektron has done a good job recognizing that marketing departments are driving the spend and tailoring their product and features sets to support those internal organization stakeholders. In addition from an IT perspective shifting to support not only on-premise but cloud based environments is matching the trend especially for public facing websites.

  • After almost a decade of using Ektron, the organization is moving away from Ektron to Webhook. They are moving away from distributed content management for a system that allows for greater design and less cost.
