Pros

  • Blogs are one of the best ways to generate new content and gain organic rankings with search engines. Business Catalyst's built in blog engine allows users to have their blog resident on their website instead of having to maintain to two sites. This helps to keep the website fresh and builds SEO.
  • Business Catalyst provides a comprehensive Email Marketing module. Users can create and schedule email series. BC also allows for other modules to be placed within the email so that as you update content on your website you are also populating your email newsletter.
  • Although not a feature of Business Catalyst itself, there is a great community of BC partners that support one another. The community shares their knowledge and successes as well as their trials and tribulations. The community happily welcomes new partners without condition or judgement. Through the knowledge shared partners can learn about the platform itself, site building in general, tips on working with clients and how to build their own business.
  • Business Catalyst support is excellent. Being able to chat with support in real time while you are talking a client through a problem is a great asset.
  • The Web Apps module is a powerful feature which allows users to add content to the site while locking in the design. Users simply fill out a form and the information is added to the site perfectly formatted.
  • The ability to replicate sites allows partners to reproduce a successful site thereby reducing build time and increasing productivity and profits.

  • Ektron CMS is reliable and performs well. Outages are extremely rare, and the site is fast.
  • The Ektron CMS content editor is easy to use, and updates can be made by non-technical people. The Ektron site synchronization process allows us to automatically publish updates every 30 minutes. This is very important to the resort's marketing efforts during the busy ski season.
  • This is straight from the marketing department: 'Ektron CMS is user friendly for non-technical people, and it allows us to be more effective in our marketing efforts.

Cons

  • The learning curve can be steep.
  • There is no access to the server side programming so some functionality needs a work around or cannot be accomplished.
  • It is more expensive for users than many of the other website options.
Pauline Kraus profile photo
  • Some users feel the management interface (Workarea) feels a little dated or confusing with a typical Windows-like folder tree on the left and a right pane that changes based on the section of the Workarea you are in. Visual cues for buttons and components are not always obvious.
  • While the interface enables you to structure the site and add content with faster and easier setup than some other competing products on the market, as with many the competition, the implementation is only as good as the administrator configures it, and over the years I have found this to be one of the biggest complaints and problems with the system.
  • The CMS has many features packed in for marketers, developers, administrators, and users, and it has a great deal of potential to be a powerful system because of them. But many of them feel half-baked into the system more to serve as keywords for a sales pitch or a checklist as opposed to being a solid and usable addition to the system. That's not to say that many of these features are not usable, but they are not as usable or great as they could be. For example, the eCommerce component tends to feel clunky or confusing for users managing products in it. The intranet components, like activity boards or messaging, are difficult to manage in the Workarea because of the interface and lack of access to features that exist and are otherwise hidden from the Workarea or are available only through a front-end widget.
  • The API can be very powerful, and I find most of the time I leverage that to build custom components and controls, but the documentation, though much better now than it has been in past years, is still struggling to provide the level of detail to the various methods and libraries available through the product. This is one area where some of the competition outshines. With someone who has many years of professional experience with the product this is not as big an issue as the API is fairly easy to remember, but for new developers this can be a challenge.
  • Support used to be more of a hit-or-miss roller-coaster ride, and while it has improved in the past years, it's still bumpy for some people. The positive side of this is they have a solid group of community users that are willing to help answer questions and provide samples or demo code where they can to enable new and existing users and developers.
  • While the community is very helpful and willing through various social spheres, like Stack Overflow, Twitter, and Ektron's Developer Forums, Ektron's own Developer Forums are a bit rough to use, making that piece more challenging than it should be. As mentioned, however, they have very helpful and active community members that patrol, and a few internal users that are fairly "hell-bent" on making sure that questions are seen by anyone who might be able to assist. I always recommend Tweeting about something after posting it, for optimal exposure.
  • Ektron's support for MVC is probably it's biggest, obvious weakness currently. While the competition has moved on to solid support for MVC, Ektron's strength is still with Webforms. The three-tier architecture Ektron has built provides a similar approach, but it still cannot compete with true MVC support. If your organization is dedicated to an MVC implementation, a different solution might suit you better.

We think of Ektron as an investment and just like any investment, the longer you have it, the more ROI you receive (hopefully). We have been using Ektron since the CMS 300 days and have successfully upgraded to every version of the product since. Our content team is trained and comfortable with the product and we don't have any ambitions to change anytime soon.

As both a manager of CMS content as well as a designer, I find the CMS to be intuitive and easy to understand. (They also have great documentation and customer support if you need it.)

Between the platform's functionality and Ektron's technical support, I use the CMS with confidence on a daily basis.

The support provided by Adobe is excellent. Though the knowledge base, forums, blogs and online chat questions most all answers can be found. In the event that you are unable to find an answer or you have a unique situation simply post a question to the forums. These forums are regularly monitored by Adobe and its users.

Ektron is one of the best solution for .Net platform. Over the years have improved the performance issues that the previous versions had. My only complain is right now you can't do Page builder pages if you choose to have a MVC architecture

Alternatives Considered

We didn't really used many products before deciding to use Business Catalyst. When we started we developed sites using an old product (GoLive) and then created a few sites in WordPress. We didn't like that fact that WordPress needed an add-on every time we wanted additional functionality and trying keep on top of updates was distracting.Adobe's Business Catalyst gave us an all in one system to replace the multiple products clients required to run their online businesses. We also didn't have to remember which sites had what add-ons updated...or not. Business Catalyst is SaaS which allows us to always have the latest updates and functionality ready at our fingertips.

Ektron is one of the leaders in the industry and often is compared to EPiServer and Sitecore CMS platforms. We selected Ektron due to our requirements to maintain the ASP.Net environmental stack and the requirement to have a sanitized (non public) staging / authoring environment. Ektron and its eSync product have allowed us to accomplish both of these goals with very little effort.

Return on Investment

  • Complete reporting connecting dollars spent on marketing to dollars earned as revenue
  • Faster turn-around on ideas into market-ready content
  • Better service to clients through greater usability in account management

  • Timely content generation - Prior to implementation of the Ektron product the our main web site and the school sites varied in terms of up to date and relevant information. This stemmed from the fact that no consistent platform existed for users to generate content on.
  • Consistency - While not perfect we were able to provide consistency via the template model so that our sites were generally following the same look and feel guidelines as all the other sites.
  • Improved support - The product allowed us to provide better support given that all our users were on the same platform now. This also allowed us to develop modules everyone could take advantage of at the same time and very quickly.
