The service provision is good the accounts customer service is poor so I would struggle to give BC a better than average review, if only they could offer customers a better accounts service then the value would be much higher.

  • Ektron CMS is reliable and performs well. Outages are extremely rare, and the site is fast.
  • The Ektron CMS content editor is easy to use, and updates can be made by non-technical people. The Ektron site synchronization process allows us to automatically publish updates every 30 minutes. This is very important to the resort's marketing efforts during the busy ski season.
  • This is straight from the marketing department: 'Ektron CMS is user friendly for non-technical people, and it allows us to be more effective in our marketing efforts.

Cons

  • If a customer has a query they don't listen to the customer they just look at ways to hide behind BC company policy. In the UK if a customer changes a subscription plan by law they have a 14 day cooling off period. BC doesn't allow a plan to be changed once it’s been upgraded even if this is within a 24 hour period. I understand that BC having to comply with international law is not going to happen and that's not what a customer would expect. But what I do expect is for their accounts department to actually consider and review a customer’s requests or simple error's made without just quoting company policy.
  • In my case, I noticed our website was being tagged as NOT SECURE in Google Chrome Browser. I knew BC didn't offer SSL when I tried it a few years back but that I would check to see if they added that service. Sure enough, they added SSL certificates last summer, that’s was great news. So I read that SSL only came with the Platinum Service Plan and upgraded at a cost of $264.13 . Then a few minutes later I noticed that actually, I could have purchased the SSL on my current Web commerce plan (Gold Plan) for just $80. Within 24 hours I requested the upgrade be canceled and to just add SSL to my current plan. After all, we didn’t need a Platinum plan for our needs we only needed the SSL certification. The accounting department said this was not allowed or possible due to their cancellation policy of NO REFUNDS. They even suggested I could change back to GOLD service in the summer and then pay another $80 to add the SSL that would be lost. This is not the service I would expect. In strict comparison and contrast to our domain is hosted with GoDaddy and they will allow customers to change service policy at any time and they always Pro Rata any billing need meaning the customer is never charged for a service they don't want at that time.
  • When a customer upgrades a service it should be upgraded for 12 months from the upgrade date. The old service remaining credit should be deducted from the new service subscription and BC should clearly display the upgrade price for the next 12 months. The customer should be given the opportunity to review the service cancellation policy before checking a check-box and then processing the order.
  • BC fail to communicate important service upgrades such as SSL certification added last year. Someone could have called me on that emails get lost these days so what’s wrong with a plan good old fashioned phone call
  • BC has changed their service plan names, that's not a problem in itself providing its communicated to the customer and that it is 100% adopted across all media platforms, user portal and billing etc. The WebCommerce Plan is also the Gold Plan and I was not aware of that so found it very confusing.
  • When upgrading a service plan BC should provide pop up windows to highlight the company cancellation policy which is good standard practice

  • Ektron's user interface could use a complete overhaul, beginning with the odd logical separation between "Library" items and "Content." From an end-user perspective these distinctions are completely irrelevant and only serve to confuse everyone.
  • The way Ektron reads html in the code editor is unfathomable. White space is dealt with in a completely unconventional and error prone way and the text editor often inserts immense amounts of unnecessary markup that often causes problems and bugs.
  • Ektron contains so many bugs its almost impossible to list them all. As the main editor of the website, my standard answer to any standard functionality requests is "no" because Ektron charges inordinate sums of money for those functions and even if we do custom manage our own solution, it would likely cause the entire system to crash.
  • Ektron is very very slow.
  • Ektron requires a seperate module for mobile/web-friendly websites. You can't just code it yourself. You have to buy their's.

As a partner and system integrator, we will continue to recommend that our customers renew their use of the Ektron CMS product. I would recommend that any customer/organization that has invested in software/services to create a CMS website remain on that platform for a minimum of 3 years so that the can effectively monitor/evaluate their ROI, the CMS product road-map; and, as they mature with their use of the CMS overtime, then begin looking to see what additional features that they need (and why). Switching to a new CMS product is not one to be taken lightly; but, typically, if it's going to be done, it tends to be at times when (1) a redesign is needed (2) your hosting contract is up for renewal.

Overall it is a "plug and play" interface. The majority of the work is done in other software interfaces. Managing billing, user roles and custom reports are all that you need to manage in the actual BC user interface. For my business this is an incredible benefit as I have to leave my preferred software less.

As both a manager of CMS content as well as a designer, I find the CMS to be intuitive and easy to understand. (They also have great documentation and customer support if you need it.)

Between the platform's functionality and Ektron's technical support, I use the CMS with confidence on a daily basis.

In the event that you are unable to find an answer or you have a unique situation simply post a question to the forums. These forums are regularly monitored by Adobe and its users.

Ektron is one of the best solution for .Net platform. Over the years have improved the performance issues that the previous versions had. My only complain is right now you can't do Page builder pages if you choose to have a MVC architecture

Alternatives Considered

We didn't really used many products before deciding to use Business Catalyst. When we started we developed sites using an old product (GoLive) and then created a few sites in WordPress. We didn't like that fact that WordPress needed an add-on every time we wanted additional functionality and trying keep on top of updates was distracting.Adobe's Business Catalyst gave us an all in one system to replace the multiple products clients required to run their online businesses. We also didn't have to remember which sites had what add-ons updated...or not. Business Catalyst is SaaS which allows us to always have the latest updates and functionality ready at our fingertips.

Typically when talking about the Ektron product from a selection perspective, we also compare them against Sitecore and EPiServer as they are the other 2 primary .NET platforms with similar ratings. We closely follow the Gartner Magic Quadrant and Forrester Wave reports that come out annually; and, these 3 products are traditional packed closely in the Leaders and Visionaries categories.
