The key question to a client would be to ask if they want to be able to do their own web site site maintenance without the need of software. The added benefit of the CMS is that it also comes with the CRM, e-Mail campaign capabilities, reporting and much more.

Marketo

Marketo is an amazing option for large companies or a company looking for a customizable marketing automation platform that can grow with their company. I'd recommend having a strong plan in place for how you plan to use Marketo before implementing, but you can always start with a simple implementation and build out the complexity of your system as your marketing strategy changes. I would not recommend Marketo for anyone that does not have a strong tech presence in their marketing department.

Pros

  • It's easy for my design team to turn Adobe InDesign or Photoshop files into HTML and CSS
  • It's easy for my production team to build out the whole site in terms of content and on-site search engine optimization (SEO)
  • It's easy for our clients to log in, add new pages, update the navigation, blog, and add contact forms
  • Some clients really like the email marketing capability, especially as this functionality usually doesn't cost them anything extra
  • Our e-commerce clients really like how easy it is to set up and maintain

  • Engagement Programs - the ability to set up very complex, granular email nurture programs allows you to target people with incredibly personalized experiences at scale.
  • Lead management process - you can completely customize your lead stages to your sales cycle, set up your own revenue cycle to create unique analytics based on your company, and automate sales alerts and recycling to marketing based on your own criteria.
  • User friendly templates - The modules in Marketo email templates make putting together beautiful HTML emails a breeze.

Cons

  • Adding unique page titles and meta descriptions to the blog has been challenging especially relating to tags and the "pages" that are automatically generated for them - we'd like this to be a lot easier
  • In-context editing is kind of cool but is really slow loading and it's difficult for my design team to set this up properly
  • You cannot redirect certain pages that no longer exist, so our clients get dinged in Google Webmaster Tools for pages no longer there - e.g. database-created pages with question marks in the name, .apsx pages and some other funky file types
  • When uploading contacts from an email list, we have to contact Adobe directly to get them to manually "verify" each contact so we can email them - we've already gotten permission from them and don't want to have to email them just to get there permission again to satisfy Adobe
  • When editing a page, it sometimes loses its formatting after saving in the viewer - the changes are still there, it just doesn't display properly. This used to happen on every save and now happens intermittently

  • The email builder is just not good. They've made some improvements, specifically around pre-built templates and making them modular, but, it's still weak. So many other SMB platforms have drag n drop builders. Marketo needs to catch up in this area.
  • The landing page builder is also lacking. Creating a simple landing page template necessitates hiring a developer or using a pre-built template. I just think a platform of Marketo's level should be more drag n drop.
  • Visualizing nurturing programs or other automation is tough. It works for me, but I speak to a lot of people who are frustrated by this. They need to find a way to clearly create logic paths that can be visualized in a connected fashion.

There are times when it is slightly slow for us, where we sit on a screen waiting for it to load. This could be our internet since we have had the same issue occasionally with other systems, but it is enough to make you crazy.

On multiple occasions we've had Marketo support (technical and license based) issues. Technical issues were minor and resolved within a day. License based issues (even things encouraged by Marketo for partners, like provisioning another license) took WEEKS. They actually took so long to respond that the client we were working with withdrew from the contract because they were no longer convinced Marketo was capable of supporting their business. As an agency trying to sell the software, you can only explain away so much before they just made us look silly.

I had never used Marketo prior to taking this job so online training was my starting point. I was able to follow along, it was interesting and quickly and efficiently taught me what I needed to know without a lot of fluff. It was far from boring and really helped me get my hands dirty with Marketo.

Alternatives Considered

More reliable; more integrated tools

Marketo is in a different class than Pardot. It's much more customizable and doesn't limit what you can automate from like Pardot. The integration with Salesforce is much better. HubSpot is an excellent product. I personally lean Marketo, but it may be out of a comfort level. I have nothing negative to say about HubSpot.

Return on Investment

  • As someone who uses it on behalf of other clients, our ROI with BC is definitely positive. We needed a mid-range CMS without huge licensing costs to satisfy mid-range clients who have some dynamic needs but doesn't need the expense or liability of enterprise level products. Without it we would have lost possible customers or taken bigger hits on projects because of the costs involved with satisfying their mid-level needs
  • Our clients are all usually very positive about the BC platform and are able to use it themselves which lessens our Support time/cost.
  • To use the Web App element,. which we do on almost every site, you need to pay for the highest plan. This brings along with it many features most of our clients would never use. A more basic plan with that Web App capability would be a big improvement on our costs.

  • Lead velocity improvements, faster lead conversion.
  • Well orchestrated, predictable, repeatable campaigns.
  • Increased employee efficiency as employees found it easier to understand and confident to make changes.
  • Better funnel reporting.
