Adobe Business Catalyst

Adobe Business Catalyst is an absolute rock-star for companies that want an all in one solution, who have limited budgets and/or little technical expertise. It will scale well and can grow with your company. It is more complex and more flexible than something like Wix, where your options are heavily limited, but less open than WordPress where you can use plug-ins and custom code to rebuild how anything works. So it is a nice area in the middle.Adobe Business Catalyst would probably not be a great solution for companies who want absolute control over their website and everything in it and have highly experienced technical resources to build out whatever they need since not every area of the website or server can be modified.

SDL Tridion Sites

I think it is really well suited for users who have multiple sites that need to inherit from a parent site, and want easy mass publishing options with the opportunity to also localize/personalize content to a lower level site.

Pros

  • Analytics: I am able to see on multiple levels traffic, clicks, and most importantly search terms for improving SEO. The reports are easy to generate as well as read, especially for small inexperienced business owners.
  • Marketing: When using the BC platform businesses are able to link up easily with Adobe Marketing to automatically send out emails and newsletters. Its a very smooth and painless process.
  • Online Editing: This is probably the best part of BC. Once a design is approved and launched on the platform, my clients do not have to contact me for small content updates. This frees me up as a small business owner to concentrate on design, new clients, and larger projects for existing clients.

  • Tridion has a blueprint (hierarchy) where you can inherit items from a higher structured website or publication
  • Tridion has version control built-in to the application so you don't need to use a separate SVN
  • You can write custom plugins or extensions such as one to minify all JS and CSS files automatically

Cons

  • It is SaaS, so the initial savings can seem costly if the site owner wants to redesign. It is still less costly than having a professional enterprise site built for you, but you will be limited by your budget.
  • It has been a while since I used it, but custom pages for businesses on Facebook was something that needed to be built by a developer and implemented.

  • Documentation is very weak. SDL makes it impossible to learn without spending a fortune on training. Additional resources are extremely limited.
  • Publishing can be very slow.
  • Very few Tridion developers are available who aren't consulting or working for SDL.

Likelihood to Renew

Actually with Business Catalyst there is no renewal; once you are a partner, you are a partner for as long as you like. It is an investment in your business not simply a product you purchase...and as an investment in partnership with Adobe, both are committed to each other's success.

The editor user interface is very user friendly and in-site editing makes simple updates fast and easy. The extensibility of Tridion is a big plus and the ability to add our own options into the default Tridion interface helps us integrate with external systems. Finally, the user permissions and security system helps us deploy it within our large organization.

The support provided by Adobe is excellent. Though the knowledge base, forums, blogs and online chat questions most all answers can be found. In the event that you are unable to find an answer or you have a unique situation simply post a question to the forums. These forums are regularly monitored by Adobe and its users.

Alternatives Considered

Adobe Business Catalyst is our favorite web content management system - it has everything built in and, being in the cloud, never needs manual updating like the open source stuff out there. It's contact database isn't as robust as SalesForce or Sugar, but it works and is convenient. The email marketing capability is "light" but does the job and saves our clients $50-$100 per month if they don't email more than 1,000 people per month and, even if they do, it still costs less.

Adobe does a great job in managing sites. Its user interface for authors is intuitive and leaps and bounds better than SDL Tridions new 2013 UI. The ease of install and management makes Adobe CQ a much better product. However, Adobe CQ (AEM) has limitations. It cannot scale as well as SDL Tridion does when managing content in the MM of pages. Also, it forces you to use the CQ UI. If you want to create different experiences and leverage code, it becomes difficult, but still do able. In general, i would recommend Adobe CQ over SDL Tridion for almost all companies but the large multi-brand companies.

Return on Investment

  • Has allowed us to develop websites about 25-50% faster when compared with WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, Umbraco, Modx, Miva, etc.
  • Has eliminated the need to manually updated the content management system, which is the main weakness of WordPress
  • Has become our default web content management system, which has led to website development driving growth for our business in addition to our strategic marketing consulting and research services

  • SDL Tridion has a positive impact as it was used for a multi-brand company. The leverage model saved lots of money in managing code and content. People were not spending time recreating code and content.
