Adobe Business Catalyst

Business Catalyst is suited for most web development scenarios. May suggest other options if running a very large ecommerce store, or if they need very specific needs regarding custom coding on a website

Sitecore

If you have a small to medium size business and moderate consumer traffic on the sites (not like a million hits per day), then you can just go ahead and start using Sitecore with all features, with a small developer base. This saves a lot of costs as you don't need to depend on any third party for analytics, personalization or A/B testing etc. But, if you are looking for a solution for an enterprise, a proper assessment needs to be done on the team structure and [you need to] establish processes to better manage the Sitecore platform

Pros

  • The Web Apps element of Business Catalyst is unique among hosted CMS systems. It helps us solve unique challenges without involving heavy-duty programmers.
  • As a Hosted CMS, it has a lot of great features without a ton of cost or liability being taken on which is important to us.
  • BC has a growing developer community and has made significant upgrades over the past few years, which don't end up costing us more, and would be very expensive or time consuming in a traditional CMS
  • Our client's like that it is from "Adobe" and that it has Dreamweaver integration. This provides them with a level of comfort that helps us sell the project.

  • Content authoring capabilities, which allow authors to update the site content on an as needed basis and publish it anytime.
  • Allows them to host multiple sites on a single Sitecore instance, which avoids extra maintenance and license cost.
  • Webform marketers module allows them to create offline registration pages and integrate them with external integrations through action commands.

Cons

  • It is SaaS, so the initial savings can seem costly if the site owner wants to redesign. It is still less costly than having a professional enterprise site built for you, but you will be limited by your budget.
  • It has been a while since I used it, but custom pages for businesses on Facebook was something that needed to be built by a developer and implemented.

  • You need to have a strong Sitecore certified developer base to manage the Sitecore platform (if you are using all features). It's the same case with others. But, finding a Sitecore certified (costs $$) developer is tough in the market. Now the market is growing (thanks to Sitecore promotional events) and Sitecore is gaining popularity. It may be easy to find such developers in the future. If you want to leverage most out of the Sitecore community you need to be a Sitecore certified developer.
  • Sitecore comes with lots of built-in features and marketplace components. I feel this puts it in a little tricky situation. It gives an opportunity for a normal developer to use some of the free marketplace module, which may or may not be supported in a future version of Sitecore. Which may put the entire platform at risk to upgrade to the latest Sitecore version. You need to have a proper process to control and validate the marketplace components before using them.

Likelihood to Renew

For the types of clients that need all the features Business Catalyst offers, I would not hesitate to renew our use of it. Those types of clients, however, are few and far between. The tech support Adobe offers for Business Catalyst could range from Quite Good to Adequate; it depended on the support personnel

Usability

Overall it is a "plug and play" interface. The majority of the work is done in other software interfaces. Managing billing, user roles and custom reports are all that you need to manage in the actual BC user interface. For my business this is an incredible benefit as I have to leave my preferred software less.

The support provided by Adobe is excellent. Though the knowledge base, forums, blogs and online chat questions most all answers can be found. In the event that you are unable to find an answer or you have a unique situation simply post a question to the forums. These forums are regularly monitored by Adobe and its users.

Make sure you work with a partner that can help you take advantage of the entire platform. Specifically we see a lot of customers not taking advantage of Sitecore DMS and thus missing a huge opportunity. Sitecore is a platform that is meant to be constantly optimized and improved upon.

Alternatives Considered

We prefer Adobe Business Catalyst over WordPress. Adobe Business Catalyst websites are more secure and you don't have to update plug-ins. Saving our clients in cost over time.
Debra Scarpa profile photo
Of all the competitors listed above, Sitecore owned, by far, the best combination of power, easy-of-use, and extensibility. It easily outperformed the other paid-for CMS systems. Its power is especially noticeable in its ability to handle very complex workflows, security permissions, and server setups. Beyond that, it is very extensible, allowing you easily to piggy-back on its out of box power and further customize it to your needs. There are only a few reasons I would not recommend Sitecore over the other CMS systems: cost, if the client requires a non-.Net based system, their needs are not as great so that a slimmer system like WordPress would make more sense.
