The service provision is good the accounts customer service is poor so I would struggle to give BC a better than average review, if only they could offer customers a better accounts service then the value would be much higher.

WooCommerce is well suited for smaller companies looking to start selling their products and services online. We mainly sell apparel using WooCommerce, and the reason why we love it is using the global add-on feature. With this, you can specify size, color, style, etc. for specific product categories. Then when you create those products, all of the options are automatically applied to the product based on the category you put it in.

Cons

  • There is a lot of documentation out there, but much of it is out of date or lacking in detail or specificity.
  • The biggest weakness of BC is its support. While the chat feature is good, it has long hold times and staff that is not knowledgeable about the product. I doubt anyone in support has ever even built a site with Business Catalyst before. They need US support centers with actual designers or developers who would be able actually help. It seems like 50% of our support questions should be easy but end up being escalated as a "not for the development team" or never answered.
  • The Admin UI could be more intuitive and the In-Content Editing is very difficult to actually use in practice with a novice client.

  • WooCommerce's interface looks very similar to what it did years ago. While features may have improved, sometimes finding where those features live to make changes can be a challenge.
  • While I can make larger changes to how my shop page looks, some of the actual product pages are set in stone. It takes knowledge of PHP and coding to make changes to the template or the purchase of WooCommerce's shortcode plugin to get more flexibility. Having some layout options for how the product page looks would be great from non-coders.
  • WooCommerce is still very much geared towards physical products. While it has a few options for digital products, expanding these features would make WooCommerce more competitive against other plugins such as Easy Digital Downloads.

Easy to set up. Easy to use. Very low investment upfront. The investment is basically the cost of hiring someone to build the website, hosting, and any plugins necessary.

I gave it lots of points for being a simple product that instantly gives you a store. Very intuitive and simple for the client to update or implement. Loses LOTS of points when you want to do anything besides just sell stuff (coupons, etc) then it makes you pay big money for the add-ons and makes it difficult and time-intensive to develop your own.

In the event that you are unable to find an answer or you have a unique situation simply post a question to the forums. These forums are regularly monitored by Adobe and its users.

Alternatives Considered

We prefer Adobe Business Catalyst over WordPress. Adobe Business Catalyst websites are more secure and you don't have to update plug-ins. Saving our clients in cost over time.

I haven't used Shopify's WP integration, but I have built a Shopify site through their own platform. I found the CMS of WP to be more straight forward and intuitive, but it may be because I have a lot of WP experience. Shopify's CMS is certainly not a WP clone...In terms of the shop management, Shopify is certainly just as easy to use as WooCommerce, but WP's inherent flexibility makes creating and branding your shop much easier with the combo of Woo and WP than just using Shopify by itself.
