The service provision is good the accounts customer service is poor so I would struggle to give BC a better than average review, if only they could offer customers a better accounts service then the value would be much higher.

WooCommerce

WooCommerce is well suited for smaller companies looking to start selling their products and services online. We mainly sell apparel using WooCommerce, and the reason why we love it is using the global add-on feature. With this, you can specify size, color, style, etc. for specific product categories. Then when you create those products, all of the options are automatically applied to the product based on the category you put it in.

Cons

Adobe Business Catalyst (Discontinued)

  • The Web Forms is very helpful and easy to create. Placing the forms is simple especially when inserting as a module. The problem comes after placement. It is time consuming if there are any edits that need to be made to the form. For example, if you are in the U.S., you typically do not want other countries to show up on a dropdown menu. It would be great if BC would allow you to check the countries (or states) that you want to be active. Also, often times within a web form you may want to include to separate address fields. That is not allowed unless you go back and do custom editing for the forms. "Workarounds" are typically possible but for the designer, anything that adds time to the process also cuts down on profitability.
  • Where we enjoy the ease of creating Photo Galleries, we also don't like the fact that you can style the output like you can within other module templates. For example, many clients would like to offer better descriptions and even style the descriptions. If displaying a photo from a art museum, you may want to give the proper title and that would include italicizing the name of the artwork.
  • One of our biggest pet peeves is the fact that BC only offers the European date style when displaying that dates in the modules. You should be able to check a box on which date style should be shown.
  • On Web Apps, almost everything is fantastic EXCEPT for the ability to sort web app items by date. If I wanted to create a calendar of events based on a web app I want to create, I would want to be able to display those items in chronological order.
  • The Event Module is great except the way it uses a quirky form to process payments and reserve events. It should behave more like an ecommerce solution where the form is easier to fill out, customize, submit and process.

WooCommerce

  • Additional free themes. There seems to be a lack of free thremes that come with WooCommerce alrady built it. There are 3rd parties that have great one however. For now, we recommend sticking with the dedicated WooCommerce theme, Storefront.
  • WooCommerce has a feature that calculates shipping costs automatically. We have found these rates to not always be very accurate and some users often pay more or less than what it actually costs us to ship the product. These can be easily adjusted, however by a few settings changes.
  • I fee like the system gets a bit bogged down on resources due to all the additional free plugins I install to make WooCommerce more powerful. I feel as though many of these features should just come standard in the initial WooCommerce package, since they are usually very important.

Easy to set up. Easy to use. Very low investment upfront. The investment is basically the cost of hiring someone to build the website, hosting, and any plugins necessary.

I gave it lots of points for being a simple product that instantly gives you a store. Very intuitive and simple for the client to update or implement. Loses LOTS of points when you want to do anything besides just sell stuff (coupons, etc) then it makes you pay big money for the add-ons and makes it difficult and time-intensive to develop your own.

I have used Adobe support for many of their products. I find that they are quick to respond and present a wide variety of support platforms from forums to online chat. Depending on the nature of the issue I am usually able to get resolution within 24 to 48 hours. With more complex issues I have never had a problem with Adobe dropping the ball.

Alternatives Considered

Adobe Business Catalyst (Discontinued)

We didn't really used many products before deciding to use Business Catalyst. When we started we developed sites using an old product (GoLive) and then created a few sites in WordPress. We didn't like that fact that WordPress needed an add-on every time we wanted additional functionality and trying keep on top of updates was distracting.Adobe's Business Catalyst gave us an all in one system to replace the multiple products clients required to run their online businesses. We also didn't have to remember which sites had what add-ons updated...or not. Business Catalyst is SaaS which allows us to always have the latest updates and functionality ready at our fingertips.

WooCommerce

WooCommerce sits in a nice sweet spot between hosted e-commerce solutions where you have to give up some control in exchange for easy-of-use (like Shopify, Squarespace) and larger more enterprise solutions that are endlessly customizable but too complex for most merchatns needs (like Magento). I love WooCommerce because I love WordPress. There is a very large community of developers that support the core products and thousands of plugins that can extend the functionality. So if WooCommerce doesn't do exactly what you had hoped, there is a good chance you can find a free or inexpensive plug-in to make it happen
