Adobe Campaign

Adobe Campaign is well suited for enterprise-level marketing communications. It can manage and deploy large volumes of emails very efficiently. Workflows can allow multiple touches, staggered sends, and segmentation to occur all within one delivery if needed. Interactions and reporting can happen in real time or near real time if needed. When integrated with the rest of the Marketing Cloud, Campaign becomes even more powerful as platforms like Analytics and AEM can have functionality brought directly into Campaign for more effective content creation and reporting.

For a large scale, multi-national eCommerce application where a solution needs to be built with heavy customizations, I believe Hybris is the way to go. It provides a great starting point and scales well with proper development practices. Though be prepared to adopt supplementary solutions for things such as CMS and/or product search/indexing to achieve the most out of this product. Future releases of Hybris are improving on these two things though so it could be the case that these have been updated to leading industry standards, be sure to inquire appropriately

Pros

  • The workflow interface is good. You have the ability to design campaigns on a very simple or very complex level depending on what you are trying to achieve.
  • The UI is getting better. Adobe is making Campaign easier to navigate and more like its other solutions across the Adobe Marketing Cloud.
  • When paired with other solutions in the Adobe Marketing Cloud such as Analytics and Target, marketers have access to additional tools that otherwise they would have to look elsewhere for.

  • New technologies. One of the reasons that I like the platform is that it's in constant improvement. It feels like some of the competitors are bloated and slow to adopt new features in comparison.
  • Wide range of features. Many out of the box features for common commerce paradigms.
  • Scaleability. We have had no issues of scalability even at what we feel are high volumes of traffic.

Cons

  • I wish it was more straightforward, I have trouble syncing it with my google drive and my Adobe Cloud.
  • I wish there was a better tutorial that really elaborates on all the unique tools so that users don't miss out on any major features - it's also hard to teach someone else the program, so this would be useful for new employees.
  • I wish they would bring back the one-time fee they used to over vs. the monthly subscription - especially when you need it outside of work or it's not available at your job.

  • Though there is an online community presence for support, it is not as strong as other platforms I have used.
  • The Content Management System though functional is a bit dated and can be difficult for non technical business owners to manage. Other industry leading CMS solutions are generally used in conjunction with Hybris in my experience.
  • Product indexing and search also is not up to industry leaders, used another product in conjunction with hybris to accomplish this business need.

We feel that Neolane really adds value to our organization and has allowed marketing to progress - storing databases more efficiently, sharing campaigns across the world, pushing leads directly into our CRM system. We are very invested in the tool since we took a good bit of time to customize it, so I anticipate we will renew our use.

Figuring out the CMS tools took some time. Supporting documentation is sparse.I also found the tools to be slow at times, making simple template edits an arduous process.

I would say that generally the knowledge of the support team we work with is good, great even.I can't say that they seem to be very interested or involved in trying to make the product work best for us.They do what needs to be done, and they do it well - but not really going the extra mile.

I give this an 8 instead of a 10 because in hindsight, while I am extremely happy with the platform and the things I've learned through my exposure to it, I also see so many areas for improvement in the outcome of my efforts. My advice to front end developers working with Hybris and/or the Java stack for the first time, is to not be intimidated by it. Question everything. Trust your intuition. Do not be afraid to refactor or completely replace something that appears integral to the platform if you see a clear benefit to doing so. It's much less far reaching than you think and the core system will not come crumbling to its knees if you make broad sweeping alterations. In fact, the energy you will expend to retool your site with a new framework will grow in tandem with the amount of time you spend hesitating, and at some point may become critical enough to force your hand while simultaneously becoming risky enough to destabilize your entire project delivery. If you don't like JQuery UI, punt it. If you don't care for the Blueprint CSS framework, burn it down. Making the strategic decision to adopt the toolset that best fits your organization from the very beginning will pay off in spades.

Alternatives Considered

We used to use Experian, or CheetahMail as it's referred to. Overall with the cost of deployment and training there is not really a way of going back. Given the chance, we probably would have saved ourselves the cost and would have stuck with an SAAS agreement with either Experian or an equivalent.That is not to say that Adobe's Neolane is a bad product, in fact it's a fairly good product. However it needs a lot of polishing to become the all round pack it should be.

In my opinion, hybris has a better modular architecture, documentation, community support and there is an eCommerce as a Service solution (YaaS).

Return on Investment

  • We lowered our overall cost of routing emails, we are now using our own servers with a flat-fee cost for the connection. However against substantial initial investment - cost of deployment and training of staff.
  • Our turnover in email increased by a bit, due to the fact we can route more - and a bit better targeted
  • Employment efficiency went down. Unlike Experian we have now full time 2 people providing technical support. The Client software is slower than the Experian web interface and overall action takes more time. However this is on the shoot-per shoot basis. For the more permanent campaigns the customizability of Neolane is absolutely better (read good)

  • Hybris allows you to increase your sales, pay with different promo content and conversion of your business.
  • Requires initial investments. [Might] not be very suitable for small business.
