Smaller less technically staffed companies should avoid it. For mid-size companies with a serious need for a email solution, it might be worth considering if the staff involved in using the product isn't afraid of technically looking stuff. The staff that runs the servers (if it's on-premises deployment) needs to be fairly technical, and willing to dig into issues and errors that will arise.

Marketo

Marketo is well-suited for a medium to a large enterprise that has people devoted to getting it set up and running. You have to really WANT to get it going, otherwise, you will not get great value out of the product. Once you get it up and running, it's a great product with lots of resources on the web for use. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a full marketing automation suite.

  • Overall, the program has great features and is very flexible and easy to manage.
  • Excellent advanced email delivery that also easily integrates well with social and mobile. Also easily allows you to create custom emails for customers.
  • There are multiple ways to achieve the same results - so if one tool doesn't work, you aren't stuck and have other options of getting the same end result.

  • Email nurture - the ability to build specific awareness/engagement streams and managing where people sit through transition rules means you can take your leads on a journey, providing the right content at the right time.
  • Segmentation - the ability to segment your database depending on whatever criteria you like means that you can quickly build the desired audience for a specific campaign. Segments are also updated in real time.
  • Attribution - understanding which channels or specific programs perform highly in terms of pipeline attribution is really powerful.

Cons

  • It is not for SME, you must be an advanced marketer for the investment to pay off.
  • In Sweden consultants are hard to come by.
  • When setting end dates you must remember that the end-time is 00:00, so if you want your campaing to end midnight May 21st you have to change the end-time to 23:59 or set the end date one day later (i.e. May 22nd).

Pulling large lists takes more time than I think it should.. .sometimes loading emails, images, and other screens can take a decent amount of time

I would say that generally the knowledge of the support team we work with is good, great even.I can't say that they seem to be very interested or involved in trying to make the product work best for us.They do what needs to be done, and they do it well - but not really going the extra mile.

Alternatives Considered

Look, Adobe Campaign is the best program to use for your online media marketing. Adobe understands what online marketers and social media strategists need, and deliver the proper tools necessary for them to be successful. I swear by Adobe, they've earned my trust and I will continue to use their programs throughout my career. Everything else is just...noise. Until I find a program with better customer service than Adobe, I will always be a fanboy.

As we have grown, Marketo has grown with us. We started with simple single email campaigns and are now doing complex campaigns with multiple emails and tracks that we send a contact to if they take certain actions within our emails. We also have a complex integration with several systems and have the visibility into our marketing activities throughout our organization.
