Adobe Campaign

Adobe Campaign is well suited for enterprise-level marketing communications. It can manage and deploy large volumes of emails very efficiently. Workflows can allow multiple touches, staggered sends, and segmentation to occur all within one delivery if needed. Interactions and reporting can happen in real time or near real time if needed. When integrated with the rest of the Marketing Cloud, Campaign becomes even more powerful as platforms like Analytics and AEM can have functionality brought directly into Campaign for more effective content creation and reporting.

Sitecore

Sitecore really isn't suited to smaller companies as it is relatively expensive and not all of the features are easily used without proper support and training, at some cost. It is however, very powerful and flexible - in fact it's flexibility is it's strength - as long as you can consume the development overhead that comes with it. I'm glad we're using it, although if you don't do things "right" then features that should be simple to utilise can be tricky. It's best suited to a traditional webshop or content site, our booking path is dependent upon previous decisions made, which definitely complicates things a lot.

Pros

  • It helps simplify our email marketing fundraising efforts, helping to build detailed and functional email campaigns.
  • It consolidates our performance data and analyzes all of our campaigns
  • It has great personalization tools to create custom and creative campaigns

  • Personalisation of advertising banners based upon knowledge of the customer, like location or previous searches enables us to target customers with products and offers that they are more likely to engage with, which has been done to good effect.
  • The use of Sitecore for content management enables the business and design team to perform changes to things, like images, content and page structure, which would otherwise have required a code release, which is costly in terms of man power.
  • The A/B testing in Sitecore is good because it allows us to statistically verify minor changes to the site - like advert changes or component ordering on the page - as to whether or not they positively impact conversion.

Cons

  • I wish it was more straightforward, I have trouble syncing it with my google drive and my Adobe Cloud.
  • I wish there was a better tutorial that really elaborates on all the unique tools so that users don't miss out on any major features - it's also hard to teach someone else the program, so this would be useful for new employees.
  • I wish they would bring back the one-time fee they used to over vs. the monthly subscription - especially when you need it outside of work or it's not available at your job.

  • Sitecore is complicated. Software developers need (costly) training to get the most value out of it and business users do not find it intuitive to use. Concepts like the content tree can be difficult for the business users to grasp.
  • Despite everything being possible in Sitecore, virtually nothing comes out of the box - you need to develop every component and do so within a defined process and framework, which can be a fairly big development overhead.

I would say that generally the knowledge of the support team we work with is good, great even.I can't say that they seem to be very interested or involved in trying to make the product work best for us.They do what needs to be done, and they do it well - but not really going the extra mile.

Make sure you work with a partner that can help you take advantage of the entire platform. Specifically we see a lot of customers not taking advantage of Sitecore DMS and thus missing a huge opportunity. Sitecore is a platform that is meant to be constantly optimized and improved upon.

Alternatives Considered

Because it's pricey, I've played around with cheaper alternatives when I didn't have access to it through work, such as Infusionsoft, ONTRAPORT & Pardot Marketing Automation. I found that all of them lacked the consistency and tools I needed to create strong results and as constantly comparing it to Adobe Campaign. The information was slightly off also and not as accurate.

The decision to select Sitecore was not ultimately mine, but the fact that we were able to leverage in-house Microsoft .Net (C#) experience on a platform that had a library of extensions, but also allowed us to customize and keep private our confidential IP has been a big help. When you see a SharePoint site or a Drupal site you can usually tell "oh this is a MS SharePoint site", but with Sitecore the ability to customize and have different views even different components based on device type makes Sitecore a clear winner.

Return on Investment

  • It's driven up our sales/clicks 100%. Now that we're able to target our audience and what drives them, we're able to determine what the best course of action is with our online marketing campaigns.
  • I really wouldn't say there's much of a negative connotation, except for the fact that everything is updated via Adobe Cloud, so it can get kind of pricey if you're a smaller agency – either yearly subscription, or a monthly fee.

  • I was initially one of the biggest opponents to switch from our homemade CMS to Sitecore. As you can see from my review I am a big fan of it now. While the initial investment was significant, no one ever brings up switching to something else. We all believe this is the best platform for our needs.
  • Because of the rule-based display logic based on previous user interactions our website users are able to experience a site that is uniquely geared to them in a way we had never thought possible.
