Adobe Captivate

Captivate is a great tool for creating content from scratch intended for use in responsive design. This is one of my go-to tools when this particular scenario exists. Captivate's responsive design option and the wide range of tools make the application an amazing option for mobile design. Despite having a PowerPoint import and conversion option, Captivate is NOT the tool to use when starting with content created in PowerPoint. Slides are imported as a single image, removing animations and any ability to edit the content.

Books 24x7

Books 24x7 is well suited for a corporate environment where employees need to have access to a variety of books on many topics. It is not so friendly for someone who is traveling because they have to be online, logged into the company network in order to read the books they have put on their shelf. One time when it is most convenient to read is on an airplane, but this is not an option in the current setup of Books 24x7.

Pros

  • Adobe Captivate is a full-featured authoring tool, offering users a wide range of interactive and educational tools. Adobe Pro applications excel at providing you most of the options that you want and more than you need.
  • Captivate offers live authoring in responsive design. This feature is essential as we look to develop more content for use across mobile devices.
  • Captivate integrates seamlessly with the other Adobe Creative Suite tools that we use. We combine PhotoShop, Acrobat, and Captivate to create some amazing learning tools.

  • Books 24x7 is very good at keeping their content up to date, offering new selections on a regular basis.
  • The books are easy to search for by topic and can be sorted and stored for future reading in a custom library.
  • The selection of books is very versatile and multi-faceted.

Cons

  • Adobe struggles in its customer support. Knowledgeable Captivate support technicians to teach and troubleshoot would elevate this powerful tool.
  • As mobile learning journeys away from Flash, developing strictly in HTML5 is a becoming a must. Captivate has an HTML5 inspector to review your project for potential flash-based issues, but development in HTML5 only is not as intuitive. I waste valuable time and effort making adjustments after the fact.
  • Many of my SMEs (subject mater experts) submit drafts in PowerPoint. Captivate has a PowerPoint import option, but transforms each slide into an image, removing any ability to edit the content after import. The issue alone is enough to drive me to alternate authoring tools. Unfortunately, we don't have the resources to distribute and teach all of our SMEs to use Captivate.

  • The biggest issue I have with Books 24x7 is that you have to be online to read the books. It would be nice if there was a download option where you could read the book in an e-reader app like Kindle or Nook.
  • The portal to log in to Books 24x7 is not easy to navigate. This may be an issue internally with our Information Systems.
  • Having an option to highlight sections of the book as you are reading it would be very helpful.

We are all in with Adobe products as creative tools, but are leaning more and more on Articulate for course development. It is likely that Captivate will continue to be a tool in our belt even if it isn't our immediate go to

Books 24x7 is a useful tool for growth, knowledge sharing, and overall intellectual health within the company. Our company has been very forward thinking in offering this to every employee. As a result, people have been able to grow in areas they may not have previously explored because of the free access to resources they may not have bothered with before they had free access to them.

Usability

Adobe Captivate does take some getting used to. There are features that are much more convoluted than they need to be, but overall it is a great product with a some excellent features. Being in a pretty small market, Adobe Captivate and Articulate Storyline dominate the space. They are not the same software, but allow for eLearning authoring. Each has their benefit and their downside, but, for me, Adobe Captivate edges out Storyline.

Overall, Books 24x7 is relatively easy to use, and has a lot of positives going for it. It has room for improvement, but in its current state or version it is still a useful tool to enhance, encourage, and promote learning across the entire corporation. It has filled a much needed gap in learning and personal development, and is a value add to any organization.

Support

The support team is good in responding and maintaining communication. Sometimes...well...almost always, you will find yourself having to use a 2nd attempt with more details and easier terminology to get the tech to understand the question or situation. These techs should know English 100% and their product 100% to be on a support team for the USA. I do not get the impression this is true.

I also used AnalogX Capture, but this survey would not allow me to enter it as a competitive software as they do not have it in their list. Captivate is the best. Simply put, no one stands up to them. The amount of thought put in to Captivate is beyond that of any other application. Adobe has spent much time making it sync with other Adobe apps and makes it very easy to use together. The ability to include your quizzes right from the software and control the LMS is great. All the capturing tools built in to Captivate make it so much easier to use when you are just starting to learn the product and when you are an advanced professional.

We have used no other products similar to Books 24x7. I am certain that HR probably tested or reviewed several options before settling on this product, but I have no information related to why they decided on Books 24x7.

Return on Investment

  • While using Captivate, our organization has decreased training times from 6 days when done face-to-face, down to 4 days when done via Captivate training modules. The ROI thereby has been established at a yearly rate of ~2 months. In just a 2 month period each year, we are averaging a new employee, which is trained in 4 days rather than 6 days, causing the difference in overhead for 2 days to easily pay for the yearly cost of Captivate.
  • Another positive impact Captivate has had on our company is that it provided us the ability (and idea) to create help videos, where normally in a software you have a question mark (?) to click on for help, a text document would open to the FAQ's or User Manual. In our case, it set us ahead of any competition by creating short videos when the user clicks on the question mark and a few-second-long video would play explaining the item they were clicking on.

  • The product has improved the furthering education aspect of all jobs within in the company by offering access to books both inside and outside the employees job description.
  • Workgroups have be able to read books at the same time while cooperating on a certain initiative, allowing for open conversations in relation to what they are reading.
  • Our company's leadership initiatives have been strengthened due to the free access to leadership related material offered within Books 24x7.
