Adobe Captivate

Captivate is a great tool for creating content from scratch intended for use in responsive design. This is one of my go-to tools when this particular scenario exists. Captivate's responsive design option and the wide range of tools make the application an amazing option for mobile design. Despite having a PowerPoint import and conversion option, Captivate is NOT the tool to use when starting with content created in PowerPoint. Slides are imported as a single image, removing animations and any ability to edit the content.

We have special locations that work differently and I have recommended this to them. Even for locations set up differently, it still applies. Because everything can be personalized to fit the need of the user. These locations have become so adept at it that they have become admins themselves so they can implement their ideas immediately. I have yet to come across a scenario where this is not appropriate

Pros

  • The program really excels at providing central platform for combining different training technologies such as voice recordings and videos.
  • Adobe Captivate can provide different types of training media including mobile applications and HTML 5 files.
  • The program provides a robust set of interactive and multimedia features that can aid in providing a more effective training session

  • The ease of uploading documents or slideshows or videos for new training courses. This is the most important part of training, the content. [It's] Personalized to our company's needs to make us as successful as we can.
  • The ability to track every enrolled person's progress. It has date and time stamps, percentage complete, etc. You can also set deadlines that they must complete by. This is a plus for fast paced companies that need precise updates at all times.
  • The support team for HotSchedules Train is amazing. I speak to a real person every single time. They are in a positive and upbeat mood every single time. They have solved my problem almost every single time. The only time they didn't solve my problem was because it was a function that didn't exist yet. I get a follow up email that summarizes our discussion, in case I did not take proper notes. This team is a serious wealth of information and problem solving.
  • Ease of access. You can access this tool anywhere, anytime, from any piece of technology. In the office we use it on our desktops. In the field they use tablets and cell phones. All processes work.

Cons

  • Adobe Captivate does not allow for great customization overall. For example, you cannot change the default font, causing a lot of wasted time changing the font choice.
  • Creating engaging interactions could be a simpler process.
  • A customizable Quick Access Toolbar would be quite useful.

  • There is a functionality that I thought existed but does not. The ability to copy old training and paste it into a new course. This would help because we personalize training based off location, but the bulk of the training stays the same. To be able to start with a fresh slate with no student stats in the course would be beneficial. Right now you can copy and paste into the same course. I want to be able to start a new course with documents already uploaded and exams already made. Then I could make minor tweaks and push out immediately.
  • I have trouble understanding the organization of where to find courses. I find myself clicking the "content" tab, then the "me" tab, and finally the "training" tab. I would want a little more clarity in those descriptive words.
  • I would want to see some improvement in the ease of getting to the course dashboard. Once the course is made and assigned, that's the most important area that we go to. Right now it's multiple screens to get there. Perhaps if, once the course is made and assigned, the button jumped to the top of the first screen once you hit "manage course" that would be great.
  • I would be interested in seeing a side by side of how courses translate from a desktop view to a tablet or smart phone view. So after (or during) the course being built, showing what it looks like to remote users.
  • The ability to send a reminder text about a course, as opposed to a reminder email. People all communicate in different ways. This would bridge the gap to those that primarily use texting.

There is no doubt in my mind that we will be using Adobe Captivate for years to come. There are so many uses for the software that we are just scratching the surface. The more we use it, the better it gets. This is a great option for anyone looking for an eLearning authoring tool.

Usability

Adobe Captivate does take some getting used to. There are features that are much more convoluted than they need to be, but overall it is a great product with a some excellent features. Being in a pretty small market, Adobe Captivate and Articulate Storyline dominate the space. They are not the same software, but allow for eLearning authoring. Each has their benefit and their downside, but, for me, Adobe Captivate edges out Storyline.

Once you learn how to use the Schoox system and really dive into it, the system is pretty easy to navigate. I will say when I started using this I believe it was fairly new and there was little to no training available. I had to learn to use the system by trail and error. The Schoox courses created to explain what Schoox is has a lot of information that looking back on are unnecessary for a beginner user. It was very confusing to keep all the information straight. I find that the more simple the knowledge to begin with the better. If the training for Schoox was more broken up by the different functions the better. When I am teaching a new manager how to use the system I begin by reviewing every tab across the top one they have logged in. This seems to work very well and it is something not included in the tutorial videos as I recall.

The support team is good in responding and maintaining communication. Sometimes...well...almost always, you will find yourself having to use a 2nd attempt with more details and easier terminology to get the tech to understand the question or situation. These techs should know English 100% and their product 100% to be on a support team for the USA. I do not get the impression this is true.

Alternatives Considered

TutorPro's LiveContent leaves a lot to be desired. It is very difficult to use as an assessment tool. It won't record web-based applications correctly and the results are impossible to analyse. StoryBoard was similar to Adobe Captivate, but the LMS integration left us needing more. Camtasia is a linear recording tool with some add quirks that make longer videos very difficult and time consuming to edit. Camtaisa has some very strong tools, though, for video and audio editing, and we keep it around for those needs.

We reviewed and in some cases tested many other options for employee training. Some worked well for salaried employees but would require too much time to manage hourly employees, some had good platforms but could not easily merge with our current systems. We began using HotSchedules a few years back and it was very well received by managers and employees alike. Rolling out Schoox was very smooth since it uses the same log in credentials as hotschedules. It does not require any employee management from the corporate office, it is all managed in the POS and HotSchedules which we use for scheduling. We have over 1700 employees training on schoox and there is just one person in the corporate office managing the entire system (me). Its that simple

Return on Investment

  • Adobe Captivate has had a positive impact on our learning and employee development initiatives. People are always impressed at how professional our content looks and is received. The tool is definitely worth the investment.
