Adobe Captivate

Adobe Captivate is well suited to creating robust multi-modal lectures of online distribution. It takes longer to create lectures in Captivate than in other programs, so you should plan on crafting and creating a presentation that will be usable more than once. For quick video check-ins or overviews, other tools may be better integrated into the learning management system that are easier to use and produce video with.

Skillport

I think Skillport is definitely good for large organizations that need to train large amounts of people. If an organization is doing a lot of "mandatory" trainings that don't necessarily need to be done in person (i.e. hand washing training, trainings on federal laws, etc) it would be good.

Pros

  • Captivate is good for fine tuning multi-modal presentations. I have a course that has undergone a name change. With Captivate I could edit my current presentations without have to re-record the entire lecture.
  • Captivate offers a large amount of transitions and effects. These helps give online lectures a polished look.
  • Captivate exports to a wide range of video qualities and formats, which makes it easy to get finished lectures into our learning management system.

  • Skillport is good at sending reminders for training and when your training is overdue.
  • Skillport is accessible, and you can view all of your trainings on one page.
  • Skillport is fairly intuitive for the user, which is good because it is utilized across a wide range of abilities.

Cons

  • The learning curve for adding and manipulation effects can be quite steep. If I haven't used Captivate in a while, it takes several minutes to remember how things work.
  • Audio editing could be improved by making it easier to place edit markers without having to pause the play cursor at a given spot.
  • Recording new audio or video to an existing presentation makes my Captivate crash. I've had to record audio in a separate program and import as media. Fixing this bug would be very helpful.

  • I've had issues in the past when I have completed a training, but it doesn't show up that it is completed.
  • I think Skillport could be more visually pleasing.

There is no doubt in my mind that we will be using Adobe Captivate for years to come. There are so many uses for the software that we are just scratching the surface. The more we use it, the better it gets. This is a great option for anyone looking for an eLearning authoring tool.

Usability

Adobe Captivate8.0

Adobe Captivate does take some getting used to. There are features that are much more convoluted than they need to be, but overall it is a great product with a some excellent features. Being in a pretty small market, Adobe Captivate and Articulate Storyline dominate the space. They are not the same software, but allow for eLearning authoring. Each has their benefit and their downside, but, for me, Adobe Captivate edges out Storyline.

Support

The support team is good in responding and maintaining communication. Sometimes...well...almost always, you will find yourself having to use a 2nd attempt with more details and easier terminology to get the tech to understand the question or situation. These techs should know English 100% and their product 100% to be on a support team for the USA. I do not get the impression this is true.

Alternatives Considered

Each software offers different strengths and weaknesses; however, the cost, reliability, and ease of use of Captivate outshines the competition. As a user since the RoboDemo days, I've been continuously impressed with what can be accomplished with Adobe Captivate.

I haven't used any other online training system except for Skillport, and I wasn't the person who selected it. However, our organization usually uses pretty decent technology when it comes to training, and I trust that they felt this was the best choice for our organization versus the alternative options

Return on Investment

  • Helps us easily convert some (as appropriate) live instructor led courses into on-demand eLearnings, which enables to better utilize our in-person classroom time. By stuffing less into our in-person events, our learners have a better experience (course ratings) and retain more (process compliance)

  • I'm not the person who manages the program, but from a user perspective it allows us to be ensured that our coworkers are going to be trained on the things it's essential everyone has some familiarity with.
  • It allows flexibility in changing workplaces and doesn't leave large gaps of time for unstaffed offices (as in person training can do)
  • It allows new employees to view their training schedule so they know what needs to be done.
