Adobe Captivate

Adobe Captivate is well suited for situations where a training department needs to create simple video presentations of software tools. Adobe Captivate is great at capturing the exact user experience, while also controlling the environment enough to develop the training topics correctly and effectively. Adobe Captivate also allows us to assess user learning. We want users to attempt the actions we are training them so they can gain muscle memory. Using Adobe Captivate to capture the clicks of the user's mouse is a great feature.

Skillport

I think Skillport is definitely good for large organizations that need to train large amounts of people. If an organization is doing a lot of "mandatory" trainings that don't necessarily need to be done in person (i.e. hand washing training, trainings on federal laws, etc) it would be good.

Pros

  • Adobe Captivate records screen shots click-by-click. This allows us to control exactly what steps the users see.
  • Adobe Captivate allows voice-over dubbing. This feature lets us narrate the steps people need to take to learn the products we are covering.
  • Adobe Captivate allows closed captioning. This lets us add voice-over narration, but also allows users to turn off the sound and read the instructions. Many users participate in training from a cubicle where sound travels too broadly to listen to the voice narration.

  • Skillport is good at sending reminders for training and when your training is overdue.
  • Skillport is accessible, and you can view all of your trainings on one page.
  • Skillport is fairly intuitive for the user, which is good because it is utilized across a wide range of abilities.

Cons

  • Better support
  • Better tutorials
  • It could use more complex animations

  • I've had issues in the past when I have completed a training, but it doesn't show up that it is completed.
  • I think Skillport could be more visually pleasing.

There is no doubt in my mind that we will be using Adobe Captivate for years to come. There are so many uses for the software that we are just scratching the surface. The more we use it, the better it gets. This is a great option for anyone looking for an eLearning authoring tool.

Adobe Captivate does take some getting used to. There are features that are much more convoluted than they need to be, but overall it is a great product with a some excellent features. Being in a pretty small market, Adobe Captivate and Articulate Storyline dominate the space. They are not the same software, but allow for eLearning authoring. Each has their benefit and their downside, but, for me, Adobe Captivate edges out Storyline.

Every issue I have ever had was handled with care and quite thoroughly. After the initial conversation on the phone, I received frequent emails letting me know what they were working on, and also received follow up phone calls. After I found the resolution, I got one more call to ensure everything was working properly. The follow up was quite surprising.

I haven't used any other online training system except for Skillport, and I wasn't the person who selected it. However, our organization usually uses pretty decent technology when it comes to training, and I trust that they felt this was the best choice for our organization versus the alternative options

Return on Investment

  • Adobe Captivate has upped our game considerably when it comes to creating content for our employees' learning experience. As a result, we can deliver more impactful and relevant content to our employees in the field.

  • I'm not the person who manages the program, but from a user perspective it allows us to be ensured that our coworkers are going to be trained on the things it's essential everyone has some familiarity with.
  • It allows flexibility in changing workplaces and doesn't leave large gaps of time for unstaffed offices (as in person training can do)
  • It allows new employees to view their training schedule so they know what needs to be done.
