Adobe Captivate

Captivate is leading the pack with this software solution. While Adobe has owned it for a few years now, Macromedia had already built an amazing tool. Captivate will provide you solutions for training internal staff as well as customers. It is so much easier to quickly record a short tutorial and send it out to your staff to watch at their own pace, than to host a classroom of people that are all learning at different speeds...the slower bunch taking more time and frustrating the faster bunch. With Captivate, I can create any type of video I want and add music, or background audio, or speech to it along with sound effects. Great solution!

How best to work with the vendor: think of yourself as part of their Quality Improvement team and let them know when you see something that might be improved. They really listen.

Pros

  • The ability to quickly and easily create systems demos with text captions automatically added in.
  • The three-mode approach you can use -- you can record one system simulation and then use it to create a non-interactive demo, a guided user-interactive demo, and/or a non-guided user assessment.
  • The ability to set which area of the screen you want to capture, rather than necessarily being forced to capture your entire screen.
  • The ability to use actions and variables (although, admittedly, I haven't really delved into this in Captivate myself...)
  • The ease of publishing output to an Adobe Connect server.

Cons

  • Although Adobe Captivate is powerful, it is not at all intuitive. Before attending a training on Captivate, we had no idea what we were doing. The learning curve is steep.
  • Captivate's video editing skills could be improved. Other products, such as Camtasia, blow Captivate out of the water in this regard.
  • The audio functionality is odd when integrating with Adobe's Audition program. You can record the tracks in audition and then pull them in or record directly to a slide within Captivate. If you record within Captivate, the audio quality and volume does not match any track brought in from Audition.

There is no doubt in my mind that we will be using Adobe Captivate for years to come. There are so many uses for the software that we are just scratching the surface. The more we use it, the better it gets. This is a great option for anyone looking for an eLearning authoring tool.

I say 9 instead of 10 not because of any lack of confidence in SkyPrep but only because I can't be sure how large or responsive my market -- male-friendly social workers and other helping professionals -- will be to my offerings.

Usability

Adobe Captivate does take some getting used to. There are features that are much more convoluted than they need to be, but overall it is a great product with a some excellent features. Being in a pretty small market, Adobe Captivate and Articulate Storyline dominate the space. They are not the same software, but allow for eLearning authoring. Each has their benefit and their downside, but, for me, Adobe Captivate edges out Storyline.

Support

The support team is good in responding and maintaining communication. Sometimes...well...almost always, you will find yourself having to use a 2nd attempt with more details and easier terminology to get the tech to understand the question or situation. These techs should know English 100% and their product 100% to be on a support team for the USA. I do not get the impression this is true.

Alternatives Considered

Now that I'm familiar with the Adobe Captivate interface and capabilities, I am very happy with it. Given the opportunity to use the other software tools listed (after demoing them too), I elected to stick with Captivate due to its flexibility and comprehensiveness.Camtasia has some good tools as well, but is more suited to screen-recording projects (Captivate can also do this, but also does a lot more).Articulate Storyline has a very intuitive interface (almost identical to PowerPoint), so it's easy to learn. The functionality is very similar to Captivate, but it's more templated (vs. Captivate being more "build from the ground up"). This can be a pro or con, but in general, the Storyline model seems easier for new eLearning designers to learn and get started. Given the choice between Captivate or Storyline, my team members (who were new to eLearning design) elected to go with Storyline (but I was happy to stick with Captivate).

Moodle is more complex than I could handle. Softchalk has a user's troubleshooting manual that would have overwhelmed my customers. ProProfs has a poor sense of design and branding.

Return on Investment

  • The eLearning courses that were created using the tool have helped to increase associate's overall knowledge of our company and business processes.
  • Because the system is more complicated to use and to create courses the way you want them, we were not able to complete and publish as many courses as the business was demanding.

  • The sales potential made possible by SkyPrep functionality has made online training a major part of my business plan. Before I teamed up with SkyPrep it was merely a sideline.
