Adobe Connect

Adobe is a solid platform for a one-way presentation with one presenter sharing information to many others. There is an option for computer audio, or dial in by phone--a feature that I have used repeatedly when I was ON THE GO but needed to attend a meeting. Adobe has a recording function which is perfect for archiving minutes or discussions or saving training sessions that we redistribute later.

It suits my users well for remote control back to office PC's. We work a lot after hours and weekends and it saves us from having to drive to the office. It is not useful for client level support. Client's do not want it installed all the time. We use other applications for remote client support that we can spawn instances on the fly and is easy for client connection.

Pros

  • The Training function is extremely robust for sharing: we hold week-long technical training classes using a number of tools provided by AC. The ability to share the desktop is the most basic function, and it works exactly as it should - stably, quickly and compatibly across the various OSes.
  • The Training function allows for breakout rooms: we have, on average, 12 students in our classrooms. We typically use the dial-in bridge function (POTS) to ensure consistent audio quality, regardless of bandwidth issues. Our curriculum includes hands-on eLab functionality, and we pair-up the students during the 2nd-half of each day using the breakout-room function, which 'tucks' each pair of students into their own classroom, including the full telephony & AC tools for each breakout room. As the Host, I can easily 'jump' from room to room, giving me the ability to 'wander around the classroom' like in real life.
  • We have a large amount of course-offerings, each with their own sets of resources: Instructor guides, PowerPoint decks, Student guides, websites for technical support, as well as remote 'hands-on' equipment access, and the corresponding eLab procedural documents. We have organized all of these various resources in the AC 'cloud' that's provided within each classroom, making classroom readiness a breeze. Essentially, our technical trainers don't need to worry about having any of the courseware, PowerPoint slides and all the other 'crap' on their local computer when they log into the classroom. This 'cloud' storage is managed by our Content Development Team, so when major (and, more importantly, minor) changes & releases are made, the CDT backend process includes 'uploading' the content to the AC 'cloud', for each classroom. Basically, the flexibility of AC allows solid integration with our CDT release management process.

  • Initial setup is user friendly and intuitive. Just follow the steps.
  • Setting up user accounts and applicable access restrictions is very simple. Reviewing these at a glance is just as clear.
  • Once you're in, you're in! You are able to work on the remote destination without issue, all the way up to linking to network printers and local printers.
  • You can always see who is logged into which destination, audit their activity and, if needed, end or monitor their session.
  • You can set the security features in LogMeIn Pro up to notify the Admin user of an array of events, including login attempts (both successful and unsuccessful) and login attempted using invalid credentials. Very secure.

Cons

  • High Definition - It seems that no matter where you look, modern cameras are capable of capturing high definition video footage. Adobe needs to think about finding a way to upgrade the video quality and consistency that is viewable by the audience. There is the "least common denominator" factor to consider, but that is quickly rising, allowing better video opportunities.
  • HTML5 - As technology advances, so should Adobe. HTML5 offers the potential to hold meetings on any device despite its platform.
  • Flash - Quickly on its way out. It was one of the most proliferative installations on everyone's computer and in its time was stupendous. But it is quickly becoming dated. With the advent of HTML5, flash is quickly not becoming needed in order to have cross-platform content happen. With a strong push by Adobe, this could quickly become a reality for Connect.

  • LogMeIn Pro allows only one user to control the remote destination at a time. If more than one user needs to access/control the same destination, they can share the session (visibility to both parties), or will need to wait till the prior user is logged out for a more secure session. Being able to log in and use the same destination at the same time, initiating unique sessions would be ideal. (Similar to VPN.)
  • Ability to override or default session settings for security, for example blanking the remote monitor (or not), recording a session, or changing access while the user is in-session. This would allow an administrator or manager to more closely audit activity.
  • Provide a one-click logout+disconnect. Right now, users must disconnect their session before exiting LogMeIn Pro. If their session is not first disconnected and the user simply exits or logs out of LogMeIn Pro, the session may remain active, without disconnecting. This would show as an active session, even if the user is technically no longer using the remote destination.
  • More detailed audit information. What application did the user access while connected to the remote destination? Was the session shared with anyone else?

Likelihood to Renew

Adobe Connect10.0

The only reason I would see us renewing our contract is once again pricing, but also fear of switching. We cannot be certain that we won't encounter the same reliability, communication, and complexity issues we've experiences with the Adobe Connect software. I think this holds us back from switching, but ultimately, because of the vast and varied problems we've experienced with the platform, I do not believe we should or will renew our contract with Adobe Connect.

Usability

Adobe Connect9.0
Based on 5 answers
As sophisticated a product as Adobe Connect, the ease of use is outstanding. In my experience, even a user with very little knowledge of Adobe Connect can begin using and even leading sessions with very little training to get started with the basic features. Additional training is needed to become comfortable with the number of available features, but learning curve even for those is no steeper than would normally be expected from similar software.

The ability to have most of the functionality of a full LMS at a fraction of the cost is huge. I can create manage and deploy both synchronous and asynchronous training based on the situation and all of my training is tracked through a series of easily created reports

Implementation

Adobe Connect7.9
Based on 4 answers
Prices do not seem to vary much among resellers of the Adobe Connect hosted license; the only price variation you're likely to find are among the audio providers. When implementing, you may also wish to look into expanding the amount of storage you are allowed on the server to avoid any problems later on as your library of files starts to build up

Alternatives Considered

When evaluating the Adobe Connect Software, we actually wanted to switch to Webcast Studio, but did not have enough time to set up the software before our next web conference. Adobe Connect's pricing was also better and ultimately our evaluation team lead decided that because of timing and pricing we would stick with Adobe Connect for another year. As can be seen, I do think there are many other Web conference platforms that are better which include Webcast Studio and WebEx Meetings.

Cisco SSL VPN is great for a large corporation with the resources to invest in a more customization system. LogMeIn Pro remains accessible to the small, or single owner businesses looking for a remote access alternative with a very small financial footprint.

Return on Investment

  • Adobe connect has helped address travel time and costs. This has positively impacted our business objectives.
  • Adobe connect does not have a per user fee. This is helpful when doing informational webinars for users across the state.
  • The content management area has helped with server costs and information sharing.

  • Affordable financial investment for a huge return: remote user access. Much more financially accessible for a smaller company, in comparison to more traditional VPN services.
