Adobe Experience Manager

If you have a number of smaller parts of your organization that you want to maintain the same look & feel as the rest of the organization, it is easy to create a base site and then let them customize. Also, if you have contributors of content who are not involved in the web site maintenance - our professors, for example - they can enter the text on a basic page which is then incorporated through tagging

Cascade Server

Cascade is well suited for a web content management system, whether centralized or not; it's very adaptable to different environments, and works just as well for a small shop as a large one, for education, large businesses, or small non-profits. With the flexibility it offers, I can't think of a situation it would not fit; however, to set everything up someone in your team has to know some programming - or you can work with outside companies to help get you up and running. Their training is good, though, so if you have someone with a programming background they can be brought up to speed quickly.

Pros

  • Media library and asset management is simplified, separating storage and also allowing developers to manage the workflow of the publishing process.
  • No addition of API services are required, using the same requests and data access layer for both front end and back end development simplifies the project lifecycle.
  • Duplicating code is easy, developers can simply copy components and reuse or rework for each use case.

  • It is very easy to customize to your needs as well as your users needs. You can build out custom editors for different departments based on what kind of content the need to display.
  • It is really easy to use one editor to populate multiple pages not only in the same site but using different sites as well.
  • Since you can have multiple publish points, it is really easy to test out different design options when working on a redesign.

Cons

  • A lot of the OOB (Out Of the Box) components are still a little buggy and not fully ready to go without some minor tweaks.
  • Since the software was acquired not too long ago by Adobe, a lot of Adobe integrated solutions are not fully baked yet. That is getting better with time.
Vagner Polund profile photo
  • To be used to fullest potential, Cascade Server requires at least one developer who knows or is willing to learn Velocity script
  • Setting permissions for users could be simplified as, depending on your build, there are some redundancies regarding user setup

We had and still have a fantastic experience using Adobe CQ. Lots of flexibility, great integration with other Adobe products we already use and a powerful technology make it a great fit for our corporate environment. Also as the community grows, it makes it easier to network with other developers and users to get new ideas on how to continue to get the best out of the software.

We're invested monetarily, holistically and even emotionally in the use of Cascade Server. Frankly, to switch over to any other CMS now would slow us down. Besides, pricing has remained reasonable and new features keep being added all of the time.

I personally feel that AEM is very intuitive to use from an authoring standpoint. The entire CMS was engineered around the author. Everything about AEM is geared to helping authors generate and maintain content. There are ways that tool tips can be customized so that any individual could simply hover over and be guided step by step on how to author web content

They have always regarded any question or problem we encountered as very important. We have never felt that they ignore or downplay any issue and not once has anything been left unresolved. They also hold an annual conference where users are invited to attend and share their experiences and wisdom with the entire Cascade community. And with the care and support the provide, we all feel a part of that community.

Implementation

Adobe Experience Manager8.7
Based on 2 answers
Depending on your individual needs, It is really quite simple to create an authoring experience for a website that looks really good. I have been part of many implementations and many teams and have seen many projects that were super successful and others that were not implemented well. AEM has room for a lot of flexibility in the implementation process compared to other CMS like SharePoint

Making sure that our export from our previous CMS was correct was crucial. If it wasn't, we would have been in a world of hurt. Thanks to the import tool Hannon Hill created, everything went great and all pages were successfully imported.

Alternatives Considered

AEM exceeds WordPress on customizability. It is the backbone for the many modules and APIs we need to run our business.

We selected Cascade Server because it manages users more easily. It also requires less coding skills than MS SharePoint does. Drupal on the other hand is freeware so your user support for Drupal is what you would get for not paying for something. Cascade Server dumbs it down for everyday people with no coding experience to make changes on sites and not just wording changes. They can change the way a page is configured, completely change everything on the page and republish it in a matter of minutes. It is that simple.

Return on Investment

  • AEM allows authors to push content live in a matter of minutes. This has greatly increased launch times for business.
  • Good integration with Adobe Marketing suite allows for analytics.
  • Poor documentation of the system proves a challenge for developers and administrators.

  • I provide the Support on campus for Cascade Server. If I ever get an issue that cannot be solved I know I can easily contact Hannonhill and they will get my issues solved. For this my customer service on campus has greatly increased and makes it easier for me to troubleshoot.
