Adobe Experience Manager

Adobe Experience Manager is well suited for large organizations that need a powerful, comprehensive and robust CMS to manage multiple websites/translations of websites. It is also well suited for those who need a CMS that is well integrated with other systems such as analytics, targeting and email marketing, or those who want some fancy add ons like Adobe smart tags or AI-enhanced capabilities. It is also an expensive product with a steep learning curve, so it is less appropriate for smaller companies/individuals or those that don't need an overly robust system that is integrated with other digital marketing tools. If you're looking for a more affordable solution that is easy to pick up and play, go with a more basic WordPress or Joomla type option.

Certona

Well-suited for companies that have a wide breadth of products or services to offer. For companies that want to personalize large amounts of the customer experience, Certona is well-suited. If you are only looking to do small amounts of personalization or do relatively non-complex personalization, Certona may be a bit pricier than is needed.

Pros

  • Adobe Experience Manager is great for maintaining large websites with lots of content. It has a comprehensive repository and folder structure which makes it easy to organize and break down your website into sections.
  • Although we have not personally used it much yet, Adobe Experience Manager has integrations with the other Adobe Experience Cloud products such as Campaign, Target, and Analytics. The newest version(s) also have integrations with Creative Cloud products like Photoshop, which allows creatives to upload assets directly into the DAM.
  • Adobe Experience Manager has powerful live copy/translation tools that allow you to clone and translate webpages into other languages for alternate language versions of your site.

Cons

  • The new Touch UI interface could use a lot of improvement. Many of it is smaller detail items/features, but when using the system extensively it can become cumbersome.
  • There is a bit of a learning curve because of the depth of what Adobe Experience Manager can do. Even basic editing and page creation, while relatively simple at the most basic level, is not as intuitive and easy to use as other systems like Wordpress.
  • Development can be complicated. Although I've not personally done much in terms of dev work, my experience and what I've heard from my colleagues indicates that there are some complexities that make it not as easy to develop in as other systems.
  • The source edit option within the rich text editor does not include syntax coloring for the code, or even a different serif/monospaced font. It is the same sans serif font as the regular rich text, which makes it hard to read.

  • User portal can be slow, especially with larger reports
  • While support is usually quick to resolve issues, new implementation can be held up in a queue for long periods of time

We had and still have a fantastic experience using Adobe CQ. Lots of flexibility, great integration with other Adobe products we already use and a powerful technology make it a great fit for our corporate environment. Also as the community grows, it makes it easier to network with other developers and users to get new ideas on how to continue to get the best out of the software.

Usability

I personally feel that AEM is very intuitive to use from an authoring standpoint. The entire CMS was engineered around the author. Everything about AEM is geared to helping authors generate and maintain content. There are ways that tool tips can be customized so that any individual could simply hover over and be guided step by step on how to author web content

Depending on your individual needs, It is really quite simple to create an authoring experience for a website that looks really good. I have been part of many implementations and many teams and have seen many projects that were super successful and others that were not implemented well. AEM has room for a lot of flexibility in the implementation process compared to other CMS like SharePoint

Alternatives Considered

Adobe Experience Manager was chosen by our procurement team over the alternatives we considered primarily because of its seamless integration with other Adobe solution, which we were already using

Certona offered better pricing, a stronger data-based experience and algorithm-derived solution, and a better account management experience (based on customer feedback). Although the interface/portal for some of the other competitors was a little more user-friendly, we ultimately decided that it was worth compromising slightly on that aspect to get a product that was more robust overall.

Return on Investment

  • Our direct business landing pages have seen an increase in ROI since switching to Adobe Experience Manager.
  • Our non-direct pages have seen a severe drop-off in traffic and conversions since the switch to Adobe Experience Manager. The more creative, editorial-type content that used to be imperative to our site is now relegated to second tier. Just getting a "content hub" with this site was a beast of a project.
  • The overall efficiency of our web team has increased with bulk edits, so that they can make single updates and impact our multiple sites. This is a huge money-saver for team staffing.

  • Direct positive impact on total demand, as measured by the response rate of customers interacting with recommended products
  • Strong return on visual search product, which gives customers more views of the product during the search process
