Adobe Experience Manager

If you have a number of smaller parts of your organization that you want to maintain the same look & feel as the rest of the organization, it is easy to create a base site and then let them customize. Also, if you have contributors of content who are not involved in the web site maintenance - our professors, for example - they can enter the text on a basic page which is then incorporated through tagging

Ektron

I think Ektron is good for enterprise use where bang for the buck is a priority and there is a commitment to having an on-staff web team: developer, cms administrator, and lead author (at a minimum). For small organization use, I question if it is the best value in terms of staffing required and overkill of functionality; open-source options may be a better fit in this case. Ektron is great when there is lots of structured content that needs to be managed, displayed, and/or repurposed. If you are working with mostly free-form content, and at a smaller organization, I think there are other better options.

Pros

  • Manages web content with an intuitive WYSIWYG authoring experience.
  • Manages Digital Assets used by your website such as images, audio, documents, etc.
  • Creates an simple easy to use experience to generate web content. Centers all web content generation around the author.

  • The eSync product is one of the best tools on the market for synchronizing both content and its associated assets between and authoring and production environment
  • The Cloud Manager offers a streamlined process for hosting in the cloud
  • The Taxonomy functionality allows you to create one piece of content and serve it up contextually throughout other areas of the website with ease.

Cons

  • There is no easy way to change a template if it has been built a certain way. Sometimes it would be nice to have an option to add an extra item on the spot. Instead, you have to ask your IT team to create for you.
  • You can set up a staging site and a site to publish... but sometimes the 2 environments doesn't connect correctly, meaning some changes in the staging sites doesn't show of on the live site.
  • The quick publish button is dangerous and not that helpful: pages can be published with the "quick publish" option even if they are blocked... however, the purpose of a blocked page is to prevent it from publishing until you unblock it. Also, the "quick publish" option will publish your age and every other page connected to it! so be careful!!

  • The user interface within the administration area feels very dated
  • The Page Builder product produces a fair amount of extraneous html markup which can make some mobile implementations more complicated
  • The Page Builder product can case somewhat of a maintenance complication for large scale websites

We had and still have a fantastic experience using Adobe CQ. Lots of flexibility, great integration with other Adobe products we already use and a powerful technology make it a great fit for our corporate environment. Also as the community grows, it makes it easier to network with other developers and users to get new ideas on how to continue to get the best out of the software.

We think of Ektron as an investment and just like any investment, the longer you have it, the more ROI you receive (hopefully). We have been using Ektron since the CMS 300 days and have successfully upgraded to every version of the product since. Our content team is trained and comfortable with the product and we don't have any ambitions to change anytime soon.

Usability

I personally feel that AEM is very intuitive to use from an authoring standpoint. The entire CMS was engineered around the author. Everything about AEM is geared to helping authors generate and maintain content. There are ways that tool tips can be customized so that any individual could simply hover over and be guided step by step on how to author web content

As both a manager of CMS content as well as a designer, I find the CMS to be intuitive and easy to understand. (They also have great documentation and customer support if you need it.)

Between the platform's functionality and Ektron's technical support, I use the CMS with confidence on a daily basis.

Ektron is one of the best solution for .Net platform. Over the years have improved the performance issues that the previous versions had. My only complain is right now you can't do Page builder pages if you choose to have a MVC architecture

Implementation

Adobe Experience Manager8.7
Based on 2 answers
Depending on your individual needs, It is really quite simple to create an authoring experience for a website that looks really good. I have been part of many implementations and many teams and have seen many projects that were super successful and others that were not implemented well. AEM has room for a lot of flexibility in the implementation process compared to other CMS like SharePoint

Alternatives Considered

I had no involvement in the selection process of Adobe Experience Manager, however, from a user experience point of view, I would recommend it over other CMS due to its ease of use, user friendliness, and clean appearance. You can look at the pages by listing, or by structure. This makes it so easy to find pages

Our purchase was years ago, but at the time, Ektron was one of the few full-featured content management systems that fit our organization's budget. Others at the same price-point lacked features and flexibility.

Return on Investment

  • Difficult to calculate ROI, which would likely only be measured by time savings and improved SEO.
  • Takes time, which lowers productivity, to get up and running smoothly when first adopted.
  • Ensures we're using best practices, including maximizing SEO and more, through check lists and evaluations/ratings.

  • It's a very good tool to use in today's dynamic web where content needs to change often.
