Adobe Experience Manager

If you have a number of smaller parts of your organization that you want to maintain the same look & feel as the rest of the organization, it is easy to create a base site and then let them customize. Also, if you have contributors of content who are not involved in the web site maintenance - our professors, for example - they can enter the text on a basic page which is then incorporated through tagging

Ektron

From what I have heard, Ektron is great for security (forms).I would still recommend looking at any other CMS over Ektron. It is by far the worst I have ever used and, unfortunately, continue to use. If you have a large team of well-trained content editors, each in charge of small portions of a website, I could see Ektron being useful. If you are a small business or don't have unlimited funds to waste on a poorly made product, use Wordpress, Drupal, or Concrete. If you would like something that works well and comes with few 'undocumented features,' use the aforementioned as well.

Pros

  • Media library and asset management is simplified, separating storage and also allowing developers to manage the workflow of the publishing process.
  • No addition of API services are required, using the same requests and data access layer for both front end and back end development simplifies the project lifecycle.
  • Duplicating code is easy, developers can simply copy components and reuse or rework for each use case.

  • Forms are relatively easy to use and set up within Ektron, but by easier, I mean, easier than coding them by hand.

Cons

  • Steep learning curve for both Authors and Developers when it comes to customized components and workflows.
  • Development community is small and somewhat closed. It keeps growing with the years as CQ becomes more popular, which is a good thing.
  • Expensive, both to purchase, train and certify. This makes it harder to learn unless companies are willing to spend thousands on official training.

  • The evolution of the product has focused on architecture and functionality that is of value in large distributed installations, but less so for smaller 1 or 2 server implementations.
  • Development of the back end authoring and administrative interface has lagged. It has received a cosmetic face lift over the years, but has received little attention in regards to ease-of-use and usability. To some degree, it has poor discoverability with many idiosyncratic UI conventions.
  • Our authors complain about learning and retaining the knowledge for using the authoring interface. In Ektron's usage model, it is a skilled role. We would prefer the authoring be more intuitive. I don't feel Ektron necessarily lags behind the competition in this area, but there is lots of room for improvement and differentiation here if they chose to make this a priority.

Likelihood to Renew

We had and still have a fantastic experience using Adobe CQ. Lots of flexibility, great integration with other Adobe products we already use and a powerful technology make it a great fit for our corporate environment. Also as the community grows, it makes it easier to network with other developers and users to get new ideas on how to continue to get the best out of the software.

As a partner and system integrator, we will continue to recommend that our customers renew their use of the Ektron CMS product. I would recommend that any customer/organization that has invested in software/services to create a CMS website remain on that platform for a minimum of 3 years so that the can effectively monitor/evaluate their ROI, the CMS product road-map; and, as they mature with their use of the CMS overtime, then begin looking to see what additional features that they need (and why). Switching to a new CMS product is not one to be taken lightly; but, typically, if it's going to be done, it tends to be at times when (1) a redesign is needed (2) your hosting contract is up for renewal.

Usability

I personally feel that AEM is very intuitive to use from an authoring standpoint. The entire CMS was engineered around the author. Everything about AEM is geared to helping authors generate and maintain content. There are ways that tool tips can be customized so that any individual could simply hover over and be guided step by step on how to author web content

Usability principles have been a part of modern web application development for some time now. Ektron lags behind in this area. It's not that the back end is terrible, but to me it does not reflect commitment, expertise, and a systematic approach to usability in Ektron's development process. There are too many UI idiosyncrasies and inconsistencies for my liking.

Ektron is one of the best solution for .Net platform. Over the years have improved the performance issues that the previous versions had. My only complain is right now you can't do Page builder pages if you choose to have a MVC architecture

Implementation

Adobe Experience Manager8.7
Based on 2 answers
Depending on your individual needs, It is really quite simple to create an authoring experience for a website that looks really good. I have been part of many implementations and many teams and have seen many projects that were super successful and others that were not implemented well. AEM has room for a lot of flexibility in the implementation process compared to other CMS like SharePoint

Alternatives Considered

We selected Adobe CQ mostly for the ease of page authoring in brought to our non-technical staff. Powerful and simple UI widgets made it very simple for our merchandiser to create, edit and publish new pages. It also allowed us to customize those widgets to fit their needs while keeping the same clean experience. We also saw a plus in the ability to run activation workflows based on our own organization hierarchy, which helped make sure the right pages were exposed to the right eyes before going live. Overall, it was the mixture of user-friendliness of the authoring interface with the robustness of the technology stack that convinced us to go with CQ.

Ektron fares well against each of these from a CMS perspective and distinguishes itself from the add-ons provided such as experience hub connectors, mobile support and eSync. Pricing is substantially different from the open source based products but lower than Sitecore and Adobe CQ. Adobe CQ is the leading WCM in this world especially with their full marketing cloud offering and integration with other products. Ektron has done a good job recognizing that marketing departments are driving the spend and tailoring their product and features sets to support those internal organization stakeholders. In addition from an IT perspective shifting to support not only on-premise but cloud based environments is matching the trend especially for public facing websites.

Return on Investment

  • I am not involved in the acquisition part of AEM as the client was the one involved in that decision.

  • Better efficiency and control over content. Faster creation of content specifically marketing campaign based landing pages. Easier implementation and tracking site visitor info and support for mobile has been easier to maintain.
  • Ektron has a wealth of features. implementing these requires in depth training and planning.
