Adobe Experience Manager

If you have a number of smaller parts of your organization that you want to maintain the same look & feel as the rest of the organization, it is easy to create a base site and then let them customize. Also, if you have contributors of content who are not involved in the web site maintenance - our professors, for example - they can enter the text on a basic page which is then incorporated through tagging

OpinionLab

OpinionLab is best suited where you want unrestrained, unbiased feedback and not complicated surveys. It means you get less structured information, but you DO get information you hadn't anticipated that leads you in new directions. Most useful when you can tie it to other analytical systems such as Tealeaf, ClickTale, Adobe Analytics, etc.

Pros

  • It is easy for people who are not web designers to achieve an attractive and useful website
  • It is easy to manage users and their permissions
  • It allows users to assemble their digital assets in one place, for use on the web site
Diana Williams profile photo
  • Easily deployed, using either standard templates or custom installs.
  • Easy reporting interface, and good delivery options for automated reports.
  • Extendable methods for extracting real-time voice of the customer comments during product launches, releases or other critical timeframes.

Cons

  • Upgrading and applying patches can be hit or miss - I recommend backups because of the potential to damage the existing infrastructure
  • Space management is an issue - every change or request takes up space that can be reclaimed, but only through a complicated procedure done through command prompts. There was no documentation for this on their site and we had to use a third party to create the procedure. It has to be run manually.
  • There isn't a good backup system, particularly one that can be scheduled to run reliably.

  • Does simple very well, but complicated not as well. It is NOT a survey system.
  • Some of the reports are still a bit old for display, but new features have been released recently giving more options.
  • Standard deployment templates may be a bit limited for customization, or you need to go to fully customized and do the development yourself.

We had and still have a fantastic experience using Adobe CQ. Lots of flexibility, great integration with other Adobe products we already use and a powerful technology make it a great fit for our corporate environment. Also as the community grows, it makes it easier to network with other developers and users to get new ideas on how to continue to get the best out of the software.

The cost versus product is a good value, so it all depends on the customer's needs/wants, and of course, budget

Usability

I personally feel that AEM is very intuitive to use from an authoring standpoint. The entire CMS was engineered around the author. Everything about AEM is geared to helping authors generate and maintain content. There are ways that tool tips can be customized so that any individual could simply hover over and be guided step by step on how to author web content

Implementation

Depending on your individual needs, It is really quite simple to create an authoring experience for a website that looks really good. I have been part of many implementations and many teams and have seen many projects that were super successful and others that were not implemented well. AEM has room for a lot of flexibility in the implementation process compared to other CMS like SharePoint

Alternatives Considered

I think AEM is specific to the client's needs and is not necessarily comparable to all other platforms. However, when compared feature to feature I think AEM many times is a leader in the industry. While WordPress has progressed in the WYSIWYG interface it is not there still today and this is truly where AEM shines against all of the other CMS platforms.

OpinionLab is one of the few out there that does two things very well in it's space: 1. Customer Feedback - just feedback, not surveys. Feedback is free text without more than one or two structured questions. Most survey systems offer too many options, and their reporting is made for structured data analysis not analysis of the open text fields. Some of the other tools viewed did not have the best features for medium or large scale deployment, from an analysis perspective, real-time data extract and download, or customization for branding.

Return on Investment

  • Extreme flexibility and speed to publish new pages with as little as a few hours of notice. This allowed us to be more efficient in handling landing pages for lead generation.
  • Powerful technology stack that allows for an infinite amount of customization. New ideas came up as we learned all the capabilities of CQ. It helped us innovate in the way we build and author pages.
  • Poor documentation and small community slowed our initial ramp up and development times until first release. By now this should have improved with the increased popularity.

  • OpinionLab has provided very valuable insights, as a method of detection of site issues or customer struggle, where we can tie it to a customer experience in Tealeaf or Clicktale and then quantify the issue.
  • Feedback in customer service applications has also helped us improve our call center agent's experience by allowing them to report application issues on a system that didn't have as much analyst or product development priority, and reduce our average handle time.
