Adobe Experience Manager

If you have a number of smaller parts of your organization that you want to maintain the same look & feel as the rest of the organization, it is easy to create a base site and then let them customize. Also, if you have contributors of content who are not involved in the web site maintenance - our professors, for example - they can enter the text on a basic page which is then incorporated through tagging

We use it to track feature usage of our Clients. It does this very well. We also use it to provide in-app messaging to our clients. This has been a major benefit to our company as it was very hard to do this previously. Pendo provides a variety of different types of messages and click-through messages that enable us to better educate our clients.

Pros

  • It is easy for people who are not web designers to achieve an attractive and useful website
  • It is easy to manage users and their permissions
  • It allows users to assemble their digital assets in one place, for use on the web site

  • Incredibly intuitive user interface. The help documentation is also fantastic - easy to find relevant articles/tips.
  • Love that when I tag a new feature on a page, I'll get data about its usage from the start of when the Pendo code was added to that page. When I wanted to see how my users were interacting with a certain feature, I tagged it and got data from the beginning of the year when Pendo was first added to the page -it was great!
  • The in-app banners/tooltips are fantastic. I think this may be my favorite part about Pendo. We're able to engage with our users while they are IN our product and actually using it instead of using email to reach out.

Cons

  • Styling the front-end of the author interface can sometimes be challenging. Built in styles and HTML can be overwhelming until you get used to it. Having a less intrusive author output or defining a standard output per site could speed development.
  • Documentation is often outdated, keeping docs up to date and readily available is needed.
  • The local build process is slow and takes a lot of space. Reducing the overhead with local testing would be great!

  • I'd love to see more ways to create segments so that I can really tailor my in-app communications to very targeted groups.
  • I'd like easier customization, more WYSIWYG functionality with the banners and lightboxes.

I'll continue to use this product for many years. Adobe is making it clear they are taking customer feedback seriously and there continues to be growing demand for Adobe CQ implementations. As a developer, I find that there is still lots of room in this platform to try new techniques and really keep our implementations up to par with the latest standards.

I personally feel that AEM is very intuitive to use from an authoring standpoint. The entire CMS was engineered around the author. Everything about AEM is geared to helping authors generate and maintain content. There are ways that tool tips can be customized so that any individual could simply hover over and be guided step by step on how to author web content

Pendo is easy to use, but you still need to know what you're tracking. Until then, it will show a lot of information that you may not know how to leverage.

Implementation

Depending on your individual needs, It is really quite simple to create an authoring experience for a website that looks really good. I have been part of many implementations and many teams and have seen many projects that were super successful and others that were not implemented well. AEM has room for a lot of flexibility in the implementation process compared to other CMS like SharePoint

Alternatives Considered

We selected Adobe CQ mostly for the ease of page authoring in brought to our non-technical staff. Powerful and simple UI widgets made it very simple for our merchandiser to create, edit and publish new pages. It also allowed us to customize those widgets to fit their needs while keeping the same clean experience. We also saw a plus in the ability to run activation workflows based on our own organization hierarchy, which helped make sure the right pages were exposed to the right eyes before going live. Overall, it was the mixture of user-friendliness of the authoring interface with the robustness of the technology stack that convinced us to go with CQ.
