Adobe Experience Manager

If you have a number of smaller parts of your organization that you want to maintain the same look & feel as the rest of the organization, it is easy to create a base site and then let them customize. Also, if you have contributors of content who are not involved in the web site maintenance - our professors, for example - they can enter the text on a basic page which is then incorporated through tagging

It's good if you want to use it as is, maybe with some modules. Developing for it is a totally different issue and I don't recommend it unless there is a full team of experienced developers, and/or an outsourced prestashop team.

Pros

  • AEM is great for customization. Web Dev builds the parts and authors use what they need.
  • Branding can be ensured with the ability to require brand colors, fonts, and styles.
  • It's easy to see who has built, modified, and published pages. It makes tracking changes very convenient.

  • Easy to install and have up quickly.
  • Lots of potential for customization and development overrides to shape the system the way it is needed.
  • Constant upgrades and bug fixes.
  • Lots of add-ons to choose.

Cons

  • The move to the new interface for authoring is drastically different from the previous interface. Moving has been difficult.
  • Since it is so customizable, a talented web dev team is needed to make all the parts.
  • It is not easy to tell if the page is live or draft in the new interface.
  • Integration with non-Adobe marketing automation tools is very difficult.

  • Documentation and support needs to be updated and expanded. There's a lack of books, and the only support aside from the forum is official prestashop support, which is not cheap. The system is too massive to have such little support.
  • Too many things can go wrong with too little explanation as to why. Too much time is wasted trying to figure out why prestashop isn't working as intended because of this. Seems that most of the questions online are people fumbling around with vague issues and errors and no explanation.
  • Code should either be organized more intuitively, or there should be more help outlining what is going on during runtime for debug purposes. Why is there not a built in way to display the tpl that is being loaded in each section? I tried figuring out how to do it myself using the documentation but gave up. Instead I have to swim through the entire code to figure out how to do it myself. Should not be this complicated.
  • Too many things can go wrong when transferring or copying the website, which essentially breaks everything. Again, too little help and messages explaining why things don't work. Internet search shows that this is a common issue.

I'll continue to use this product for many years. Adobe is making it clear they are taking customer feedback seriously and there continues to be growing demand for Adobe CQ implementations. As a developer, I find that there is still lots of room in this platform to try new techniques and really keep our implementations up to par with the latest standards.

Usability

I personally feel that AEM is very intuitive to use from an authoring standpoint. The entire CMS was engineered around the author. Everything about AEM is geared to helping authors generate and maintain content. There are ways that tool tips can be customized so that any individual could simply hover over and be guided step by step on how to author web content

Implementation

Depending on your individual needs, It is really quite simple to create an authoring experience for a website that looks really good. I have been part of many implementations and many teams and have seen many projects that were super successful and others that were not implemented well. AEM has room for a lot of flexibility in the implementation process compared to other CMS like SharePoint

Alternatives Considered

It really comes down to how much money you are willing to spend (Adobe is more) and the skill set of your developers (Sitecore is .NET vs. Adobe is Java).

We did not select it, the team before us selected it because it was free. All development was outsourced to a prestashop team.

Return on Investment

  • Positive: Can quickly create and launch marketing campaigns.
  • Negative: Can be expensive to develop custom AEM experiences.

  • Not sure, it is the only e-commerce platform we have used.
