Adobe Experience Manager

If the employees in charge of creating pages are not developers, this is a great platform since everything is easy and drag and drop style. For a developer, this might be more frustrating since small code tweaks are not as accessible.

Titan CMS

Titan CMS works best when one specific person can be completely dedicated to it. In my past experience, when multiple people work with it, it can be difficult to control hidden content/pages, and other fine details. While it is user friendly, I honestly feel that people that have not worked with prior CMS will be much slower picking it up than WordPress

Pros

  • Easily searchable with the proper meta data
  • Creating links to assets, publishing assets and sharing assets is very easy and fast
  • Uploading files and creating folders is fast and easy

  • Layout/structure of information - Fairly intuitive, it is easy to search for content (within the CMS) if your website is large. However, a CMS truly can only be as organized as the user is.
  • WYSIWYG editor - Creating and publishing pages is extremely easy, the WYSIWYG editor standard, but gets the job done. Applying styles, linking content, adding tables, videos, etc is all very simple.
  • Customizable - There is no limit of possibilities of page layouts, styles, data organization, etc. If you have HTML experience, you can really create anything you'd ever need in the Titan Administration area (where you have access to page layouts and styling).

Cons

  • Adding meta data to batch files would make it much more efficient
  • You still need to convert any Word or Excel docs to PDFs if this was on auto when you have multiple files, it would also save time

  • I would love to see a "View this Page" button after a page has been updated/published. Every time I publish a new page, I have to open a new browser window, navigate to a different tab, copy the page url "example/example/example" and paste it after "www.mywebsite.com" in order to preview the new page/content.
  • If Titan and WordPress were in a beauty competition, there is no way that Titan would win. Titan's dashboard, buttons, etc are dated and bland, and is in dire need of a refresh.
  • A drag and drop to upload feature would be very helpful.
  • Creating forms is very cumbersome and the pop-up window in which the form is created needs to be revamped. The font-size is much too small and it is not as customizable as it could be.

Adobe CQ has training classes that you can be in or watch to get a better understanding. They have some of the best customer support so if you run into any problems you can just contact them put a ticket in and they will fix it or work with you to fix the problem or issue you are running into.

Usability

I personally feel that AEM is very intuitive to use from an authoring standpoint. The entire CMS was engineered around the author. Everything about AEM is geared to helping authors generate and maintain content. There are ways that tool tips can be customized so that any individual could simply hover over and be guided step by step on how to author web content

Everything we've needed to accomplish, Titan CMS has been able to accomplish. From multiple levels of user rights, document rights, tagging pages and documents to make filters do the work of content displayed on a page - it's all easy to set up too. Creating a content rich product detail page template and customizing a ecommerce cart to work for those using a dealer network - needing a request for quote, to go to dealers instead of a self checkout.

I give a rating of 9 out of 10 only because sometimes when we call support the problem is fixed for us, but the explanation is vague or none at all. We prefer to know what was done and if possible, if there was something we could have done to prevent needing to call support for it. Not a big deal really.

It was customized to include screen shots of our site and how users can access the content that only pertains to them as well as advanced training sessions for admin duties and everything that goes along with it. Training is in small groups and can be private (your company only) if you like too.

Implementation

Depending on your individual needs, It is really quite simple to create an authoring experience for a website that looks really good. I have been part of many implementations and many teams and have seen many projects that were super successful and others that were not implemented well. AEM has room for a lot of flexibility in the implementation process compared to other CMS like SharePoint

Talk to your project manager for Titan early on in development about minimalizing customizations. It seems obvious, but many times they do what you ask in the respect of "This is how we do it now, make that happen in Titan" vs. think of how Titan can deliver the same results within the confines of the base software. It's not a fault, just human nature.

Return on Investment

  • Difficult to calculate ROI, which would likely only be measured by time savings and improved SEO.
  • Takes time, which lowers productivity, to get up and running smoothly when first adopted.
  • Ensures we're using best practices, including maximizing SEO and more, through check lists and evaluations/ratings.

  • Positive ROI by allowing content contributors embedded within departments with the department domain knowledge to update the site directly. More efficient and less centralized spending.
  • Requirement for investment in training users of CMS cuts into ROI. Would recommend a two-step workflow where department content contributors enter information into CMS and then approval step is done by webmaster team to ensure content meets standard formatting guidelines. This workflow functionality exists in the Titan CMS.
  • Positive ROI experienced during projects such as moving to a responsive design because much of the content can migrate untouched. Also positive when updating graphics in template to give site new look.
