Adobe LiveCycle ES4

We use PDF forms for our submissions to the USPTO as well as for obtaining signature documents. With LiveCycle, I can update forms, save them, load them into my docketing database, and have them pre-populated with data. This process ensures continuity, less chance for error, and the ability to save the paralegals time when it comes to preparing filings.

Appian

Surely Appian is not a Site Development Tool. So we should avoid the use of a system for just UX development. We should look for process automation as much as we can mature the use cases.

Pros

  • It enables me to quickly update and distribute forms that have been changed.
  • The layout features help ensure that the forms look professional.
  • The ability to preview what the final form will look like and how it will work, while still editing, is extremely helpful.

  • The team we had to build the prototype (including the consultants from Appian) was fantastic. We implemented the prototype in three short Agile sprints (6 weeks in total), and the resulting prototype was high quality with lots of functionality of excellent quality.
  • Because Appian is a product suite, all the components worked seamlessly together - we had no issues with integration and could focus on the experience for the business customer, the concepts to prove and the problems we were there to solve.

Cons

  • There are so many bells and whistles it can be intimidating.
  • It is not a product you just pick up and use, there is some training needed.

  • Process Modeling - Appian is currently moving away from their desktop portal model and into web-based access. This requires some significant reworking of their underlying structures. That being said, their new technology and modeling options are extremely exciting and should provide significant enhancements and flexibility over the plain portal environment option.
  • Form Design - I would like to see greater flexibility in form design and form preview.
  • Training - Appian offers a plethora of training but the ability to tailor training to meet specific needs of an audience would be a welcomed addition.
  • Reports - There needs to be greater flexibility in configuring and printing of reports.

We recently renewed our license with Appian. We are convinced that its flexibility, relative ease of use, the support they provide, there mobile advancements and their general willingness and desire to see us succeed all contributed to our reason to renew our agreement with Appian

We are a cloud customer and their technical support organization is very good. Their timeliness in addressing issues and questions and technical knowledge is excellent! Their customer representatives also provide a high level of support. They always check with our company on how they are doing and what they could improve on. Also, have been good at making recommendations for possible future uses of Appian within our company.

As analyst I participated in a developer boot camp. At times it was hard to keep up but most of the time it made sense. Trainer took the time to explain and slowed pace down to answer questions etc.

Alternatives Considered

Because LiveCycle comes with the Adobe Suite, I've never really looked outside of it because it was something I already had access to.

When evaluating Appian we were asked to compare it to other enterprise tools we currently use such as Atlassian's JIRA and Rally. It is really impossible to compare the two for the simple fact that within Appian you can build the workflows and data capture mechanisms that each of these tools offer. The difference is that with Appian you can customize the workflows to an infinite degree whereas with an off the shelf application you are relatively limited to what the developer provides.

Return on Investment

  • Having LiveCycle enables me to offer more products in my lineup, so that is always a good thing. Most clients like the idea of being able to purchase a template and then making changes themselves, so I've had quite a few sales here. However it's not really something that will make me rich overnight or anything. It's just a tool that enables me to have different products.
  • If they could figure out a way to improve the limitations in terms of design capability in the form creation process, I could probably leverage this software a lot better since I would use it more.

  • Increased Visibility - Visibility into the amount and type of work across the organization has allowed senior management to make better and more informed decisions
  • Improved Efficiency - Reduced the number of different work intake processes by 85% which makes the intake, review and disposition of requests much faster
  • ROI - Better decisions, more efficient processing of work requests improves resource management and allocation ultimately reducing costs
  • Workload Reduction - Many of the organization's processes were still be managed via spreadsheets and email. This required talented personnel to spend more time shuffling papers than focusing on more meaningful and rewarding work.
