Adobe LiveCycle ES4

We use PDF forms for our submissions to the USPTO as well as for obtaining signature documents. With LiveCycle, I can update forms, save them, load them into my docketing database, and have them pre-populated with data. This process ensures continuity, less chance for error, and the ability to save the paralegals time when it comes to preparing filings.

PaperTrail

The functionality that PaperTrail gives you is very important, but there are so many other offerings in the space that it's hard to advocate for PaperTrail over other options. One of the large problems with it is it's a one-off offering, and we need to use it in tandem with other systems.

Pros

  • It enables me to quickly update and distribute forms that have been changed.
  • The layout features help ensure that the forms look professional.
  • The ability to preview what the final form will look like and how it will work, while still editing, is extremely helpful.

  • UI Tools are Real Time: Pulling up a logging trace means having a view that will reload in near-real-time
  • PaperTrail works with existing, open-source logging software; all we need to do is drop it into our projects and point the URLs to PaperTrail

Cons

  • There are so many bells and whistles it can be intimidating.
  • It is not a product you just pick up and use, there is some training needed.

  • Interface is aging and in need of a re-write. It's functional, but not all that nice to work with
  • While the logs are near-real-time, they could greatly improve the speed at which logs are available in the UI
  • Pricing plans are not all that competitive with newer offerings with other companies

Alternatives Considered

Because LiveCycle comes with the Adobe Suite, I've never really looked outside of it because it was something I already had access to.

While there are a number of entries in the space, PaperTrail offers a great product. Their per/GB pricing is competitive with others. It's also very easy to get into projects and teams, and automating setup is very simple. It's also very easy to set up archiving to other long-term data storage solutions, like S3.

Return on Investment

  • Having LiveCycle enables me to offer more products in my lineup, so that is always a good thing. Most clients like the idea of being able to purchase a template and then making changes themselves, so I've had quite a few sales here. However it's not really something that will make me rich overnight or anything. It's just a tool that enables me to have different products.
  • If they could figure out a way to improve the limitations in terms of design capability in the form creation process, I could probably leverage this software a lot better since I would use it more.

  • PaperTrail saves developers ($$$) a lot of time trying to track down where errors occured; rather than needing to SSH into machines and view error logs, all error logs for certain applications are available in one view
