Adobe Marketing Cloud

This is definitely a tool for enterprises. You need to have a certain level of complexity before you pay for this tool. You should have multiple funnels, websites, or an insane amount of content. If you are involved in ecommerce, this is a worthwhile investment. However, if you have a smaller site, little content, only a single funnel, or don't sell anything online, this is a much less worthwhile tool for you.

Sitecore

Great for companies that are looking to create customized, tailored content solutions and be willing to put in the hard work and effort to maximize the value out of the tool. If your company is just looking for very basic content management without all the bells and whistles, I'd recommend looking elsewhere for less [money].

Pros

  • Content Analysis - Between the Pages report and the participation metrics which show what percentage of conversions a page was involved with, you get an excellent analysis of what content is important and effective, and what is not. With the ability to add up to ten metrics side by side, drill downs, and power tools like Ad Hoc Analysis, you will know exactly where you need better content.
  • Pathing - Adobe Analytics captures every single path of every single visit of every single visitor and puts it at your fingertips. There are tools to aggregate common paths so you find out how frequent they are, lots of good page flow reports, and tools to pick out specific paths that will keep you from being overwhelmed. This has been absolutely invaluable to us as we have learned about how our customers are using our sites and which paths are leading to exits rather than converions.
  • Customization - There are so many custom metrics and dimensions you can add and you can create segments based on all of them, along with the out of the box metrics and dimensions. You truly get an implementation that is specific to your company, your needs, your strategy, and your site.

  • The ability to build and extend Sitecore so that it does exactly what you want is a key selling point to our organization.
  • Building custom reusable blocks while difficult at first has helped us to leverage code to shorten time for subsequent improvements.
  • The user level permissions help us keep section administrators from accidentally taking down the entire site.
  • Publishing workflow ensures that we present a consistent message, and saves us from "accidental sales" where we advertise products for $1 instead of the $200,000 we expect.

Cons

  • Price - it's very expensive which leaves it out of reach for mid-level and smaller companies
  • clunky visuals - competitors like Oracle have a more aesthetically appealing interface, though less functionality
  • constantly changing, names of modules are changing as Adobe acquires new tech and phases it into existing cloud

  • Analytics Bundled or Third Party: Bundled analytics system is very difficult to implement. But this is not entirely a systems problem but due in large part to the comparison to data from other already implemented, used and trust systems. Also implementation is likely put aside or given less priority due to focus on difficult website requirements, which is understandable. There is a gap in training and early inclusion of company analytic and optimisation departments. Sitecore has rebranded and drastically modified this DMS, OMS and Experience over and over out of frustration of low adoption.
  • Core Database Exclusion: A certified developer is trained to use the system entirely through the provided official API's and content tree. Complex business requirement such as e-commerce and user to user interaction can be forced into tree structures and implemented with out-of-box API's, There are instances this fails and a more complex systems integration is needed, which becomes a better fit but in hind site make a Sitecore CMS expensive and unjustified.
  • Page Editor is a powerful tool for editing content within a more user friendly environment but is not intended as an end all solution for all editing needs.

Although a powerful tool, Google Analytics has been catching up in capabilities and is much simpler to use.As analytics move to the spotlight, more sections in a company want to have access to it. However, creating straightforward reports/dashboards and sharing them with different groups is not a strength of Adobe Marketing Cloud.

Make sure you work with a partner that can help you take advantage of the entire platform. Specifically we see a lot of customers not taking advantage of Sitecore DMS and thus missing a huge opportunity. Sitecore is a platform that is meant to be constantly optimized and improved upon.

Alternatives Considered

As an agency, we are vendor agnostic so we typically recommend a tool based on our client's specific needs. Both Google Analytics 360 and Adobe Marketing Cloud are powerful tools, but if a client does not have the appropriate organizational pre-requisites to leverage the outputs, they should not invest in either and focus on that.

A great CMS is expected these days, what Sitecore brings to the table is the additional components that a marketer needs for a single digital hub. Personalization, Email Campaigns, CRM Integration, AB Testing and Analytics.

All of those features come in the core Sitecore platform and make it untouchable.

Return on Investment

  • As an agency, we typically see the highest return with clients that are more sophisticated and that have the ability to invest in multiple components, as well as have the internal resources and processes to act on the data and insights.
  • I've also seen less sophisticated clients invest in one or two components without having a deep understanding of how to use them or the expertise to use them efficiently to have a significant business impact.

  • Good feedback received from mobile users (responsive design, renders nice)
  • Speed to deliver value-added updates to the site for customers.
  • Our site was designed in a way that encouraged users to take advantage of our other offerings (webinars, live calls) . Since having our sites developed on Sitecore, we've seen that cross-service usage significantly increase.
