Twitter Ads

Twitter has a decent B2B set of targeting, and being able to target based on profile descriptions has been helpful. Running ads on Twitter is often underrated, but since the CPMs and CPCs driven by Twitter are usually very efficient, it's a hard platform to rule out. Twitter, versus another B2B platform like LinkedIn, is much more cost efficient to run ads on, while still being able to reach a Professional audience. For Consumer ads, Twitter is also a viable option, but I personally have more experience using Twitter Ads for B2B ads.

Pros

  • This product is easy to learn.
  • This product is easy to implement into current business plans.
  • This product has more bells and whistles than most people who use this type of platform know what to do with on a daily basis.

  • Ease of use. It's very simple to add new creative to an existing campaign, or to quickly promote a tweet.
  • Reporting. I appreciate the dashboard that shows how many organic and paid impressions tweets have received, as well as the resulting engagements.
  • Low-lift advertising. The new auto-promote option makes it so I don't have to choose which tweets I want to promote.

Cons

  • At the time it was missing some of the features available with Marin Software and Kenshoo regarding keyword filtering and the ability to quickly add new keywords.

  • You must be careful how you handle your advertising to avoid saturating users. On Twitter if there is something that abounds, it is advertising.
  • I have seen little intention on the part of Twitter, as great as the company is, to teach its users to use this application for advertising. Many use it to waste their time and not to take advantage of it.

It has performed well above our expectations and has given us the time we'd be better off spending on building new strategies and customer development, over manual PPC campaign management. The ROI far exceeds what we could have promised on our own with many clients and we wouldn't want to give up that kind of almost guaranteed ROI for our clients.

It definitely takes some instruction to get to be able to use the system. One would struggle trying to get it to work without any previous experience with it. If you are famailiar with the interface it is actually quite fast and easy to maneuver around.

The tool is ok to use, and ads are becoming more skippable on Twitter, so we are unsure as a company if it's still a good channel for direct response messaging. It does not perform as efficiently as other social platforms for lower funnel marketing. It does well for awareness campaigns that are set and forget, but optimizing for DR is not as efficient when you are trying to manage the ads on the client side.

Alternatives Considered

Adobe Media Optimizer is the best solution if you are already an Omniture customer because of the deep integration and the ability to pull reports from either interface.
