Adobe Premiere Pro

Premiere Pro is especially helpful for those with a basic knowledge of video creation, who want to make professional grade video content without having to rely on an agency. As someone who does marketing for the companies I work for, as well as occasionally freelancing, I find that Premiere Pro really fits my needs nicely. I wouldn't necessarily suggest it for someone just starting out in editing, at least not without some additional learning first.

Final Cut Pro X

I would say that the only application where FCPX might lack is for full, feature-length films. The color correction tool is a "lite" version and cannot handle editing 10-bit (or more) or RAW files color correcting. I use Colore Finale Pro to supplement this. The best use of this product is with shorter, even documentary-style videos that don't need deep, detailed color grading or extensive customization of the footage or project

Pros

  • It's an all-encompassing platform for video content creators. I've never needed come across a time where I needed a feature present and it wasn't there.
  • Premiere pro's ability to easily edit not only video but audio in many capacities is especially helpful. It's nice not to have to go into Audition for slight audio changes.
  • The quality of videos produced in Premiere, even by non-professionals is very impressive. It's very possible to create professional commercial grade promotions with this program.

  • The render speed of Final Cut Pro X is incredible. Everything is rendered while you're working, so the exporting of a file does not take long.
  • The interface has a similar feel to iMovie, which is what I upgraded from, so it was easy to adjust to this new program. The learning curve of software can be a real barrier to entry to newcomers.
  • The color correction system is fantastic. With a recent update, Final Cut Pro X now allows full-blown color correction to your projects. It is much easier to get the same look across all clips than it used to be.

Cons

  • There is quite a bit of a learning curve when it comes to learning Premiere Pro. I definitely suggest reading up on the basics or taking a starter class because muddling my first year through the platform without any assistance was hard and involved quite a bit of trial and error.
  • The platform itself is large, so much so that it takes up a good chunk of my hard drive. You will also need space for the Media Encoder and all your files. Keep this in mind especially if you have other Creative Cloud applications installed.

  • I would love for FCPX to increase it's audio capabilities. Currently, when shooting, I record audio live into Logic Pro X, then export and bring into FCPX. I'd love for Apple to build better integration between the two, or to build better tools in FCPX.
  • I'd also love a few more complex compositing tools to be built in. Most items from Motion cross over, but occasionally I have to use Motion for one tiny thing that could be added to FCPX.

Final Cut Pro is a great software package for editing, and obviously, good things require training to understand and comprehend what your are editing. I do not give a 10/10 because it would be easier to have a comprehensive manual inside the software, rather that researching or getting yourself trained.

Customer service is very knowledgeable about what your problem is and they take your time to resolve any issue that you might have. I had an opportunity to call to resolve a problem, and the interaction with the rep was very nice and interesting, definitely went above and beyond

Implementing Final Cut Pro into the organization was a smooth transition from what we didn't had. We felt we went from zero to hero with this software, due to all the great features that we learned. We took some time in training staff on how to use the software but at the end, this was very useful and important.

Alternatives Considered

iMovie: great for home videos, putting together quick, simple projects. I truly love it for its simplicity and ability to learn with almost no knowledge of nonlinear video editing, easily publishing to YouTube or Vimeo, etc.Premiere Pro: this (or something of similar scale) is what's truly required for any sort of professional video editing that is more involved than simply splicing a few clips together.

Final Cut Pro X stacks up well against Premiere Pro in my opinion. If you're looking for something a bit more basic in functionality that's easy to use Final Cut Pro X is great. In my experience, if you're doing a much larger project with lots of editing, correcting, and many multiple layers of clips, Premiere may have a bit better functionality for that.

Return on Investment

  • It's definitely allowed us to communicate key messages clearly and effectively to both internal and external audiences.
  • Given that it's part of the Creative Cloud suite, it's an absolute steal for the money. The biggest investment will be your time actually using the software. In money terms, ROI is through the roof.
  • Because video is such a valuable medium to marketers, Premiere Pro has allowed us to grab the attention of viewers and (provided we've done our jobs well) keep that attention and turn it into business action.
