Adobe Premiere Pro

If one is for looking for Advanced video editing right out of the box and also great cross-collaboration between different files involving after-effects and photoshop then this software is very well suited. If you are just looking for just basic video editing without much-advanced controls for the product and I believe this can be an overkill.

Final Cut Pro X

If I'm working with a video editor on a mac, I would definitely recommend FCPX. This software (like most professional softwares) has a TON of bells and whistles, so I would only recommend this for advanced video users or ones that want to become proficient in video editing. There are more basic video editors out there that could be recommended for those just needing basic editing tools.

Pros

  • Premiere Pro is extremely popular, being included in the Creative Cloud Suite. Because of widespread use, it's updated frequently and has plenty of troubleshooting forums and online discussions to search for issues and understanding the software. Frequent updates can also have cons, but for the most part, new features become welcome changes and bugs are fixed relatively quickly.
  • Premiere Pro is fairly easy to learn and makes for an excellent professional editing software or a great learning tool for new editors. The interface is simple to navigate and one can organize windows to their own preferences. Video editing becomes somewhat intuitive after repeated use of the software, simply due to how familiar Premiere Pro feels as one spends more time with it.
  • Premiere Pro offers many options for accomplishing your editing goals. Different editors prefer to cut sequences together using varying methods. Some might use the trim clip editor, while others would rather use the razor blade to cut clips. Some editors might use (.) to insert clips into a timeline, while others might use in and out points. The plethora of options at your fingertips makes Premiere Pro approachable and leaves lots of room for editors to define their own personal workflow.

  • The render speed of Final Cut Pro X is incredible. Everything is rendered while you're working, so the exporting of a file does not take long.
  • The interface has a similar feel to iMovie, which is what I upgraded from, so it was easy to adjust to this new program. The learning curve of software can be a real barrier to entry to newcomers.
  • The color correction system is fantastic. With a recent update, Final Cut Pro X now allows full-blown color correction to your projects. It is much easier to get the same look across all clips than it used to be.

Cons

  • Sometimes if I'm cutting a small frame, it's difficult to grab the frame.
  • If I am working off my desktop, and I move a file, Premiere wants to use that file as a reference. So you have to move all corresponding files together.
  • If I pause a video playback, my play button gets removed. I need to move the timeline indicator to get it back.

  • It lags when a project is very extensive (20 min or more of 4K).
  • Layout is still outdated, it would work well with a new layout that could give a better comprehension of the features.
  • The timeline can be a little uncomfortable if it has different sources (several video and audio entries).

Final Cut Pro is a great software package for editing, and obviously, good things require training to understand and comprehend what your are editing. I do not give a 10/10 because it would be easier to have a comprehensive manual inside the software, rather that researching or getting yourself trained.

Customer service is very knowledgeable about what your problem is and they take your time to resolve any issue that you might have. I had an opportunity to call to resolve a problem, and the interaction with the rep was very nice and interesting, definitely went above and beyond

Implementing Final Cut Pro into the organization was a smooth transition from what we didn't had. We felt we went from zero to hero with this software, due to all the great features that we learned. We took some time in training staff on how to use the software but at the end, this was very useful and important.

Alternatives Considered

I feel the most comfortable using Adobe Premiere Pro because of how frequent I use it. I do think that all Adobe programs are easy to use and widely used by the general public which makes it easy if you have questions.

I find that Final Cut Pro has a better way of understanding its feature. It is more user friendly when it comes to insert transitions or any other effect. Also, the price makes a difference compared to the others. The way you edit in Final Cut Pro is different than how you edit on other software, meaning that its easier.

Return on Investment

  • It allows us to learn and train on a single software that runs virtually identically on Mac and PC, reducing our training and staff overhead while supporting a wide user base
  • The cost can be hard to justify for a whole lab of computers that aren't being used through the full working day
Paul Weber profile photo
  • Has saved us on professional editing which turns out to be expensive.
  • Further training is needed so it can take time to have the correct personnel managing this software.
  • The features that come along with the software has helped us avoid purchasing equipment to solve issues that can be fixed in the software.
