Adobe Premiere Pro

Anyone hoping to move up from the ranks of "home movie" editor should probably bite the bullet to use Premiere Pro. I'm too unfamiliar with other comparable software (Sony Vegas?), and can basically never make the recommendation to use anything else, especially when a Creative Cloud membership nets you the slew of Adobe products. It's practically essential to have access to all of these programs. If you are just editing a few fast videos for friends or never intend on making money with video editing, Premiere Pro is probably a luxury and not worth the money.

Final Cut Pro X

If you want a straight forward video editing software with the ability to really fine-tune your audio and video, Final Cut Pro X is the option for you. If you're not the type to constantly save your work and keep back-ups of those saves, you might want to be wary of this.

Pros

  • Adobe Premiere Pro has a great use interface that makes it easier to find the tools needed. It increases the ability to get work done.
  • Adobe Premiere Pro makes it very easy to integrate other Adobe files into Premiere. This avoids time and file issues when the file types are not compatible with the platform.
  • By allowing you to detach audio from video really makes it easy to add new soundtracks and audio to files.
  • Adobe Premiere allows you to export in a wide variety of file types for different social platforms for sharing. This helps to increase exposure.
  • Premiere handles large volumes of videos very well. Using over 20 different video clips I was able to create a 5 minute video for our school to present to parents and students to advertise the school and all of the unique programs the school offers.

  • I feel like using FCPX on a Mac is a positive thing because the software was created specifically for the Mac and can use resources more efficiently.
  • Just like with most softwares, when you learn the workflow of the software allows you to organize and be more productive.
  • The video editing tools are pretty easy to get used to and allow for quicker editing sessions, especially when you start using the keyboard shortcuts.

Cons

  • Premiere tends to be buggy, particularly when new releases roll out. It can be very frustrating to get far along in a project only to encounter a bug that prevents you from using a tool or file format you need to. Rolling back to previous versions is possible but gets messy.
  • Subscription to the Creative Cloud: I don't mind this in a professional setting, but it can get very pricey for a casual user
  • Can be pretty resource heavy, however, that's the nature of most any NLE that is powerful

  • Since the beginning, FCPX has had some major upgrades trying to get it back to where Final Cut Pro 7 ended at. It's finally getting there and adding other tools that are nice, but because it started from the ground up with a whole new redesign, it's taken a while and some other video editors had to use other softwares when FCPX wasn't able to handle their needs.
  • With any advanced software, the learning curve can be pretty steep, so reading up on the manual or finding good tutorials have been a lifesaver.

Final Cut Pro is a great software package for editing, and obviously, good things require training to understand and comprehend what your are editing. I do not give a 10/10 because it would be easier to have a comprehensive manual inside the software, rather that researching or getting yourself trained.

Customer service is very knowledgeable about what your problem is and they take your time to resolve any issue that you might have. I had an opportunity to call to resolve a problem, and the interaction with the rep was very nice and interesting, definitely went above and beyond

Implementing Final Cut Pro into the organization was a smooth transition from what we didn't had. We felt we went from zero to hero with this software, due to all the great features that we learned. We took some time in training staff on how to use the software but at the end, this was very useful and important.

Alternatives Considered

Camtasia is much better for desktop/lecture capture -- it doesn't really have the horsepower to do handle large video clips and the .camproj file format (which is basically xml) doesn't integrate well with any other programs. There are also inconsistent features between the MAC and PC version. Flash was a great program but it seems to have almost completely died out and is not supported on mobile devices or modern browsers such as Chrome. It's no longer viable.Final Cut is a great program but it's not part of the Adobe Creative Cloud. I used it for years prior to Adobe releasing the subscription model, after which it made little financial sense to continue buying Final Cut, which is still a good program though. Some people just prefer the interface over Adobe. They have nearly identical features.

I find that Final Cut Pro has a better way of understanding its feature. It is more user friendly when it comes to insert transitions or any other effect. Also, the price makes a difference compared to the others. The way you edit in Final Cut Pro is different than how you edit on other software, meaning that its easier.
