Adobe Premiere Pro

Well, Adobe Premiere Pro is all about video editing. I've dabbled with Avid (5+ years ago) and some less-intensive programs. Premiere Pro seems to be able to handle any and all projects. My uses have been fairly low-key: editing sketches together for entertainment and company luncheon; editing clips of employees receiving awards, etc. It's become part of my job, but not necessarily an essential part, and Premiere Pro has performed admirably. In my limited experience, it does allow certain things that the less-intensive programs do not (such as assimilating video from different eras, devices, qualities, etc.).

It's very useful for projects that require step-by-step tasks to be done and a lot of collaboration. It's particularly well-suited for creative teams because the commenting on images/PDFs is pretty helpful. I love the Document Editor - you can make changes in a word document without having to manually download the file, open it, make changes, save, then re-upload. Just click a button, it opens, make your changes, close it, and it is saved & uploaded as a new version automatically.
I think it's less suitable for people who don't necessarily have a lot of deadlines for individual tasks - if a large part of your job is waiting on external people to get back to you or create something, it might not be the right system.

Pros

  • Our company has a long, rich history which includes a lot of archival videos from a dozen or more years ago. With Premiere, I have been able to easily lift relevant segments from these older videos to be used in newer videos. I don't know how I would have achieved this without Premiere Pro.
  • I am not a seasoned expert in the realm of video editing. While Premiere can be a bit overwhelming to a newbie at first, it does seem to offer every option and setting I could imagine. With a little research, I was able to figure out exactly what I needed, all of which was easily navigable through Premiere Pro.
  • I consider Premiere to be my ultimate translator. I was able to take video clips shot on various devices, using disparate settings, and assimilate them into a seamless final product. I don't know much about codecs and frame rates, but with Premiere, it turns out I didn't need to know much for my purposes.

  • Customized dashboards - I like being able to organize tasks the way I want. So for example, I have a widget for things to do today/tomorrow, plus one for overdue tasks to bring them to my attention quickly, and backlogged projects. What's great about it is that I can make my dashboard just the way I want it, which is bound to be different from what works best for a coworker.
  • Notifications are useful - I mostly just use it to tag other people when they need to be updated, but other team members also use automated notifications to tell them when steps that need to be done by other people, before they can start their task, finally get done. For example, designers don't have to constantly check in to see if a copy has been written and approved yet - the system will notify them when it's ready for them.
  • Very user-friendly interface. I know it's not the most important thing, but it really does help when the software you use just works and looks nice and modern.
  • The calendar view is a really nice addition and helps me plan ahead for busy times.

Cons

  • I imagine that a lot of work has gone into the UI for this program, but I still have to wonder whether or not it could be any more beginner-friendly. It takes me a few minutes to get my bearings when I start a new project. The UI isn't terrible, but I guess that's why this is the "Pro" version.
  • The workflow took me a while to get used to. Is it confusing? For me, it was. It seems like there is one panel too many. I imagine there is some science behind it, but to me, it's a bit crowded visually noisy. Perhaps it makes perfect sense to those who use this program to directly earn a living.

  • The iOS apps need more functionalities of the web version.
  • It should be possible to start the enterprise plan with less than 25 users.
  • A desktop app for OS X/Windows would be great so that working offline would be possible (it's sad but a reality that there are still areas where there is neither wifi nor LTE and this is really a pain if you travel a lot but want to work).

Wrike is a free resource for us currently, we moved off the subscription as the team had some adjustments. If we were to go back to a paid model or require more time reporting I'd have to look at alternatives such as Podio. I am the sole manager of Wrike currently internally, and would like to get more people on board to justify the cost

Their support was done mainly through email and depending on their work lord, could take longer to get a response. But the response was still within a reasonable time frame and courteous every time.

Wrike does a great job of provide a breadth of videos for learning their program. This includes a 'getting started' sett of videos along with a collection of more in depth videos to assist more experienced users. Combined with their excellent chat support learning wrike is easy and it includes easy access to best practices.

Alternatives Considered

I like it because it's simple and intuitive. Sometimes a user interface or update can be scary, but Premiere is simple.

My team started using Basecamp initially, but due to the focus on simplicity, found that our needs greatly exceeded what Basecamp could offer. Wrike was a great alternative due to continued simplicity to use, intuitive to manage projects, but a level of robustness that provided me the tools necessary to manage an ever growing team.

  • The cost was more than the worth our department put into it.
  • Spent $5,000 a year on the product, but it was poorly utilized.
