Dynamic Tag Management

If you're on the Adobe stack at all, you absolutely need DTM. It will make your life infinitely easier. It's so simple to update your Adobe Analytics code and have version control, and when we implemented Adobe Target, it took literally less than 15 minutes for me to do. I also think it's significantly simpler than Google Tag Manager. I went through all manner of difficulty when implementing tags on that and have not had similar problems on DTM. If you're frequently placing pixels, it's a great tool that will speed their deployment. The only situation in which I think a tag manager is not appropriate is if you have a dev with too much time on their hands. Otherwise, get a TMS and get DTM.

The scenarios where a tag management solution is appropriate are:
  • Your marketing team needs to move faster on actionable data than your IT team can deploy tags.
  • You want to give your marketing team the power and responsibility of managing and deploying analytics tags.
  • Vendor tags are interfering with site performance or uptime and you wish to have an easy "off" switch.
One key question to ask is: "Do I need assistance with the technical implementation of the data layer?". And if you do, "how much assistance?". Another question is "does our marketing team need direction on a data layer or tagging strategy?" Tealium excels at these areas because of their excellent support before, during, and after implementation.

Pros

  • Rules: There are a wide variety of native triggers that are included for both plain vanilla HTML and single page applications that allow for many specific combinations of triggers.
  • QA: The plugin that allows for QA within the console makes it easy to tell if a rule is firing or not without the creation of a separate environment.
  • Version Control: It is mercifully simple to roll back to an earlier version if something goes awry. Remember, no matter how good your QA, something will eventually slip through. It's much better to be able to roll back with a couple clicks.

  • Technology: Tealium continues to improve the iQ solution rapidly based upon the feedback of existing and new customers. Tealium seeks the customer feedback to push the solution forward in new and exiting ways that delivers value and flexibility to customers.
  • Customer Service: Tealium has been able to maintain a high level of customer service despite the rapid growth of the company. This is a testament to the organization of the company and their ability to attract the right talent to manage that growth.
  • Customers: Tealium is managing more tags than its competitors combined and the strength of the customer community creates a rising tide of ideas which helps Tealium move the solution forward while inspiring new ways for customers to leverage the toolset.

Cons

  • The initial training can be challenging, especially for people without a strong coding background, but it isn't impossible.
  • The publishing process is relatively intuitive, but could be improved upon.
  • As it is a newer program for Adobe, support is limited.
Jay Corcoran profile photo
  • Tealium iQ can be an intimidating solution to understand and use. So, it is highly valuable to have walkthroughs and setup wizards that reduce that barrier of entry to the solution.
  • Communicating out the latest changes and ways to leverage them is a constant challenge for Tealium given the rapid release of features. Making sure this messaging is clear by leveraging a mobile Tealium Customer Application like that used for Digital Velocity to communicate out the latest and greatest changes may be an opportunity.

Implementation had some bumps in the road and it was new for all of us, but for the most part, it was easier than many other implementations we've done with other technologies.

Alternatives Considered

Since we are using it almost exclusively with the implementation of Adobe Media Optimizer, we have not considered using a different tag management software.

Teallium is more robust than the others and also easier to use. The others require a more technical user.

Return on Investment

  • It has sped up the coding time of individual website 10 fold.
  • The rate of failure of tracking pixels to fire has dropped dramatically.
  • It has significantly sped up the progress of getting individual clients implemented into AMO.

  • Brought IT and Marketing together
