Dynamic Tag Management

If you're on the Adobe stack at all, you absolutely need DTM. It will make your life infinitely easier. It's so simple to update your Adobe Analytics code and have version control, and when we implemented Adobe Target, it took literally less than 15 minutes for me to do. I also think it's significantly simpler than Google Tag Manager. I went through all manner of difficulty when implementing tags on that and have not had similar problems on DTM. If you're frequently placing pixels, it's a great tool that will speed their deployment. The only situation in which I think a tag manager is not appropriate is if you have a dev with too much time on their hands. Otherwise, get a TMS and get DTM.

Pros

Dynamic Tag Management

  • It is a rules based tag management system that allows the application of tracking pixels much easier than hard coding.
  • By placing 2 pieces of code on the top and bottom of each page of a website, we can create rules that track certain events and relay the information back to Adobe Media Optimizer and Google analytics.
  • It has simplified the coding process so one doesn't have to generate tons of gory javascript to deploy on each individual page to get tracking.

Yoast Wordpress SEO Plugins

  • Helps improve posts. What we love most is that is instantly analyzes each post and gives us feedback up to the second. We know what needs to be corrected before we even publish the post or page.
  • Suggests keywords to add to pages. Keywords are the most important part if you are trying to rank on Google. This is what people search for to find specific sites. If you have properly implemented your keyword within your content, you rank higher. Yoast points out when you are not using it enough and suggests that you add it if the page is lacking.
  • Helps keep meta tags updated. This is something we didn't know was so important until using Yoast. The plugin does a great job of helping us keep our meta tags correct on each page to accurately tell the search engines what content is on that page.

Cons

Dynamic Tag Management

  • Because Adobe Analytics requires adding DTM tags to the site, it does require some basic web development skills to ensure it does not impact pageload speed. When working across a large organization with many developers, it is equally important the developers do remove the code, lacking the understanding of what it is.
  • The utilization of eVars, Sprops, and events to tag a website, creates a learning curve for technical teams. There is a gap in knowledge of UX | UI design and the strategy of what should be measured and treated as a click event vs. pageload.
  • The Adobe consultants provide very little "real world" examples and they do not look at your web design and the user's functionality to recommend a DTM tagging strategy
  • All implementations should start first with a tagging strategy: 1) define what are the most important, critical actions or behaviors on the website 2) Write out the details within the Adobe provided spreadsheet for assigning eVars, Sprops and Events 3) Tag the site
  • When consulting within the business team, try to refrain from talking eVars, Sprops and events. It is simply too confusing and is much easier to ask what are the online behaviors or interactions that are most important across the site or on the page and then translate those into a DTM tagging strategy and prioritization.
  • Don't try to tag everything! Which often results in over engineering, too many technical resources spending too many hours tagging and testing. Quantity of data is not the same as quality.

Yoast Wordpress SEO Plugins

  • Yoast's plug-in is great for on-page but does not provide insights into your ongoing SEO strategy, and how different pages on your site interact with one another.
  • The readability score feels a bit crude. I understand that it provides a nationally recognized readability standard, but as a (dare I say) expert writer with an extensive background in many styles, I sometimes disregard this score. Maybe Google prefers the readability standard to my own, but as it sometimes shoots down sentences with more sophisticated structures, I believe that I know better. Maybe I'm a fool, but sometimes a writer's just gotta write.
  • Offering keyword research and data would be nice. There is very little input about the quality of keyword you are choosing. If you are confident that you know your keywords without input, then this won't be a problem.
  • To my knowledge, Yoast does not offer a competitive analysis or track your SERP performance for you. Tools for on-page only.

All the information is integrated on-screen while writing content and the scores and related score elements (i.e. paragraph/sentence length, transition words, keyphrase density, etc.) are all updated live as I write which I think is amazingly helpful.

Alternatives Considered

Dynamic Tag Management

Adobe DTM provides a more secure data analytics solution. It is customized and best used on large scale deployments of websites with pages 10,000+. The Adobe Analytics tool, once learned, is very easy to use and provides more robust, customized graphics and ability to export data to "securely" via FTP from the cloud to SQL database.

Yoast Wordpress SEO Plugins

Yoast is less robust than the standalone pay services that stand on their own outside of WordPress. Moz is a great research tool, especially for agencies like ours. It gives us access to insights for several clients with ease. That said, it is expensive, and once you get the hang of keyword research, you can probably find a fair amount of answers on your own without it. WordStream is not exactly an SEO tool, as it is built around PPC ads, but it does provide keyword research, and offer plenty of info that can be gleaned for SEO purposes. These tools are deep and very powerful, but, for the cost, they are arguably not as valuable as Yoast, which specifically shines for its WordPress integration and on-page prowess.

Return on Investment

Dynamic Tag Management

  • Excellent ROI investment "if" strategy and roll out are prioritized appropriately. Because this is a custom solution, Adobe does not provide this level of guidance.
  • From a project management timeline perspective, if the team rolling this out tries to tag everything, then they will quickly run out of time and overextend resource hours.

Yoast Wordpress SEO Plugins

  • We predominantly use WordPress for our custom websites, so Yoast is essentially "free" for us to use for all of our clients.
  • There are a few great SEO tools out there, but they generally come at great cost. We have used and gone away from a few such tools. Because of Yoast's integration with WordPress, and cost-effectiveness, it has become our most indispensable SEO tool.
  • Yoast saves us a bit of SEO research time because it prominently displays all of the items we need to pay attention to, strictly for the purposes of on-page SEO.
