Adobe Target

I feel you need to have a dedicated developer who works solely in Test & Target. If you have that resource, and ensure to train the resource sufficiently, it will make it much easier to be able to run tests and have a clean testing program.

Kentico

Well suited for marketers that do not have in-house web programming or web designing resources available. Less appropriate for people that aren't computer savvy (i.e. don't know how to use basic programs like email, Excel, PowerPoint) or for those who are not detail-oriented because if you skip certain steps when adding/editing content, your webpage won't render correctly and/or create negative impact for search engine optimization without you knowing it.

Pros

  • The test report page is very intuitive. It is very easy to analyze a test based on different segments such as new and returning users.
  • Having confidence levels inserted into the reporting tool is a key feature. While it is a simple feature, it allows users to easily understand when results are significant.
  • We have recently created swim lanes for traffic and this has been very helpful to make sure that different tests are not crossing over in terms of traffic.

  • Page Templates. I've never used any other CMS with the ease of use in creating and reusing the same template across multiple pages.
  • User management and security. This is very straightforward and simple when all you want is basic security for your content managers, but it's also granular if you need it to be. Allowing access or denying access to virtually any control or object in the site, or on the administrator side without the need of custom code
  • Keeping Custom code to a minimal level when using the portal engine. The Webparts that are built in cover 80% of all business needs, and customizing the rest is a breeze since it is built around .net.
  • The learning curve is much faster than with other systems such as Ektron, or SiteCore.
  • Custom modules are really cool if you want to package custom code to reuse on different sites and for the community
  • Global event handlers to hook into any change that is made on any document or object in the system. You can literally add any code you want and attach it to any event you want.
  • Automated Marketing in this system is rivaled by no other CMS
  • A/B variant tests are excellent for determining traffic on the site.

Cons

  • Be careful to not rack up too many server calls - this can be a costly endeavor. If you're in a large corporation which can afford mass quantities of server calls per year, then you won't have to be as concerned. If you are a small company, you must be more prudent and use T&T for specific campaigns which have a life span, can warrant specific results, and do not linger on. De-activating mboxes within T&T is a great way to disable mboxes without bugging IT or your web developers about removing/adding mboxes every time you want to run a campaign.
  • T&T is client-side user experience testing, meaning what the customer sees is based on their specific visit in a specific web browser - and the experience is controlled by T&T during the lifespan of the cookie. This is not a fault of T&T, but it is necessary to understand. As you build and QA campaigns, you still have to check the experience in ALL browsers and you have to be aware that a user visiting your site on more than one computer may see different experiences based on how they were routed in the test campaign.

  • The biggest drawback to Kentico is that it is a relatively unknown product and as such you have to fully educate most customers on the solution when trying to sell it.
  • The ecommerce functionality is definitely lacking. However, they have been making great strides and have indicated that this is a primary focus for them.
  • Non-technical users will need training to become familiar with the interface. Nothing advanced or formal, but it does require some handholding at first.

It seriously is one of the best interfaces I have ever used. I also love the fact that I can use UI personalization to secure any functionality by user or role that I don't want that role to have access to. The best part is the customization of the UI, I can add in any button, tab, or menu item I want through it, no code required.

They truly are amazing with how fast they get back to us on issues. Almost all of the time the support team is able to answer our issues with direct and to the point information.

In-Person Training

Adobe Target8.1
Based on 3 answers
The instructor that came to train us was awesome and this training was very useful. I would recommend it for anyone who is going to be using this software. I only mark it lower because it is an added expense to an already expensive product, and a lot of the training covered the "Target" portion of the software (which again, we didn't use)

Online Training

Adobe Target6.1
Based on 3 answers
The training was very easy to understand, however it would have been more useful to my development team than me. It was also primarily over-the-phone, which is never as easy to follow as in-person. We ended up scheduling and paying for an in-person training session to supplement the online/phone training because it wasn't helpful enough.

Alternatives Considered

I have used Google Analytics on my personal website but I can't compare it with Test and Target, because Google Analytics is free which will do less than what Adobe Test and Target does.
Abdulrahman Jasim profile photo
Ultimately Kentico is easier to work with both as a developer and an end user. The solution is well built and supported. Both Ektron and Sitecore have their places, but Kentico's price, performance, and flexibility make it a better fit for most of our clients

Return on Investment

  • We saw some nice lifts in conversion from the tests we ran within the product.
  • We were able to easily show other team members when suggestions would work or not work, with numbers backing it up.

  • The Kentico implementation has allowed for much greater efficiency of maintaining the website and less time and money spent than our previous solution.
