Adobe Target

I feel you need to have a dedicated developer who works solely in Test & Target. If you have that resource, and ensure to train the resource sufficiently, it will make it much easier to be able to run tests and have a clean testing program.

Kentico

Kentico 8 scales extremely well from project budgets targeted under 50,000 to projects well over 1 million dollars. I've successfully applied the system to both internal business applications as well as high-volume B2C applications. I would avoid using Kentico 8 in situations where the client has extremely specific administration needs

Pros

Adobe Target

  • Makes it very easy to modify your webpages dynamically for short-term campaigns and testing.
  • Allows you to display certain content to certain audiences or types of users.
  • Provides integration with Adobe Analytics for reporting purposes (also has AEM integrations we haven't explored yet).
  • The interface is pretty easy to use.

  • Page Templates. I've never used any other CMS with the ease of use in creating and reusing the same template across multiple pages.
  • User management and security. This is very straightforward and simple when all you want is basic security for your content managers, but it's also granular if you need it to be. Allowing access or denying access to virtually any control or object in the site, or on the administrator side without the need of custom code
  • Keeping Custom code to a minimal level when using the portal engine. The Webparts that are built in cover 80% of all business needs, and customizing the rest is a breeze since it is built around .net.
  • The learning curve is much faster than with other systems such as Ektron, or SiteCore.
  • Custom modules are really cool if you want to package custom code to reuse on different sites and for the community
  • Global event handlers to hook into any change that is made on any document or object in the system. You can literally add any code you want and attach it to any event you want.
  • Automated Marketing in this system is rivaled by no other CMS
  • A/B variant tests are excellent for determining traffic on the site.

Cons

Adobe Target

  • Adobe Test & Target is a premium product and with that it comes at a very premium price. Usually smaller businesses/individuals cannot afford to pay for such a tool because it ranges high in pricing per month. If the product is used optimally then it can pay for itself.

  • I would like to see more balance in their support. Sometimes their US support does not provide nearly the level of support their Czech team does. Sometimes I wait until I know that the Euro team is awake before posting an issue or question with the hope that they jump in.
  • More clearer documentation and more examples of using their API. It is such a good API but it could use more tactical examples and help. Sometimes they don't provide enough details and figure that you know about the API's before hand. They are so rich, its hard to know them all much less proper usage.
  • Their new website for Kentico 8 shows a great and fresh way of using Kentico 8 for creating a website, it would be great if they provided a step by step demo of how they did it so the users of Kentico can see how to navigate it.
  • Rebuild their WebParts and Widgets to use HTML5 instead of tables in many cases. And more documentation on how to style them instead of having to guess via Firebug or browser development tools on how to style the web parts.

Likelihood to Renew

Not applicable as we don't subscribe to Adobe Target, rather we support clients on their use of the tool. However, we do see a high renewal rate among clients.

We are locked into Kentico for the long haul. It provides us with an easy and flexible solution for a very non technical company to create a site and have the features they want, especially with the inclusion of EMS into our license. Now we have a true platform to build and grow our solutions.

Their support staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and will work with you until your issue is fixed. This could take a few phone calls back and forth, but they are very diligent in helping you.

In-Person Training

Adobe Target

Adobe Target 8.1
Based on 3 answers
The instructor that came to train us was awesome and this training was very useful. I would recommend it for anyone who is going to be using this software. I only mark it lower because it is an added expense to an already expensive product, and a lot of the training covered the "Target" portion of the software (which again, we didn't use)

Online Training

Adobe Target

Adobe Target 6.1
Based on 3 answers
The training was very easy to understand, however it would have been more useful to my development team than me. It was also primarily over-the-phone, which is never as easy to follow as in-person. We ended up scheduling and paying for an in-person training session to supplement the online/phone training because it wasn't helpful enough.

Alternatives Considered

Adobe Target

Target has far superior functionality, it integrates with Adobe Analytics and is easy to build tests.

Kentico

Ultimately Kentico is easier to work with both as a developer and an end user. The solution is well built and supported. Both Ektron and Sitecore have their places, but Kentico's price, performance, and flexibility make it a better fit for most of our clients

Return on Investment

Adobe Target

  • We saw some nice lifts in conversion from the tests we ran within the product.
  • We were able to easily show other team members when suggestions would work or not work, with numbers backing it up.

Kentico

  • Development and support efficiency (shorter timelines and less resources required)
  • Customer satisfaction and service (very high retention rate for customers that use the solution)
  • Improving our overall offerings in the space
